There's a place in Sioux City that's sold dogs for about 70 years. It's run by two Greek families that keep it in the family. It is quite popular and very busy most days at lunch.
I asked one of the owners once how many dogs they sell in a day. He said on a good Saturday they'll sell a thousand. Not too bad since they're small, about $1.90 per dog. They also sell awesome chili. Two dogs, a bowl of chili, and a coke cost about $8. Not too bad a way to make a living.
Anyway, in newspaper accounts they have framed on the wall the record for one person at one sitting was done by a GI that had just come back from WWII. Back then they were open 24 hours a day and they claim this guy sat there and ate 43 hot dogs and 20 or so cokes (back then they came in little bottles) all during one visit. No idea how long it took him though.
A few of my buddies have been saying we should have an eating contest there, with the loser buying all the food. I think we don't do it because we're all too cheap and afraid of having to pick up the bill.
My son and I ate there Friday, 5 dogs, 2 pops, and one small bag of chips was $14. The place is a bleeping gold mine.
