So, you don't mind taking the benefits of this nation, and will gladly take whatever you can from it, including our tax dollars, but will head for the hills if you ever have to do something for America, is that correct?

chagrin 07-27-2006 09:41 AM

I'm sorry if that seems like I am being a jerk, but the way you wrote it, I don't really know how else to take the tone.

Please don't buy into the libby's scare tactics regarding a draft, you aren't going anywhere unless you join the military, then you should expect to go somewhere and stand fast.

Yeah. I figure that they'll just keep upping the age requirement. My parents can get SS as early as 62, but I think my eligibility age is 70. Yours will probably end up being 80 unless we can convince Donger to have about 50 million more children.

I almost recieved my citizenship about 2 years ago, but I missed my appointment date ( I was out of the country - back home in Argentina) and I never re - scheduled.

Now, I am not so sure I want to become one, just because of the fear there might be a draft in the near future (I am only 24 and out of college) and I would have to go to war because of a loan I signed for to finish College.

I would be taking my family to Argentina at that point.

I was going to be drafted in Argentina, but then they made it voluntary instead of obligatory. My Dad, my uncles were all drafted by the military during the dictatorship times (Dirty War), when the police and military were corrupt... Those were scary times...

I doubt that there'll be a draft anytime soon unless we get into a tussle with Iran, and I doubt that'll happen.

An acquaintance of mine in grad school was Argentinian, and he got drafted for the Falklands War. He wasn't looking forward to fighting the British, but he ended up guarding some mountain outpost near Chile, so he never saw any action. I always wondered if that was dumb luck, or if his family knew enough people for him to do a Bush or Clinton.

Nah, thats not how I see it,

I was not born in the US, this is really not my country,

Do i benefit from school, work and such, but I pay taxes too... I cant vote, I get harrased at airports pre 9/11 and after... whatever

If I had to do something for America I would do it, I am American, (South), but if the US wants to go to war vs Syria/Iran/ Russia/N Korea and China...

I will go back home and stay Neutral...

I was born during the Falkland war, that was the most stupid war ever fought... f the Monroe Doctrine... The US helped the British on this one...

I think that is why we stay neutral....

Rain Man 07-27-2006 10:12 AM

Heh. I never thought about that vis a vis the Monroe Doctrine.

If you missed your naturalization and haven't bothered to re-schedule it, perhaps you have no reasonable foundation from which to complain about not being able to vote.

Of course the US helped the UK during the Falklands war. You say that like it's a surprise. The UK is our closest ally and they most likely always will be.

The Monroe doctrine had nothing to do with this war. In addition the Monroe doctrine is an outdated philosophy that is not used today.

Its no surprise... I wasnt complaining, do I hate the US for helping the UK no, this was a stupid war to begin with that led to democracy and the downfall of our military dictatorship....

Now, a little history lesson,

back in the 1800's, the falkland islands (malvinas) were property of Spain, when Argentina declared their Independance in and around 1816-1820, they became property of Argentina,

For some f'ed up reason back in the 1820's, the US declared the Islands free and the UK took them away....

The US declared them free of Argentine rule because the Argentina gov had captured and jailed 3 US Citizen fisherman on the island.

Am I mad, no, but thats f'ed up...

Meaning that a Felon had the same right as a Legal and/or illegal on the voting issue, I was trying to make a point.

carlos3652 07-27-2006 10:26 AM

a 3rd term for George W ...

ChiefaRoo 07-27-2006 10:31 AM

In that time frame the UK and US were still colonial powers. I agree It's f***ed up by todays standards because it would violate various laws but back then if your country was militarily stronger than many times they took the lands of less powerful countries and called it a day. Not fair but much of history is like that.

The Rain Manroe Doctrine specifically prohibits the intervention of non-American posters in this part of the BB.

MahiMike 07-27-2006 11:09 AM

"Some crazy despot is elected president."

Good thing no crazies have read this post yet. We'd be referring to Trick Cheney as 'pres'...

The Dude Abides 07-27-2006 01:17 PM

Hey Mr.Argentine man, what happens if you get caught with a firearm? slap on the wrist, at most. Me, I get 5 years. Even for just holding it. Illegal border jumper gets off scott free, even though they break the law just by being here. Path toward citizenship, welfare, and you ask how they have more rights than an ex felon? Get a clue or go back :hmmm:

djrcmay 07-27-2006 03:20 PM

If they prohibited FAST FOOD!

Not sure I blame you, fighting in Iraq is about as wasteful as it gets post overthrow of Saddam. The US seems to not know where it should limit itself. But I would hope that if the US were attacked you would be willing to fight.
