He was drafted to play tackle. We have a left tackle. There was no point to move him to LT and bump Light to RT.

Another point that may make you potentially wrong is that the Pats may (not ARE, but may) be looking at their draft board and seeing that there are a ton of nearly-equivalent defensive players that they can have available at the 28 pick, but if they don't take Solder now, their tackle situation is going to get ugly quick in terms of the drop-off at the position. I have no idea if that's true. I don't pretend to read BB's mind as thoroughly as you pretend to read the mind of EVERY GM in the entire NFL....

Which would be obviated by drafting Carimi or Castonzo, both of whom could play RT. Or with one of the two seconds that they have. There are plenty of RTs in this draft. It's not the hole that LT is, and comparing the two as though they are equal is one of the most ignorant things imaginable.
But hey, I'm sure that Jason Smith was drafted to play just "tackle" too. |
