i relistened to the donold glover podcast on nerdist today. Back to the future musical

Baby Lee 04-21-2011 08:53 AM

Hearing Danielle Koenig sent me to the archives of NNF, and I found the most awkward podcast in terms of not knowing the future.

It aired on 03/25/09

I kid you not, in the space of 1/2 hour they;

bantered with Andrew Koenig [OK, that's weak sauce as he was on the staff up to his death].

[Suicide 11 months later]

Discussed Michael Jackson's sold out London concert set, and how amazing it is he still has it.

[Dead 3 months to the day later]

Talked about A-Rod's prostitute scandal, leading to the assessment that the best case of the guy hitting the pinnacle of his sport without scandal was Tiger Woods.

[Busted open 8 months to the day later]

Talked about 8-mile and what a sexy-sexy vixen Brittany Murphy is.

[Dead juuuuust short of 9 months later]

That's a pretty dense bit of portent right there.

Also just wrapped on 2nd season of Todd Margaret, John Hamm guest stars.

I've paid pretty close attention, and Cera always skirts it, and the rest say something along the lines of 'I'd love to, I'm sure Mitch Hurwitz is planning something great. I'll be on board if and when it comes together.'

This was the first time I've heard someone in the know flat out state 'we are making the Arrested Development movie.'

If you have quotes to the contrary, let me know.

Just like rumors of the Super Troopers II movie.

John Hamm on nerdist was funny. I listen to Michelle Beadle on Espn Podcast, she is my imaginary girlfriend, funny cute, and not overly annoying about sports.

You owe it to yourself to stop everything immediately and go get the episode of Doug Loves Movies where the guests are Cake Boss, El Chupakabra and Don Demilo.

It's probably funnier if your already familiar with the characters, but tears are literally streaming down my face from laughter right now.

I spend most of my days at this point driving to and from work listening to WTF and periodically Doug Loves Movies (I'll listen to the recommended below tomorrow). WTF is just really well done. I've listened to a couple dozen, but many more where that came from. Today was Judd Apatow. I was particularly entertained by the Norm McDonald WTF.....good stuff there.

Baby Lee 01-11-2012 09:00 AM

Not a funny podcast, and almost worthy of a DC move [more for it generating more interest there, than it being a shitty DC topic], but the most recent 'This American Life' is fascinating.

It's a little different from TAL's MO, as it covers only a single subject, in only two acts.

The first half consists of Mike Daisey's monologue about visiting Foxconn in Shenzen China. The second half deals with fact corrrection and follow-up.

For those unfamilar, Foxconn is the company that makes most of the consumer electronics we consume. Of recent interest, the Ipod and Ipad are manufactured there.
Foxconn employs 300-450K, and Shenzen went from being a medium-sized city of around 350K in the early 80s, to a megalopolis of 11+M today following a trade agreement where China granted corporations free reign to develop a manufacturing base in the area.

Of note, obviously there is the economies of scale. Daisey paints vibrant pictures of the size of facilities and commissaries. Also, the fact that everything is hand made. With labor so cheap, anything that can be made by hand is made by hand. Workers being more fungible and reliable than machinery. Daisey poignantly points out how we pine for the old days of hand-crafting, when the reality is more is hand-made today than at any point in history. Only, instead of a craftsman lovingly crafting a work of art, it's 100s of thousands of faceless workers toiling on endless assembly lines for little pay.

A third prong is his interactions with 12-15 yo workers.

Baby Lee 01-26-2012 01:12 PM

Patton Oswalt on Adam Carolla [after Aceman makes an analogy about young guys entering fame not being prepared to go from seeking pussy to having pussy seek you] : "You're like a meth addict who's stolen the idea of poetry. You're doing donuts with it in a parking lot and burning out all of the gears. And they're like 'would you just give us poetry back?'

"But, . . pussy OUT OF A CANNON!!"'

"Oh, God!! He threw a rod on that one"

Bald Bryan: "A true beat-off poet."

One thing I've noticed that is unavoidably evident. A lot of the community's 'indy kings' are transformed into different folk in Carolla's presence.

Tons of Maron and Oswalt fanbois love to go on message boards and trash Carolla, but you put Mark Maron, Bill Burr, Kevin Smith, Chris Hardwick. etc. on the mike with Carolla and they turn into regular dudes just enamored with hanging out with him. Its a subtle but perceptible shift.

