This will surely calm the fears of those who thought this was nothing more than a government designed hoax designed to get your computer information.

BoneKrusher 07-09-2012 04:59 PM

I'm usually anti-conspiracy theory. But I did find it slightly odd that the FBI would step in to a matter like this, and even go so far as to take down the malware DNS servers and replace them with their own. For one, why replace it with their own? Are we to believe they did this out of the goodness of their heart to help people? Why this malware and not others? Second, why not just shut the DNS servers off in the first place? People would lost internet, but that should be acceptable loss seeing as how they were using a fake server in the first place. If they got that malware, they're likely to have more and need to scan their computer anyway. Losing internet routing would encourage that, instead of rerouting the user automatically without the user knowing they were exploited. And last, if the FBI was in control of infected people's DNS routing, why not just route everyone to a page explaining how to fix their faulty DNS? That would be completely simple. For every infected machine, just route every address they type in to a page on an FBI server explaining how to fix it. No scan tool necessary.

sometimes the government is really just trying to help its citzens. It does happen from time to time. But a healthy does of paronia never hurt anyone other than being to quick to flush the stash.

I can't tell if I have been affected by this?

JD10367 07-09-2012 07:56 PM

From what little I read about it, apparently this virus stopped circulating in 2007. So only computers from 2007 would be affected, and that's only if you haven't run a modern virus program on it. Not for nothing but, if you're running a five-year-old POS without modern virus scanning, you deserve to lose your Internet.

You have. Badly. Very badly. Now thank the government for saving your ass.
