I never realized how incredibly stupid the English language is until I had kids and had to think about what I was teaching them.

house --> houses
mouse --> mice

goose --> geese
moose --> moose


pay --> paid
pray --> prayed


And on and on and on and on. It's just a mass of inconsistent, illogical rules that you just need to memorize.

I did some English tutoring when I was in Korea in grad school, and I often had to resort to, "Because that's the way it is" as an explanation. Koreans don't really appreciate that answer, either.

At times, if this is all I can give my kids as an explanation, they simply choose not to believe me and go on saying it the wrong way. Who knows, maybe they'll start a trend.....

Yup, it seems that 90% of the words that I use that would need the rule i before e except after c actually break the rule, like weird, science and their.