Regarding your question, he's been married 6 1/2 years with a 3yo kid.

Seems from his standup to be a guy satisfied with that life.

Listened to Patton Oswald on Corrolla today. Corolla seemed to step on Patton's feet early, but the podcast got going. I liked Corollas rant on Demi Moore being the wes welker of hot woman (even though it was wrong) I also loved Corollas hard on for f-4 phantoms. Dennis Haysburts Dong jokes were quite funny.

Yeah. Joe will be going off about something really deep that makes you think and that dumbass will chime in with something completely asinine that immediately lets you know he has NO IDEA what Joe was talking about... just makes me facepalm. Shows you how awesome Joe is, though, as he just calmly explains to him that's NOT AT ALL what he meant. Just blows my mind how those 2 are so different and yet they're such good friends.

First, the reason I came back here was to mention the 'Who Charted' with James Adomian. I usually listen to even the good comedy podcasts and chuckle mentally but not audibly. I'm more of comedy analyzer than an easy laugh, but I have been rolling the entire episode. Wee-wee is coming up with great off the wall questions and Adomian is such a quick wit with such a roster of impersonations.

Also, Maron WENT OFF [IMO] on WTF on a couple of thinly veiled comedy scenes in defense of Jake Johannson when he was on. Ranted for a good five minutes about how some pockets of young comedians are exclusionary and cliquish and not respectful or inclusive enough of the guys who have been around and pioneered the business and are still doing good work. Pretty sure he was referring to the CBB, UCB, NNF contingents in LA. I know a little of the history of Maron being Odenkirk's and Cross' red-headed stepchild around the time they didn't bring him on to Mr. Show.

Pretty repetitive and pretty clearly just a set of miscommunications between an emotional guy and a logical guy, always a potential powderkeg.

You might want to try Mohr stories. It's often just a bunch of funny, but last month there was an episode with Gary Gulman that was one of the most surreal and moving things I've EVER heard. Basically, they're old friends with bouts of passive-aggression in their wilder days, including Gulman tackling Mohr off the stage [whether as a bit or in genuine anger is disputed] at a gig. They started off real silly, almost like a couple giggling girls at a slumber party sharing inside jokes. Then Mohr hits on some resonant questions that recalled Gulman's childhood and suddenly Gulman is literally spilling his guts about pain and disappointments and how it's affected him for life and they morph into this impromptu therapy session with 'love you bro's' abounding. Highly recommended as, as I said, one of the most unique things I've ever heard.

Baby Lee 03-09-2012 10:39 AM

Jay's an interesting guy. He was an insult-everything kind of guy at one point. Now he has these times when he seems like he's almost insecure and gets defensive. He gets into these fits on twitter where he starts getting into petty squabbles with followers and blocking a whole bunch of people, and then not tweeting for 3 weeks.

It can be enjoyable, but right now he has a bit of 'lifelong smoker who finally quit and now complains incessantly of every molecule of cigarette smoke that enters his sphere.'

Since he came out, he's bitching about any and every bit of comedy that makes anyone 'feel bad' like it's some cheap degrading passive-aggressive unenlightened bullying.

Fact is 'we laugh because it hurts.' Everything outside of puns relies to some extent on someone suffering a bit of embarrassment or ridicule, from the most brutal roasting of someone to 'Mary Jane*' jokes where MJ doesn't recognize the sexuality of her situations.

* - "Mary Jane was walking down the street when a man pulled her into a dark alley and started ripping off all her clothes. And Mary Jane laughed and laughed, because she knew her clothes wouldn't fit him."

"Mary Jane was playing on the swings one day, swinging higher and higher. Her mother came out and said, "Mary Jane, don't you swing too high, the boys will see your underwear." And Mary Jane laughed and laughed, because she knew she wasn't wearing any underwear."

Baby Lee 04-28-2012 03:25 PM

If you are in the least interested about Andy Kaufman, Maron's WTF has Bob Zmuda and it is RIVETING.

I am not sure how much of it is real and how much is the continuation of the Kaufman/Zmuda thing. But it's so interesting that I also don't much care.

Mantzoukas co-hosting and Amy Pohler is the guest.

Jim Florentine has out out a pretty good 'cast lately. Fantasy Football is Gay is one of the better episodes. Burr's MMPC is consistently good quality, cant wait to hear him rant about the NFL more. Jay Mohr has really stepped up the number of 'casts that he put out. Jay Mohr with Carl LaBove is damn good.

