They were probably the best out there, but I'm embarrassed about that since they're a chain restaurant.

There was some place that was supposedly legendary that was way outside town, as in an hour or more. I made a field trip out there with some friends once and our scores were:

Judge 1: Meh.
Judge 2: (Shrug) Okay, I guess.
Judge 3: Meh.
Judge 4: Fantastic.
Judge 5: I wasted half a day on this?
Judge 6: Pretty decent.

We threw out the Romanian and Japanese judges' scores since they were the high and low.

Do you know which neighborhoods this type of people live in?

I've got friends that live north of downtown and south of downtown. Optimally, you want to live on the west side of I-35 (it gets progressively sketchier on the east side). It is generally accepted that south/west Austin is the best part of town. There are a lot of apartments in the area that are relatively cheap, too.

I can send a text to my friends in Austin and see what they think...

Are you talking about The Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX?

I know people disagree, but it's the best BBQ I've ever had. Oh and Austin is a nice city, but the traffic is a bitch....like every other big city.

I sent away for an Austin relocation guide in the mail, its pretty helpful. The trade off is they spam the shit out of your email, which stops coming once I send it to the spam box.

Re: All traffic comments.

Yeah I grew up in Phoenix and traffic really sucked out there, definitely compared to Lincoln, NE where I've been since, but probably not as bad as some other places. I never really got too fed up with it, though.

Had them in Tampa FL when I lived there. It was one of the worst parts of living there. They aren't your typical big-city/northern cockroach ("German"), but are called "palmetto bugs" (which means "giant ****ing roach that flies").

Are you Romanian? Maybe it's a Romanian thing.

Been here for over 6 months and never saw one of those. Starting to think they are an urban myth.

The ones in Austin didn't fly, but they were these enormous armored bugs that were segmented so that they moved like semi trucks with double trailers. I think they called them wood roaches or something. They came inside only on accident so they weren't that bad, but man oh man you hated to walk into a room and see one of them standing there looking at you face to face.

I think there's a guy who posts here occasionally from that general area.

What's his username again?

Highly recommend it. I lived just off of Town Lake, on the south side of the water. We were about a half block from the Hike and Bike trail and the water. I highly recommend the area. South Lamar and Barton Springs was the area.

Gorgeous weather. Great food. Fun, nice people. Definitely a laid back town.
