Mickelson needs to bag that driving iron. He can't hit that thing for shit.

With his swing, he'd be much better off just smoothing a 5 wood out there.

If he could put the ball in the fairway the next 2 days, he may have the best chance to catch Rory... should Rory back up any. The way Rory is playing though, it seems unlikely he will back up very far... but you never know.

Johnson is playing like he just wants to get a seat at the 19th hole and start pounding Jagerbombs.

The thing that is going to make him hard to catch is the fact that he's just so perfectly balanced. He could hit some of these shots off of oil-soaked logs in water and I'm not sure he'd feel so much as a wobble.

If he's going to back up, it's going to be due to either course management errors, or putting.

Agreed.

Mickelson can score with the best of them, even on an extremely tough course, but they're all going to need McIlroy to back up significantly tomorrow to make this a golf tournament.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-17-2011 10:35 AM

Remarkable. This is bordering on a coronation.

If Mickelson can put together 2 more days like today, he could get to around -10. But that may not be enough.

Someone in the back half of todays pairings needs to make a big move, or this could be over.

That won't happen.

Today is the scoring day. They've put a bunch of front pins out here on a soft course.

Tomorrow is going to be a massacre if they don't get any rain. If the greens dry out they are borderline dead, and it's going to be like trying to stop the ball on a cart path.

-13. WTF is this craziness. He's making a joke of the USGA and their golf course.

Didn't the piggy-eyed Mick have a meltdown at The Masters this year?

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-17-2011 10:43 AM

And Rory finally hits a snipe.

Calling it a meltdown is probably being kind.

It's only a matter of time until he gets one with his incredible talent. Look at Mickelson, who for the longest time held the "best player to never win a major" title because of his struggles under pressure, before winning four of them.

We're talking about a 22 year-old, though.

Snipe?

I was listening to some post first round analysis yesterday, and someone said that as long as McElroy is putting consistently, he's good.

But if he misses a couple of putts, his entire game goes south.

Any thoughts on that?
