I don't know. Are adults more capable of handling bullying? Or is it more that adults (typically) are mature enough to not inflict it on another person?

I don't know how extreme Martin's "abuse" was. But its not hard to imagine how being constantly harrassed at your workplace could begin to break a person down.

It's entirely possible that Martin is being a big pussy. It's also not hard to imagine humans being inhuman.

Incognito was called out by "unnamed sources" for being head of the bullying pack.

That says to me a few things: 1) he must have been doing something above and beyond to be called out for it; 2) where the **** is the organization and coaching staff on this, that you have anonymous sources leaking guys' names to the media? You almost wonder if players knew something was wrong, but were afraid to speak up about it.

Really juvenile behavior and a childish response.
They should all be embarrassed.

That is my initial reaction but I'm still wait and see as the Dolphins actually excusing Martin is potentially telling.

This reminds me of that RT we had under Dick Vermeil era I think his name was Christainson or something? He started out playing real good for the season and then had a fluke illness and never was the same. After that we have had shit RT after shit RT.

Isn't the first reaction to downplay it or cover it up? Miami seems pretty upfront about telling "the whole story" and they've been quick to defend Martin. That's pretty unusual. There's definitely potential this is a lot worse, and both parties are agreeing to stick to a back story.

SPN: Martin fears retribution from Incognito
Posted by Mike Florio on November 3, 2013, 10:59 AM EST
Incognito AP

Yep, the Jonathan Martin situation keeps getting weirder.

At a time when the Dolphins claim that tackle Jonathan Martin hasn’t alleged that he was bullied or harassed by any teammates and Incognito has demanded on Twitter that his name be cleared, Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN report that Martin hasn’t formally accused anyone of bullying or harassment because he fears retribution.

Per the report, Martin specifically fears retribution from guard Richie Incognito (pictured).

Schefter detailed a situation in which Martin was intimidated by Incognito to contribute $15,000 toward a trip to Las Vegas by the team’s offensive lineman. Martin, according to Schefter, didn’t want to go and ultimately didn’t go — but he surrendered the money anyway.

If true, it’s the really rich guy example of someone stealing someone else’s lunch money.

Schefter also explained that there are text messages and at least one voice message proving harassment and justifying Martin’s fears for retribution. Schefter added that Martin’s recent comments to Incognito explaining that Martin doesn’t blame his teammates for harassment also arose from concerns by Martin that he’ll face retaliation if he accuses Incognito of doing anything wrong.

Until Martin makes a formal complaint of bullying, the Dolphins will be able to declare that everything is fine. Even if the truth is that everything is far from it.

'Hamas' Jenkins 11-03-2013 10:57 AM

Why not just cut Incognito now?

Martin headed for NFI list, may never return to the Dolphins
Posted by Mike Florio on November 3, 2013, 10:17 AM EST
Jonathan Martin AP

The situation involving Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin continues to get more and more bizarre.

In the wake of the Dolphins issuing an “all is well” statement, it’s clear that all isn’t well. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Martin will be placed on the non-football illness list as soon as Tuesday. Per Rapoport, Martin doesn’t feel comfortable returning to the team “unless the situation changes drastically in the Dolphins locker room.”

So Martin hasn’t complained of bullying, but he thinks things need to change dramatically in order to return to the team?

If the problem for Martin flows not specifically from the Miami locker room but generally from the culture of the NFL locker room, changes would need to happen in every locker room before Martin could play again.

Then there’s the question of whether the NFLPA is or isn’t investigating the situation. NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith has called the situation a “major priority,” and subsequent reports indicated that an investigation was occurring. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN the probe initially focused on guard Richie Incognito.

Now, the NFLPA has said there’s no investigation, and Incognito has demanded via Twitter that his name be cleared.

To add even more confusion to an already confusing situation, Rapoport says that “the NFLPA has not launched an investigation” but the union is in “information gathering mode.”

How is that different than an investigation?

