I went to the US Open there back in '70s I was to young to see much with the highlight being my Uncle Earl (Who just passed away a couple weeks ago RIP.) said "Look at the girl! Look's like she swallowed two bowling balls!"

We played Cog Hill #4 Dubsdread. I was 12 years old maybe and shot a 105. Of course I was used to playing Horton Smith GC so it was a little different then what I was used to.

It was in good shape, but my experience with most TPC courses is they get alot of play for being TPCs. Sawgrass was probably the best one I've played, but I think Southwind in Memphis is the toughest.

I've never played any in arizona, have heard good th8nk about Troon though

I didn't think Southwind was that difficult. It has its holes,#12 is touchy, but I drove about 2 hrs south of there in Alabama and played Turtle Point. That course if tough as nails and for March was in great shape.

Played from the tips, at about 7400 yards and a par 71, it was pretty difficult.

Playing here this weekend. It's an upscale public course with costs of $120 max at prime time Sat-Sun mornings.

Stonewall at Lake Manassas. Directly next door is the Robert Trent Jones private course where they play the Tiger Woods Quicken Loans event.

Holes 3-6 along the lake.

I think the toughest course I've played overall, was either Pinehurst or pacific dunes.

I'm getting to play Oakmont next summer on a golf trip, I'm guessing it's gonna be up therr

True I've only played two TPC courses. That one and Deere Run and it's the harder of the two. I have come to notice that almost all tpc course end with the same design. A par 4 dog leg left with water on the left.

I'm not a huge fan of the TPC courses. They get so much play they're always a bit run down.

Sawgrass was nice though

Yea I've never played sawgrass before. Have a buddy who is a member there but I've never played it. Pinehurst will be awesome I bet

Pinehurst was just ridiculously difficult. You'd hit good shots and miss greens.

There's a course in Fayetteville called the blessings that's super tough too.

It's crazy hard

Me too.

Played TPC at Summerlin near Las Vegas around 2000 and TPC Phoenix Open twice in 1999 and 2001

I liked both.

I'm going to the ryder cup this year so I'm hoping to play some course up there. It's just outside of Minneapolis. Any suggestions?

O.city 07-01-2016 08:45 AM

So I've got my club championship next weekend and a four ball 2 day tourney the weekend after.

To pat myself on the back a little, I've gotten my index back down to scratch this year. I've worked my ass off to so it, now I've gotta get shit together for the club champ. 2 days of stroke play, then match played out. Last year I lost in the semis to the eventual champ 2 and 1. I've gotta try and get the 1 seed to avoid him and the other betier player til the finals. Luckily, the dude that plays to a plus 4 at our club isn't gonna play this year due to other comments but we added a few other good players as new member this year, so we'll see.

Try GD's Best in State. Hazeltine is only third (which isn't surprising, because I've heard pros say it's the worst course that is in a regular major rotation)

Played in South Carolina two weekends ago. Hot as ****, but had a great time. ****ing airline (United) broke my Driver, 5-Wood and 6-iron. All Ping G-25's. Mother****ers took ZERO responsibility. My ass was roasted talking to these dumbshits, but they just kept saying that they don't cover sports equip. I have been travelling over 25 years with Golf Clubs and never had an issue. Anyone have similar experiences, or better yet, have success filing a claim with the airline?

Continental temporarily lost mine and my BIL's clubs when I went to Scotland in 2011. Caused us to miss our tee time at Prestwick, which still chaps my ass to no end. I stayed on their ass long enough to get two $150 vouchers, but we also had major mechanical difficulties on the return flight.

In the future, travel with a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe longer than your driver in your bag. Usually what happens is that the jackasses jam the clubs in too tight of a space and all the pressure is transferred to the head of the tallest club, which results in your shaft snapping.

Also, call PING, give them your serial #s and explain the situation. If you get the right rep, they will cover you.

O.city 07-01-2016 10:30 AM

I always fed ex my clubs ahead of time to the first course we play, in a hard travel bag.

