Those were the days. Thanks for the memories Fred.

One of my all time favorite calls on radio and yes, it really happened. A slow roller between the mound and first base.
Denny Matthews: ... and the pitcher was off the mound like a mongoose. Fred White: Like a ... mongoose, Denny? Denny Matthews: Yes, Fred, ... like a mongoose. (both laugh hysterically) RIP, Fred. You have been, and will always, be missed. |
Well, damn.

RIP. You and Denny were awesome.

This really hit me today. Not like losing Derrick Thomas, but still it hurt. Fred White was always so interwoven with Royals baseball for me because I religiously listened to the Royals on radio as a kid.
I don't know. George Brett turning 60 on the same day Fred White died hammers home how long it's been since we've been relevant in baseball and how BADLY I want this team back on top. RIP Fred!!!! |
My own mortality always comes to mind when we lose somebody from my baseball life.

I was searching for Fred's radio call of Brett's 1980 ALCS homer off Goose Gossage. Couldn't find it.
On my way in to work 810 played it. I memorized Fred's call and could recite it, but it's never been as good as listening to him call it. |

RIP Fred!! Sitting on the front porch at night listening to Fred and Denny was a very happy memory for any Royals fan in the 70's and 80's. Even when I went away to school in Arkansas I would go to the car and try to find the broadcast on the am radio. Amongst crackles and static, Fred and Denny's voice would come thru and it would feel like home again.

Another great baseball voice leaves us.
RIP Fred. |
man, takes you back..
RIP Fred, another standard in KC culture.... |
Class act. RIP, Fred.
