With Aviles now hitting over .300, I'm wondering what you guys think about his future and specifically his future on our team. I'm a fan, personally.

I've always liked him and think he has the talent to be a solid, not too expensive piece of the puzzle.

A platoon with he and Getz at 2B next season until Giovatella is ready...then a decent utility guy off the bench.

Some good news. Tonight NW Arkansas won the AA Texas League championship with a 2-0 win. Will Smith (acquired for Callaspo) pitched 6.2 scoreless innings. Wasn't too much offense but Hosmer did have an RBI single for one of the two runs.

He has a limited future, at best. Fundamentally, he's atrocious at the plate, and he's mediocre, again at best, in the field.

Aviles is little more than a muted light on an otherwise bleak team.

Yuni is #6 in homers for all MLB shortstops this year.

FYI - former Royals pitching prospect Dan Cortes made his major league debut for Seattle today. He was said to have reached 98 MPH as he pitched one scoreless inning (0 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout) for the Mariners. Dayton traded Cortes to acquire Yuniesky Betancourt.

Glancing at his stats, looks like he had a bit of a rough year in 2010 (Cortes that is). 196 strikouts in @182 innings, which is great, but he allowed 180 hits and 114 walks. ERA over 5. I can't remember much about him now from when he was in the system except that he had a plus fastball. I think I read somewhere he asked to go into the bullpen earlier in the summer.

He'll probably make a bad-ass setup man. Closing potential? Maybe. I can say with some certainty that he wasn't going to make it to the bigs as a starter.

He'd been in trouble with the law a couple of times I believe, and was considered a bit of a headcase. Combined with his lack of control the year we traded him, I don't think it was a great loss. If he turns his life around (matures?) and can find the plate more often, good for him.

Royals with the 6th-worst record in MLB at the moment, but we're in position to catch everyone but the Pirates, especially with an upcoming 4-game set against TB.

Go Royals!
