I suppose 298 and 327 isn't going to work. What about 298, 375 and 394?

Any of you want Anthony Castonzo?

I know some of you are desperate for OTs at this point. :D

Am I the first to draft a backup quarterback? I really think Ryan Fitzpatrick could have a good year this year, and it's nice to have insurance at the most important position.

I drafted my back up QB with my first rookie pick and my starter with my first veteran pick. Genious.

I'm going to continue to operate under the assumption that my starting QB will not get hurt, nor will he sexually assault anyone midseason.

This brings up a good point.

Will there be roster requirements, i.e. team must have at least 2 QBs, 4 WR, etc?

Hmm. Good question. I'm not sure exactly how the backups feed into the game model. I'll ping cdcox and ask him.

Your biggest risk will be the bye week.

Ask about gameday inactives, too.

Also, as far as backups, I'm going to guess their impact is decided by how much you want them to play....perhaps we'll be entering the percentage of snaps?

No it won't work that way. Each player has a week labeled 1-16 that corresponds to the weeks his team is scheduled to play. If he plays in his team's week, he is available in your league for that week. If he sits due to injury in his team's 8th game, he sits during Sandbox week 8.

I am gonna sit on the pick hoping that ONE player drops to me.. someone I can't pass on. If he gets taken in next hour then I'll approve the trade, otherwise I will have to pass and take the guy who should have been long gone by now.

Exactly. He'll be fine the other 16 weeks. It's when he has a week off that you should be worrying.

cdcox 08-18-2011 09:01 PM

Ok, here is how depth fits in. Not sure if I'll get all of this implemented in year 1.

A lot of teams rotate their DL to keep them fresh. If you play a DL the whole game, he might wear down in the 4th quarter.

RB don't seem to run down during a game, but you can burn out a RB by giving him too many carries over a season. I'm thinking about an extra penalty in the Sandbox game if a running back gets too many carries in the Sandbox game the year before.

You are going to need extra corners if you want to run nickle and dime packages. You need the right personnel to run various offensive sets. You may want to have a base defense and different personnel for obvious passing situations.

You might need extra personnel to cover injuries. Here is what I'm thinking about for injuries. If your starter goes down and your backup player got a significant number of real NFL stats, you can plug him in and we'll simulate the Sandbox player based on those NFL snaps he ran. If you have a backup that plays the right position but had only a few or no snaps, we will simulate them as a typical NFL backup player. If you have an injury during the season and you don't have a backup that plays the position, you have to go out and get a nameless "street free agent". This guy won't play very well.

You can't dip into the free agent pool for talent during the season, so you better stock your roster with sufficient depth that you don't need to start a "street free agent".

Backups can also be valuable developmental players. if we can get owners to keep their team year after year, eventually people that can spot developmental talent will rise to the top of their league.

If that isn't enough constraints to keep people relatively honest about the distribution of positions across their roster, I might put minimums at each position, but I'd rather give people flexibility for now.

No simulating for backups based on previous seasons?

Actually, I'm guessing that would be impossible implement.

I thought of that, I doubt it adds much information. Plus guys get old and don't play as well as in the past.

Well, I got the guy I wanted.. Austin Collie at #298. If he stays healthy, that is a steal.

Two bugs:

In league 1, I have two "2's" on my draft board, but no "1" how do I know which will be first?

In league 2, when trying to check auto-pick or move around picks on the draft board, error message comes up.

Why not let a team pull a player off of the remaining list of undrafted players if a posiition is depleted by injuries? Or why not allow for trades in that event?

Trades I might be open to, but the NFL has a trade deadline fairly early in the season.

As far as free agents, a few good players are going to emerge from the undrafted talent pool during the NFL season. We'll have a free agent draft to allow people to assimilate that talent into the Sandbox league. I don't want to reward a team with poor depth with a chance to grab one of those players. I'd rather give the poor performing teams a better chance to rebuild their roster and become competitive.

cdcox 08-19-2011 07:23 AM

Kstater -- I arbitrarily picked one and made him your #1 preference. I also turned off your autopick, in case i picked the wrong one.

rageeumr 08-19-2011 07:48 AM

Well, folks, AC reneged on his trade offer, so I still have some quality DTs available for barter. Fairley, Jones or Dockett can be had for a fair price.

You'll have to get pretty aggressive with picks since we're getting kind of late. But I need some help at S and pretty much all offensive skill positions if you're deep anywhere.

That's fine. Ill try to get to a computer at lunch time. Shouldn't be due to pick toll tonight anyway.

Old Dog 08-19-2011 07:58 AM

I liked Griffin at #324. I didn't really NEED another safety with Merriweather and Landry, but he's a young guy that can play either SS or FS. The bad thing is that my defensive backs are the only real strength other than overall youth.

I don't really see anybody on your roster that I think would be a good candidate. I'd like to have Wallace, but I'm going to assume you're not agreeable to that deal.

I'm not sure how the hell to value a rookie in terms of vet picks. What is he worth to you?

Wilkerson doesn't really fit my scheme all that well, but I think he'll be a good player. And since the Jets play a little 4-3 sometimes, hopefully I won't get hurt too bad since he'll play some downs as a 3 technique.
