Others off the top of my head include guys like Ryan Dempster and Shaun Marcum who just got traded.

That Tommy John surgery seems all too common is perhaps the best measure of its success. While there is still a failure rate of 10 to 15 percent, most of these happen on younger subjects. It would be more accurate to say that the pitcher fails himself in most cases, rather than the surgery being the problem. Some think the procedure is becoming too common, with younger and younger patients. Others want to have their "prospect" son given the procedure when young so as to avoid it later.

Strausburg is going to be a very interesting case study. Tremendous talent and elite athlete.

Wood is another great example, though it's arguable about whether or not TJ had a direct impact on his later bout with injuries. What isn't arguable is that it was the start of what would become a trend.

Beyond Carpenter, Moyer is probably the next best example, but we all know that his "style" doesn't make him an apt comparison.

Add the belief that having TJ allows one to throw with greater velocity.

Nothing at all wrong with a one year deal.

and he'll take playing time away from a younger and more talented player.

As long as it's a one year deal and he isn't blocking anybody....no big deal. He's a right handed stick who can play a little defense and won't hurt team chemistry with all the young guys running around in spring training.

Who? Only person I could think of would be David Lough?

Meh, who? The loser of the CF sweepstakes (Dyson/Blanco/Meier)? It's not like we have a real prospect corner OF he'd be blocking.

One year, on something that I KNEW was going to happen anyway ... I'll survive. Doesn't really hurt the team. Just won't really help it, either.

Probably would be best if they platooned Frenchy, though.

See, they should platoon Lough with Frenchy.

Me, I'm tempted to play Dyson in CF because of his D and speed and pick between Blanco and Meier for the bench.