I get the PVC deal for the driver, but I question HTF that broke my 6 iron. That's a lot of want to to break that stick. I got a $100 voucher, but I lost $400 in clubs. Just frosts me. I'm thinking about going to a hard case for future travel.

I hadn't thought about talking to PING - thanks for the suggestion

I've done Ship Sticks before, but the cost was outrageous to ship them to SC. Like $140? In retrospect, it would have been cheaper than replacing the clubs...

Did they severely injure the clubheads or did they just break the shafts?

If they were PING's factory specs, I could legitimately reshaft all of those clubs for you in a half hour and ship them back to you for less than $100.

Thanks, but they not only broke the shafts but dented the heads on the driver and 5 wood. The 6 iron head has a gouge right across the face. Like I said, somebody put a shit ton of "want to" in ****ing these clubs up.

Played Erin Hills Tuesday. Tough track, you literally have fairway, then a yard or two of rough, then waist high fescue. I can't wait to see how the USGA sets it up.

If anyone is interested in hearing some USGA gossip, let me know - had dinner Tuesday night 10 feet from Mike Davis. Pretty much eavesdropped his entire conversation.

(the last pic is#18 from the tips. 675 yards)

There was only a forecaddie on 3-4 holes.

Luckily, there was one on the one hole I found the deep fescue. Damn near hit the kid sitting in his chair.

Rolled an 89 from the whites; six holes par or better. Was also starved and hung over as **** from some friendly bar patrons and tenders giving me free drinks the 12 hours prior. Literally woke up Saturday morning feeling like John Daly

I just spent an hour hitting bunker shots to come to one conclusion: I suck at hitting bunker shots.

I went to Top Golf last night. I really have never golfed in my life outside of hitting some ball across the river when I was in high school. Haven't swung a club since then. We found out my wife's boss' son was a golf pro there. He came over and gave my a free 1 hour lesson. Was able to start driving the ball 150-200 yards and fairly consistent straight near the end of the session.

I live in Phoenix and everyone here says I should be golfing at least occasionally as the valley is loaded with courses. Not really sure where I go from here if I wanted to attempt playing. Pay for a few more lessons? Just go out and play a short course? Start hitting the driving range every week, which I found out is located conveniently .5 miles from my house (link below)? Looks like a fairly cool place.

The best way to learn how to play is to learn from the green back.

Learn to putt, then chip, then pitch, hit half wedges, and then progress to full shots.

It will teach you the importance of the scoring shots while also showing you how all shots share common movements.

Most people do the exact opposite and start hacking away with a driver when they first begin, which does nothing but ingrain bad habits.

Ideally, you wouldn't even hit a full shot this year.

Almost every gold course has a Pro that can give you lessons. Take them, they'll save a lot of grief.

As for should you play? In the AZ? Oh hell yes!!! Low humidity means good golf! And get a push cart, it's the best way to golf IMO... And invest in a Garmin golf watch. Refurbished = cheap, and when you have a push cart and know how far you hit a ball (if you miss the fairway), you can walk straight online with where you hit it, and know when to start looking. My Garmin gold watch has paid for itself in found golf balls.

Take your smoker with you and dump it into one of the ponds. That way you can LOL every time you walk buy it.

Great advice. :clap::clap::clap::clap:

Amateurs add 85% of their shots from 100 yards in. You improve your short game and putting, then your score comes down quickly. The only other big waster of shots for amateurs is trying to hit a once-in-a-lifetime shot all the time from deep in the woods, over a lot of water to a small green, or sky a shot over a tree.

I need help. I keep going through drivers. I've had (3) drivers break where the shaft enters the club head. (2) were Taylormade's and (1) was a Cobra. I do not get mad and hit in on the ground (Learned not to due that, but folding an 8 iron over a tree limb). The 1st Taylormade made it about 6 rounds of golf, the 2nd busted on the second hit. The Cobra made it the last 1-1/2. Is it a possibility, that my swing is causing it? I do have a very fast swing speed of 110+ mph.

Pardon my ignorance on this topic but how can you get into a course and do that for free? Don't you have to buy a bucket of balls to even practice any of that?

