Bummer....the Wheel Inn is still there, with the famous Gooberburger.

Hayes Hamburgers FTW

I love real-deal drive-in burgers. None of this Sonic or Whataburger shit. Whataburger is a Texas institution, and we all know Texas has herpes.

I know the Guberburger is classic, but Goody's Steakburgers is better than Wheel Inn.

I ate at a Whataburger in Norman, OK and I thought it was pretty damn good. But that was back in 1995, they probably have herpes now as well.

The balance of Okie hate for all things Texas may have offset the suckage somewhat.

The Wheel Inn was at US 65 and US 50 in Sedalia for years. When they widened the highways, MODot bought the land, and the Wheel Inn had to move. They moved about four blocks south on US 65, closer to the Missouri State Fairgrounds.

They're famous for putting a peanut butter sauce on their hamburgers, called "The Gooberburger." I've had one. It's OK, not fantastic, just, well, different.

But the locals have been eating them for years.

John Bothwell was a lawyer, mover and shaker in Missouri politics in the early 1900s. The "luxury" hotel in Sedalia was built by the Bothwells, it's still open: http://www.hotelbothwell.com/

The local hospital in Sedalia is named after him, as is a state park just north of Sedalia. The park is a mansion Bothwell owned that's up on a limestone cliff with a commanding view of Pettis County. He was a major mojo in Sedalia in his day, to say the least.

That sounds interesting, in an Elvis-Munchies sort of way. I lived in Pinetop Az. for a while and we had this place called "The Lions Den". It was known for the "Wineburger":

That's okay. We're going to be discussing peanut butter and bacon sandwiches soon, and you can take the lead.
