Yeah you can't always bypass an ac compressor. It depends on how the belt is routed.

I'm a Service Writer and basically all I do is put together estiamtes and hunt down parts all day long. What all was on the estimate to "do it right"? I could put together a quick est and see if you're getting screwed. Its Probably Compressor, condensor, drier/accumulator, orifice tube/expansion valve, maybe a liquid line then the evac and recharge and of course labor

I appreciate that-let me try and get the written estimate emailed. I see you are in the NoVA area. I'm in Herndon

DC.chief 03-21-2013 12:26 PM

Sounds like the compressor clutch locked up and broke the belt which is why you had all the other issues

DC.chief 03-21-2013 12:27 PM

I'm in Dale city but the shop I work at is in dumfries off 234

This is where scho63 figures out DC.chiefs works at the place where he took his car....."Oh, crap I forgot to carry a one....it's actually $2,700 to do it right

So, now we get to sit back and wait for the inevitable Battle Royale between Extorter and Jason'sAuto.

I could see that as far as the electrical failures go, but the electrical smoke pouring out of the dash?

maybe the belt burning if it locked up?

nope i put the doucher on ignore.

i just checked and there isnt a bypass pulley available for that car.

could just be the clutch fried though. ask about just possibly replacing that alone

Yeah the belt snapping wouldn't cause something like that. Possibly multiple things going on there. Perhaps the other estimate has some kind of explanation of that. No belt means no alternator and low voltage which can cause screwy electrical stuff

would the clutch failure itself cause all the other problems?

DC.chief 03-21-2013 12:38 PM

Actually I use to deal with a lot of the shops up around your area scho63, mind if I asked who gave you the estimate? might have some insight

SAUTO 03-21-2013 12:39 PM

it would take some work but if you removed the ac compressor i think you could figure out a belt that would just run off of the crank, tensioner and the alt.

somewhat trial and error with figuring out the belt length
