Yep. You dont necessarily care if you are the best team, because 1) halfway through the year, we can pretty much eliminate everyone but 3 or 4 teams from being "the best", and 2) they dont hand out banners to the team that shows itself to be the best by objective measurement and popular opinion.
Part of the fun is to overcome all odds and be crowned champion in spite of not being the best. To be the David that toppled the Goliath. The Giants sure as hell were NOT the best team in the NFL last year by a long-shot, but I bet their fans dont care, because they beat the best on the "any given sunday" and have the trophy.
