The other nice thing is all I have to upgrade is the motherboard and I can get some SLI to fit under the Power supply. Not bad.

Very powerful rig for the price.

Knowing you have a 780? No thanks. You win.

My build could have been even cheaper if I was not doing emulators. (That is what the 2TB Green drive is for) Also if I stuck with the supplied thermal compound (Apparently, that can cost you 3 degrees of cooling under load.) and a cheaper motherboard. (I wanted headroom for overclocking, plus this is my 3rd build with Asrock and I love them.)

Hell, I might of been able to get it under $800 if done right. lol

Are you going to delid the CPU? If not, look into it, THAT is where your big gains are going to be with thermal compound.

I also love my Asrock board and any others I have used in builds over the years.

TBH I am a little jealous of these 'budget' builds, because they come so close to matching my big budget machine in many ways. I did also build my machine at the very release of the x79 chipset and 3930k, so I payed the price.

Still, kudos, you built a machine along the lines of 2.5-3x as powerful as an xbox one for a little more than 1.5x the price. (had to get my console dig in there)

Delid sounds so scary. If I ever have temperature or noise issues, I will probably do it.

I am also hoping quieter. As of right now, my rig is slightly louder watching a movie (idle) than my previous HTPC, but that is to be expected. If I can find my decibel meter, I will post the results.

Have you delided? Yeah its not right but.

If so did you use a the Knife method or the Vise?

One of my 3770k might got back under water so I'm thinking of deliding at the same time.

I have a 3930k, which is sandy bridge-E, which requires no delidding, only Haswell chips need to be delidded.

You would think that Intel would catch on and change the manufacturing process to include the right thermal paste from the start, after seeing the enthusiast community playing lab technician with retail processors.

I have seen both methods, and if I was going to do it, I think I would feel more comfortable with the vice method, but its all speculation from my end.

Alright, I am ready to get a card.

An Asus GTX 660 is now $179 at Newegg, with a $20 gift card.

The Asus GTX 760 is $239 at Microcenter.

We are looking at an 80 dollar difference in price for a 20% increase in performance. It is going in an Inspiron, so overclocking is probably not going to happen.

Is the extra cash worth it? I have an I5 3000 series processor with 16 gb of ram. I will probably play games like Dayz a lot in the future.

Oh, and any budget power supply suggestions are welcome.

hometeam 01-10-2014 06:48 PM

definitely get the 760. ****, spend the extra and get the 770 on gk110 instead of gk104 :(

Also, if you dont mind shopping used check out www.reddit.com/r/hardwareswap . 670s are bringing about 200, and i bet you can get a 770 (gk110!) for that 240 price.

I have circled back to a 7750 over and over.

$80 for a 1600 Benchmark score. Not too bad.

I wouldn't need to upgrade the power supply, either.

With business being soooo busy, I don't have time to play much, so I don't know if I want to go "All-In" right now. A 7750 would be a very cheap hold-over until next winter.

Besides, I don't know if a 660 Inspiron has enough airflow for the beast cards. It has been the perfect business/school computer so far, with a little "Left 4 Dead", "Wolfenstein", and "HL2" mixed in.

what benchmark?

Hopefully they are accurate.

hometeam 01-12-2014 12:33 PM

Ahh passmark. They are accurate when comparing to other passmark scores, and should give a good idea of general performance.

Just for shits and giggles I downloaded it and did mine. I scored 8385 for d3d :(

Sigh.

I got the Dell in December for $409. I simply couldn't resist the deal for an I5 3rd gen, 16gb ram, etc.

Now I am realizing the bottlenecks that the Inspiron has. Power supply, air flow, etc.