I gave up on the Ace man. He went from grumpy yet endearing to everybody needs to get their ass kicked and not complain. there's too many Daves in his show, guests don't get enough time, and when the interview does get some steam, he tells Allison to read the news.

Dwight Yeokum on Ace today, good discussion of the seamy side of C&W.

I've gotten to where Allison's non sequiturs are the funniest part of the show. Something about them that are so random that they kill me every time. A couple months back they had a female guest back out and when Carolla mentioned that she wasn't coming in Allison pouted 'awww, I was going to show her my scarf.' Delivered perfectly. I had to shut the pod off for a few seconds to regain composure. Same when she over shares her female/bodily function travails.

LaBove w/Mohr was good, but much of it had already been covered last year on WTF w/Maron.

He broke out a Bronx cop turned standup character on Benson Interruption that was . . . OK, . . I got what he was going for, and occasionally he got there, but there was a shit ton of audience crickets too.

One of those guys with a Bronx accent, who says something outrageous/offensive, then turns on the crowd with stuttering and stammering threats.

I agree with your point on Allison. she's definitely the bright spot on the show. ARIYNBF is worth a listen.

I also agree that the Mohr stories w/ LaBove covered the same stuff as WTF. I preferred the former because it has (Mohr) humor. Maron likes to probe and get into issues, if jokes are told on WTF, that's incidental.

Wife is looking for a catholic podcast. Daily devotional kind of thing. She has a 35 minute commute.

Dr. Bronner is so boring.

I gotta say Jesse Ventura is my favorite character of his. My favorite character of each of the main guests...

James Adomian - Jesse Ventura (followed closely by Huell Howser)
Paul F. Tompkins - Garry Marshall
Andy Daly - Don de Mello (some of his stuff has made me nearly piss myself laughing)
Seth Morris - Bob Ducca
Nick Kroll - Bobby "Bottle Service" Bruscia

PFT won me over forever as Sir Dame Andrew Llyod Webber when he announced his fervent anticipation of 'one of your American hotting dogs.'

I saw CBB live and Adomian rocked da haus as Gary Busey.

Came here to say, you haven't heard a gay-affected voice until you've heard Edgar Oliver on 'The Moth.' If Seth McFarlane did a voice like that for a character on Family Guy, he'd be charged with a hate crime.

I spent half the episode convinced it was some kind of character, but it looks like it's the guy's actual speaking voice.

Got around to Adomian on Sklarboro today. He brought everyone, Busey, Gunn, Houser, Ventura. Plus, Ventura returned late in the episode to talk with 'Mark Wahlberg' [Dan Van Kirk] Hilarious.

The Sklars are guest hosting for Jim Rome today. They're usually funny there.

Yeah, when he says Donnie managers Wahlburger. It cracks me up.

The Bang Cartoon Radio Hour is hilarious!
The Dave Dameshek Football Program is also one of my favorites, love hearing what Shek and Rank have to say along with Hank and the many guests they have one.
The Rich Eisen Podcast is once again a great podcast to listen to. Eisen being the great host he is, along with the amount of guests and football talk integrated into it is a great listen every time.

It's a shame Rich Eisen isn't really on NFL network anymore. That channel has really gone downhill, it's honestly such a bad network now. All they do is re runs of NFL total access and not to mention, NFL AM is so ****ing boring and watered down. I miss how good NFL network used to be, always showing NFL films and other great videos. Now it's just re run after re run after re run, Steve Sabol died a few weeks ago and the network didn't even play a single one of his NFL films episodes. He made that network what it is and they turned it into shit, it's not even really a football channel anymore. It's just always NY jets and fantasy football talk, i hate it. I just listen to First Take podcast or watch it on ESPN 2.

it is a shame Rich eisen isn't on as much as he used to be. The only really interesting thing right now is NFL Total Access and the current NFL films documentary, A Football Life.

First take is awful. Skip Bayless is all that is wrong with Sports Talk.

It's better then anything on NFL network. They actually get into heated debates an talk about stuff a lot that other shows don't cause they're scared too. I admit Stephen A Smith gets to be a bit much and Skip needs to chill out on the Tebow but a lot of the time, Skip is right. I think it's a good podcast and show

blaise 10-15-2012 07:54 AM

Skip and Stephen A are unwatchable.
