He never gets his team off to a good start we don't get touchdowns on opening drives because Alex Smith doesn't get the drive going. He is not good a matriculating the ball down the field with his dink and dunks that don't get us first downs that sustain drives that lead to touchdowns. |
He plays like not losing his job is more important than winning.
I also think he can't read defenses pre-snap. |
Grow a pair and call a few more of your own plays. Keep the ball more on read option.

Smith doesn't take risks because he lacks the talent to make up for those mistakes.
He is the Anti-Brett Favre. |
There are more haters on this site than true fans, which makes it difficult to want to read your posts. I fall somewhere in the middle, if there was a better free agent out there I'd be on board but there isn't. So, I'm for drafting a qb high in the draft this year and grooming him until he superceds Alex Smith, even if that's day 1 but even that is unlikely because Alex is a qb that can win you the divison, even next year. Alex is a smart qb who needs to be set free, Andy needs to let Alex call most of these plays at the line of scrimmage in a hurry up offence. I've watched some good football from Alex when the defense is playing on its heels.

Having Alex as our QB is like...forfeiting the position altogether.

I'll contribute to both threads and like that you're doing this. Because I don't hate Alex Smith, but I don't think he's the answer.
And his biggest problem is his lack of urgency. He thinks he should be managing games. So he refuses to play 4 full quarters. If the defense does its job, Alex waits till the 4Q to strike. If they don't, to his credit, he can keep up in a shootout, but he becomes a terrible QB when he's protecting a big lead. Also to his credit, he's become a good late 4Q QB, but he's not elite. But it will never make sense to me why he doesn't play every single quarter like it was the 4th quarter in a close game. And that formula is never going to work in the AFC when you're constantly facing heavyweight clutch QBs. And it sucks, because when Alex is aggressive, so many things open up. The OL protects better and the running game gets going because defenses aren't crowding the box. The WRs get excited about being allowed to make plays. He gets TDs because Alex is a terrible red zone QB but can actually score TDs from shots downfield. And that mentality isn't going to change at this point in his career. Much as I had hoped Andy Reid would turn him around. |

Not just with Alex but with the offense as a whole. But I will say that it's hard for the other offensive players to have a sense of urgency if the QB doesn't. So it starts there. I also think a lot of this falls on Reid as well |