Our guess based on all the available facts and reports and circumstances is that Martin believes something happened beyond the confines of the normal and accepted behavior of an NFL locker room, but that Martin realizes it’s not in his interests to officially complain about bullying. Instead, Martin likely hopes that things will change without Martin causing specific problems for any of his teammates or for the organization.

Regardless of the truth, we’ve got a feeling that this specific story has plenty of remaining twists, turns, and contradictions.

I'm thinking Martin is likely gay. I still don't understand how one grown man can allow himself to be bullied out of 15k.

Incognito reminds me of this douchebag I knew in college. He was a football player and would routinely get drunk and pick fights with people at frat parties. One night I was sober driving and apparently someone decided they were fed up with his bullshit and they brained him over the head with a beer bottle. I made my last rounds of the party house for the night and was prepared to head home when this crumpled mass beckons me.

He's laying on the ground in a small pool of blood, and he cocks his head forward, saying,

"Can you please take me to the hospital?"

I tell him, "Sorry, asshole, you're going to have to bleed."

Mr. Laz 11-03-2013 11:04 AM

Guy doesn't want to come out and say 'they are picking on me' and have that follow him around all over. He doesn't want to go back to Miami and have the same guys harass him all the time.

Miami just needs to trade/cut him and let him get a fresh start

If the bullying was out of line, which seems to be the case, then I'm a little more sympathetic to the guy taking the abuse.

Context is important. Was it worse than anywhere else? Even without context, is it something that needs to stop anyway?

It's time the player's union look into hazing, at least when it comes to money. Maybe forcing rookies to pay for a $15,000 trip to Vegas happens everywhere, but it shouldn't happen anywhere.

I've never seen the"pay for a trip" thing. I was referring to the dinner tab part. As I understand it they only do it to the high draft pick, big contract rooks. It's a rite of initiation thing, doesn't bother me a bit.

I think it's a practice that needs to be stopped. Haze all you want. But don't involve big chunks of money. A few years ago, it was reported that Dez Bryant had to pay $50,000+ for dinner. I don't care how much these players make. That has to stop.

No doubt. I just have a much bigger problem with a guy like Incognito who seems to take douche baggery to a new level. And the organization that didn't seem to do anything to stop it.

Martin isn't a rookie anymore. And he is a teammate. If there's any truth to taking bullying beyond simple teasing or hazing, Incognito should be cut yesterday.

Ryan Leaf and Dez Bryant tried to fight back. They got called out for being whiney. When Leaf refused to pay for an expensive meal, Seau stole his credit card, paid the tab anyway, and then clocked him in practice. You aren't allowed to fight back because you have a full roster of veterans ready to make your life worse.

These dudes are ****ing huge, I'll admit. I, like KCUnited, was extremely small and always looked about four years younger than I actually was. There were a few instances of "bullying" I dealt with, but they were mostly isolated and I couldn't even bring myself to say it was true bullying. I got made fun of and ****ed with a bit just like every other normal and abnormal person..

So, I don't know- I just can't see allowing myself to be intimidated into doing shit monetarily like these guys are. If someone comes to steal my wallet I'm ****ing fighting for my life, no joke. I'd never let someone take something from me while I could still throw a punch.

If you go through life showing you are sensitive and easy to anger you're gonna get messed with more just the way it is.

If I was defending a guy who got kicked off the nebraska team I would have said he did nothing wrong. Nowhere did I ever make such a statement.

I figured you would be all up in this thread you are such a cry baby bitch who complains in literally everyt thread that's posted in the lounge.

You aren't allowed to fight back because you have a full roster of veterans ready to make your life worse..

At least Seau finally got his comeuppance, even if it came at his own hand. ****ing piece of shit that guy was.

You are the biggest one.

That isn't just a Miami problem. It's a systemic problem with the culture of football.

Incognito is a total piece of shit - that is besides the point.

If you think people have to like you and must sit & eat with you, else it is 'bullying', you are a big fat hairy dripping bleeding pussy and you are what is wrong with the world. Grow a damned pair!

SAUTO 11-03-2013 07:38 PM

Stupid, try it being you vs the lockerroom. Hard to go against everyone there, esp since some dont want to get involved and back the 'weirdo' up
