Yep, Wichita schools are closed tomorrow because it's going to be too cold. The vagification of America's youth continues.

I respect the teaching profession and my post was in no way meant to be disrespectful to teachers. I just don't understand the decision to cancel school because of the temperature. My mother would have bundled us up Christmas Story style and made us walk to school.

I'm fine with some common sense about calling it off when it's cold, because I don't presume to know everyone else's situation, and unlike the old days, there typically isn't 1 parent working, and 1 staying home like it was back in the day.

Now, if we can work on getting rid of this everyone's special, let's give them all an award simply for participating, and stop sheltering them from the reality in life that as an adult that won't cut it, then sign me up.

Windchill advisory and extremely low temperatures are very dangerous to kids who have to wait at a bus stop that is (depending on their situation) not close to their house. Defiantly for k-5th graders. Also if a bus were to break down or stop running, they could be stuck out their for up to 2 hours in an advisory. I understand your "back in the old days" attitude towards it... But that's not how it is anymore.

I agree. In 1992 my dad had to die my ass to the highway in a ****ing tractor because our giant 4WD pickup wouldn't make it. Much less the bus.

That being said, schools are TERRIFIED that some jackass parent will send their kid out with some shitty jacket and then sue for damages punitive damages and anything else possible they could think of. It just takes one dumb bastard judge to set the precedent that the schools are liable for parents being jackasses to really **** shit up. It's just not worth it.

Simplicity 02-05-2014 10:42 PM

But that could be coming from a biased Junior in High-school (me)

Yep. Don't have kids yet, so I don't really care, but it's the parents that put the fear into admins over their precious darling catching a chill.

Must be awesome to be a kid though. You get to miss half the winter classes. Shit, even employers are going soft with the cold weather. Maybe naming snow storms and intense media coverage has actually worked to get folks all hysterical over cold winds and a half foot of snow.
