The Japanese islands are all in a high-risk earthquake zone. They have minimal indigenous natural resources required for electricity generation. So, they rely on nuclear power to generate a lot of their electricity.

They built it next to the ocean for its water.

The original thread title was something like "Japan nuclear reactor goes Chernobyl." There was never any substantive information here.

They need the cold water from the ocean to cool the reactor.
