TX - you're getting into the 'Catch-22' argument now.

Elvis was 'protected' by a conservative O - because he cannot pass. He could not pass when it was necessary because he was 'protected' by the conservative O.

You see the lack of logic here?

I'm just nervous as hell about three things...our cornerbacks!!! our running back situation and Grbac.

Grbac has done some nice things as far as displaying more confidence on the field...but his lack of intensity and emotion sometimes concerns me. I think he may have just learned to hide the fear and disappointment he displayed earlier in his career and now just tries to put on a poker face even though many of the same emotions are present - I still think he is unconfident and the system he is in is not going to help boost his ego - run, run, run. But I'm reserving my final judgement until this season is over...I give him a 50% chance of succeeding http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

H.C.,
No lack of logic at all. I'll translate it for you:

Elvis was 'protected' by a conservative O - because he cannot pass. He could not pass when he had to because he's not smart enough to run the whole offense so the Chiefs had to limit things. Thus, when the team needs a quick score or when it needs to play catch-up, Elvis is asked to do the very things that he does not do all the time...and he screws up. How's that for logic? <BR>

Elvis did fine for me in my fantasy football league last year. I had to take a lot of ribbing for taking him. I just hope he can improve on last year.

GE,
Was Grbac your starter or a back-up? I cashed in on my Fantacy League - get this, I drafted Kurt Warner as my back-up. Nobody had ever heard of him. I won the whole thing much like the Rams. I came out of NOWHERE because I usually finish near the bottom. I had a lethal combination of Warner and Gonzo and I had the Chiefs defense (9 scores). It wasn't even close. I'll NEVER get that lucky again.
BTW, I'd STAY AWAY from Grbac this year if I were you, unless you can get him late. just my opinion.

Fat Homer 08-25-2000 08:06 AM

TX - that is absolutely ludicrous! If Grbac is so horrible, why in the hell is he still on our roster? Why is he regarded in most circles as the best QB in the AFCW? The problem is: you blamed Elvis for the '97 playoff loss & haven't moved past it (am I wrong?).

The guy has shown improvement - at least give him a chance to prove what he can/cannot do in a real game before you proclaim him the next coming of Steve Bono.

The Blessed Virgin Larry 08-25-2000 09:03 AM

HC,
I blame Marty for the '97 playoff loss. Grbac played well in that one, except at the most critical point when he needed to use his head and step up. I'll go to my grave believing that Gannon should have started that one because he had the hot hand.

Grbac is on our roster because of the $$$. That also played a big part in why he was the "chosen one" instead of Gannon. Grbac has not ever had to earn the starting job - he's had it handed to him right from the start. He's never had to "produce to play" and it has hurt him IMHO.

I don't care who says he's the best in the West. I form my own opinions based on how I see him play. Now I do agree that he has the BEST ARM in the West, the best play action and long ball, but NOT the most smarts or scrambling ability, leadership, or improvising. In other words, there's MORE to being a good NFL QB than having a great arm. This is where he falls short IMO. It's NOT all his fault - Grbac has NOT been afforded the benefit of good coaching or good O- Coordinators or, here's the best one, or a legit feature RB to help him.

I really don't see the improvement in the "thinking department" and that has always been my argument. There's NO DOUBT that Grbac has the physical skills, but IMHO he does not have what it takes upstairs. I'll certainly give Grbac every chance to prove me wrong - except now I won't bet on it or hold my breath.

Fat Homer 08-25-2000 09:07 AM

Very well said! I do not disagree with the gist of your post: Grbac was 'handed' the job and has not received proper coaching.

You know something? That is really scary - when the GM screws up by offering an unknown huge amounts of $$, then forces that player to the fore-front so that he(the GM) will not be castigated for making a foolish move. CP's ego is more important than the productivity of our O it seems.

sun 08-25-2000 09:12 AM

HC
How many chances does he deserve? He is an average QB at best. He will never have the leadership to take them far and will never get respect until he takes charge. You can't lead a team without being able to lead yourself. Maybe he has it in him, maybe he doesn't. Watch him closely......do you see any intensity?

Fat Homer 08-25-2000 09:22 AM

47 - this year is it! If Grbac does not improve over last season's performance, which BTW was actually above average statistically, then I would make a move for another QB (Trent Green possibly).

sun 08-25-2000 09:30 AM

I think Grbac has plenty to offer. He just hasn't figured out how to do it. I will support him and hope that he proves many people, including me, wrong. I will, however, never jump on the Grbac bandwaggon.

Fat Homer 08-25-2000 09:34 AM

I do feel for the guy... I mean heck - if the mayor of SanFran called me a waste of space, then I went on to a new team - only to be injured 2x, blamed for losing a playoff game, and booed constantly - while never having a QB coach who actually played QB, I'd be pretty darn depressed! (Actually, I'd be pissed) http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/wink.gif

The Blessed Virgin Larry 08-26-2000 12:14 AM

I'm convinced now more than ever that the WHOLE offensive system is BAD. Is it by chance that ALL our QB's $UCK? I don't think so. IMHO, It will NOT matter who's the QB in Raye's system. Doomed to FAIL!
