Probably not much consolation Roy, but best of luck. I don't have much to add to the advice that has already been given. Much of it is VERY wise. I fell into the TV & Computer trap and didn't really search hard for a job for about 4 months. Fortunately, I had a fat nest egg at the time. The operative word being "had".....

Bob Dole 01-27-2001 08:58 AM

Ouch.

Bob Dole wishes you luck.

ROYC75 01-27-2001 09:11 AM

Roger and Otter....

Sorry to here your scoop as well....hang in there....life is only as bad as we make it ,as Chiefs fans,we made it hard on ourselves with the winning of Martyball.hehe

To the rest of my BB freinds,THANKS ! I'm not torn up by this ,matter of fact just the opposite,It's a challenge that I haven't crossed yet,was a little down at 1st with all the deaths in the family.

I didn't like telling everyone that next week was it,the boss tucked his tail between his legs and took off. That s#cked alot,IMHO. The merger thing we will know on Tuesday,I'm suppose to meet with them on Weds. and see if we can come together about a job....already got offers and good leads now. Not braggin here, but it helps to have freinds in this business that I'm in.May have to drive about 30 miles each day 1 way, maybe a little less $$$,but will have to adjust my budget to meet the call!

You all take care and will keep ya posted next week as how this comes down........Dreading the worst and expect the best !

ROYC75 02-01-2001 10:26 AM

Well as you would know...Feb.1st is here...I'm still here!
No merger yet with the other co. Boss said that we might scale back to just 2 people and move on,cut back the dead weight, downsize to nothing and make more profit!

This guy has lost his mind! Crap, now I will have to work more! Nomore easy job approach for me anymore......Here's another thing for ya...he has hinted about moving the bussiness to my house, cut the expeses of having a office!

Will keep ya posted on further developments!

Roy,

Things are actually looking up. I deal with the old IBM AS/400 workhorse and thier actually short on people in that area.

The Visual Basic guys were the ones who got escourted to the parking lot.

I can't believe I have 30 more years of this crap. Someday I hope I'm not depending on a big soul-less corporation for a living.

Invest, Invest, Invest

You were right though, as Chief fans we chose a tough road a long time ago.

ROYC75 02-01-2001 01:58 PM

Otter....

What line of work you do ? We use the as/400 system on this bussiness.I guess it's a popular format to use!

When I started for this guy,we had 20 employees...went to 30 within a year...cut back to 10 and now down to 2 ( thanks to last weeks decision).

Otter 02-01-2001 07:16 PM

ROY,

I write logistics software in RPG/CL format.

For the 10 or so years most everybody coming out of college has been trained on a PC platorform with UNIX in a close second. The PC side of the IT industry is becoming flooded while the 400 (older and thought to be extinct by now) sector is really short on experience and talent, or even intrest for that matter.

Mainframes don't have a nice little GUI and aren't pretty to look at but they run a business day in and day out without the crashes, reboots and weak security like an NT based system.

Another interesting little tid-bit, an AS/400 has never had a virsus! Their systems configuration doesn't allow it like the piss-poor security of Windows.

Wow - did I just write all that? Sorry, guess I went off on a tangent!

Anyway, thats what I do and its a your right, its a very popular platform and will be for years. If you don't mind me asking, what does your company do? Is it a dot-com casualty or somthing un-related?

Roy - Wow!! Good Luck to you, man.

I sympathize.

Chiefaholic 02-01-2001 09:18 PM

Hey bud....

The same thing happened to me a little over a month ago. It started off with a supposedly one week layoff (entire plant) the week befor Christmas. Then on December 23rd I recieved a certified letter in the mail (Fed Ex) stating that the company had declared bankruptcy and everybody was permanently laid off. I was off for four weeks befor I found another job, but things worked out.

FTR... If there is more than 50 employees where you work, you can recieve two years books and tuition (courtesy of Uncle Sam) and one years unemployment benefits while going to school.

Good Luck

Hey Otter,

Re: #19 "I can't believe I have 30 more years of this crap. Someday I hope I'm not depending on a big, soul-less corporation for a living."

You sound like a typical USPS employee. In other words, ME!
LOL!

ROYC75 02-02-2001 08:38 AM

Otter........

I run a Trucking Co/agency for a guy who is with the Biggest Owner-Operator base Co. In the US. It's called Landstar,it has 4 sister co's in it. The guy I work for hired me to dispatch trks then throu people getting fired or quitting,I moved up to the Operations Manager.

This is a very tuff competitive business and it is very hard to find good help, someone that wants a career as a Over the Road Trk Driver. I've done it,not the job for a family type guy! I went into the management part cause I didn't want to be gone anymore. With the this business,to many things affect the industry in terms of operational cost. Plus some bad planning on his part,no doubt some things I advised him about not doing!

Some people have a feel for things and some people just roll the dice! I have nothing about rolling the dice on a gamble, but smart enuff when to bailout of something than to hold on till it destroys you and the Co.

Oh well,I'll keep you posted,Looks like after all is said and done, myself and maybe 1 more might keep our jobs, right now we have scaled back to just 2 office employees and sent the rest of the drivers and staff home!

C YA ! :D

Bob Dole 02-03-2001 03:35 PM

Roy,

You might check out http://www.BubbaJunk.com and look around. Bob Dole hasn't wandered the site, but drinks at the same bar as the owner (and most of his staff) and knows that their target market is the trucking industry.

ROYC75 02-05-2001 09:42 AM

Now there is just 1 left....this place is like a ghostown. I'm it! No more news on the merge...maybe it won't happen and I'll be by myself....dang it,have to work now for a living.

Thanks Bob...will check it out!

C YA !

Wow! what a GREAT week!

I got hired as a Network Help Desk Support Specialist at Sprint PCS this week. I start the end of the month and can finally tell HRBLOCK (seasonal) to kiss my a$$!

You know... I went to pick up my check at Block and they didn't even have them at 2 o'clock in the freaking evening. Thats place is so dis-organized.

Anyhow... excited I got the new gig and all of a sudden all things are looking up for now.