Nope. Public courses allow players to practice their short game for free on and around the green. If it facilitates interest in the game it is more likely to lead to them buying buckets of balls and rounds on the course.

There is some etiquette involved, but most of it is common sense. Don't hit near where others are practicing, and don't monopolize several holes while putting if a lot of people are on the green. Don't hit longer pitch shots that will leave ball marks in the green if you can avoid it, because although you can fix it, it's still damage to the putting surface.

If you have a suitable surface for the activity, a drill you can do at home is chip into an opened and overturned umbrella.

I can attest to this theory...

That's exactly how I started, trying to rip it big and it messed up my swing from woods to wedges, eventually I realized I had to go smooth until I consistently hit it straight and with the right loft, and then I started punishing the ball 😃

I can hit 300 w my drive now pretty consistently, not bragging, just reinforcing what Hamas said, get a good motion, then ramp it up as you progress

The Cobra made it the last 1-1/2. Is it a possibility, that my swing is causing it? I do have a very fast swing speed of 110+ mph.

If you think your swing speed is the problem, maybe you need a stronger shaft(absolutely no pun intended)

When I went to Golfsmith, they told me my shaft needed to be custom for my driver, because I generate too much torque...

They were probably just trying to upsell me, but it's working for me

Most or atleast some courses will have a short game green tok thag you can hit shots into.

Thanks. I went to Golf Headquarters last night and told them what was going on. They really seemed to think it was an issue with my swing, but mainly striking the ball on the heel of the driver. Which has happened, but not often. I ended up buying a new King Cobra LTD last night, going to give it a try. Hopefully this one works out better.

Thanks for the answers.

Hamas, are you saying I just go onto the course somewhere and find a hole no one is using and practice there? Or is there a small green and chipping area near the range?

Up around the clubhouse therr will be a putting green, maybe a short game green around there somewhere that's free for anyone.

They're likely to have a range plan where you pay so much per year for unlimited balls.

Pain in the ass trying to divine what local membership rates are around here.

Except for Hillcrest, for obvious reasons.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-14-2016 10:59 AM

Don't look now, but if Mickelson birdies 18 he'll shoot 62.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-14-2016 11:22 AM

The golf gods just don't want anyone to shoot 62 LMAO

That putt missing with 6 inches to go is beyond explanation.

Went left the entire way, and somehow squeezes right.

It's one thing to lip out for 59 at Phoenix, it's another to lip out from 16 feet for the all time scoring record in a major.

Sick.

Also, most course have a practice green for chipping and putting. I stop by on my way home from work quite often just to practice chipping and putting.

Stenson has been a machine this week. He is going to be very, very tough to beat.

KC_Connection 07-17-2016 06:36 AM

Thinking Mickelson wins #6 today. The pressure may prove too much for Stenson.

That was a heck of a start on 1.

WilliamTheIrish 07-17-2016 09:18 AM

I don't think Phil could lose it with that par on 7, but Stenson just drilled that 15 footer for birdie and it looked like maybe Stenson made Phil blink first.

WilliamTheIrish 07-17-2016 09:45 AM

This is just so fun to watch...

Pablo 07-17-2016 09:46 AM

Really good golf on display. Glad I can watch it.

Miles 07-17-2016 10:49 AM

Hell of a put Stenson.

Stenson from way downtown.

Why Not? 07-17-2016 11:11 AM

And, that should do it. Wow. Stenson played unreal today.

KC_Connection 07-17-2016 11:13 AM

Well, you can't play much better under pressure than that. Ridiculous round (and tournament) from him.

tk13 07-17-2016 11:31 AM

What a fitting putt to end it. Almost fell backwards into the hole. A 63 on Sunday. What a performance.

Why Not? 07-17-2016 11:31 AM

Absolutely brilliant round of golf.

kstater 07-17-2016 11:33 AM

Phil shot -17 at the Open with a 65 on Sunday. If you'd predicted that on Monday, you would've guessed Phil would win, and by a large margin too. That's one of his best performances in a major, and he didn't win.

Demonpenz 07-17-2016 12:47 PM
