He always lived life on his own terms, and made that his mantra. He never listened to the call of a higher power, be it political, social, or religious. So, suicide was really his only option.

I agree. But, I think that 99% of the people in the world would agree that being stoned out of your head 24 hours a day is not "real life". But, it was his choice and he lived as he wanted to live. As I said, to each his own.
