Thats killer, i had no idea gars got that big until i watched a show called River Monsters & the host caught one like those on a river in Texas.

We have them in the rivers here in Illinois, they used to show up on my families trot lines all the time, but they dont get nearly that big from what i've seen. Imagine you're lazing around in a river & one of these mistakes your milky white foot for a fish... one of those could easily drown a man IMO.

Those are alligator gar. Supposedly they don’t move north of Oklahoma but I’ve seen them in Grand Lake, which is partially fed by the Neosho so I don’t see how they’re not in Kansas also.
Mostly we have short and long nose gar which don’t get as big as the alligator gar but I have seen long nose gar up to 5’ long so they can get pretty damn big themselves.

I may actually get a little fishing in this weekend.
I’m headed out to a friends land to help cut some trails and clear brush for a camping area on the back-side of his second pond. Which is also an excuse to break out the Corveep. ;) I’m taking my son and dog so it should be entertaining at least.

when i was a kid i rode my bike down to the high water bridge just to pass the time. I seen a fish big as a man swim up stream and then disappear when it got to the deep channel. Ive never ever been spooked by anything in the water but that thing gave me abit of the heebeejeebeez.

No one really knows how big the fish in our waters get because we’re limited to what we can catch on rod and reel, no netting allowed.
Maybe if we could net up fish like they do on the Mekong river we might find a +600 lb monster lurking the deep.

Bull Shoals Lake
 

Has anyone ever fished the Bull Shoals Lake? It's located on the Southern MO and Northern AR border. Grandpa, dad, and brothers are doing a fishing get away there the third week of May. I've never been there.

I've been told that the water is very clear. Has anyone fished it or have any advice or hints?

I fish below Bull Shoals Dam in the tailwaters for trout pretty regularly. I don't know shit about the lake, other than it's huge.

Have you ever hooked into one of those giant brownies? Whenever I hear Arkansas and fishing, I think about giant White River brown trout.

My biggest was actually on the Little Read, and it was around 26". Not a giant by our standards, but still a very big fish.

That's plenty huge to me. I normally fish tiny mountain streams, so I'm used to 10 inch brookies and rainbows. My biggest ever is a 16 inch rainbow. I've never had the joy of trying to net a giant on a tiny 7x or so tippet.

Big and nasty

The first Guys Weekend in several years that I skip and this is what they came up with.
The big one is a 35# blue with several smaller blues and channels on the stringer. They were caught jugging Sweet Water Cove at Grand Lake, OK and from what I was told they were all very, very tasty.

And delicious.

Any seasoned fly fishermen have any tips or tricks to share for a beginner?

Spend the money on a good fly line. Hire a guide for a trip somewhere and sponge up everything he can teach you. If you have any specific questions about flies, techniques, or anything of that nature I'll be happy to help.

So the Scientific Anglers Mastery Series fly line that comes with it is garbage? I bought the 8'6" in a 5 weight. What line would you recommend?

No. SA Mastery is an acceptable line. In all honesty, I didn't look at the kit breakdown. Most kits come with a garbage line made for that company.

I'll just second what the others have said. If you're just starting out flycasting, it's not hard to do at all, but it's not something that can be learned by watching someone else unless that person is also telling you what he's doing and when and why.

With someone teaching you, it's very easy to pick up.

Has anyone ever fished Shawnee Mission Lake or Heritage for trout? I guess they stocked 4,000 lbs of trout in each one earlier in the month. I may go give it a try tomorrow morning. Any spots would be much appreciated.

Anyone had any luck? I've been out 3 or 4 times and not much happening for me so far. Caught this little guy while trying to catch crappie. Sadly he's the first, biggest and best of the year so far.

My old man and I haven't gotten the boat out on the water yet due to problems with the tow vehicle, so we've done a bit of fishing at James A Reed.

Last week I went twice and caught two bass, this week I've went twice and caught ten. It feels good to be catching them instead of getting skunked, but I think all told, the twelve have weighed ten pounds.

One caught on a jig, one on a spinnerbait, and the rest on plastic worms.

Not really but I’ve had a couple of friends tell me they started getting into Crappie on farm ponds so I’m going to a friends land tomorrow with some minnows to give it a try.

I'm headed out there Sat. morning with my father in law. Which pond are you catching them on if you don't mind my asking? I've always had the most luck on Jack Rabbit.

White bass, hybrids, and stripers are running right now, and I haven't been out to chase them.

How’s the water temp there? It was only 58 here last weekend but we’re supposed to get a couple days of sunshine so I’m hoping it will improve.

Walleye slow on Table Rock last weekend. Spent four days fishing Holiday Island area. I caught a 4#2oz My buddy caught a 9#6oz. Made the trip to see him catch that.

That's a nice sized walleye. We're finally starting to get a decent walleye population here. I've fished for them up in the boundary waters, and I enjoy eating them... but I've never really fished for them down here. We basically just trolled for them in the boundary waters. Great way to drink beer and fish... but not real exciting either.

Half on Jack Rabbit, three on Catclaw and two on Plover.

Anyone know where you can buy live bait in South KC/Johnson County area?

If you're talking about worms, Wal-Mart will have some, as well as most Casey's gas stations near lakes. As for minnows, the only place I can think of would be Longview/Jacomo/Blue Springs marinas. I don't know if that's too much of a travel for you.

I catfish on the Missouri about twice a week during the summer and nothing beats cut shad, or a live blue gill cut the tail off and let her fly

i have fished every couple day ponds around here for bass crappie nothing so far,

nice stringer of crappie from this weekend from smithville. Son and I had to do some major combat fishing to get to this cove, but it paid off.

Nice. I've been wanting to go do some crappie fishing, but haven't had time. We are, however, going to Port Aransas for some deep sea fishing this weekend while we still have the opportunity to do so. I'll add the pics when we get back.

Took out the new boat last evening for a little walleye fishing. We caught two nice 21" right away, then never had another bite. I say we, but sadly it was the wife that caught both of them.

Boog Jr has slamed lots of slab crappie this spring .. Im still trying to catch a record channel-cat .. So far nothing over 10 pounds .... My neighbor caught a flathead-cat on a rod & reel that went 42 pounds out of the river sunday .....

I don't know if anyone can eat 42 pounds of catfish, but I would like to try

Out of a 40 lb flathead you're going to get, maybe, 10 lbs worth of fish meat. That's why it's just not worth it to me to keep one under 20 lbs.

There's nothing better than going fishing with little to no expectations and hitting the mother load. This weekend I had a trip to the inlaws for Mothers Day. I was pretty excited because my wife's uncle was going to take us out in his boat to fish Mark Twain Lake. Once I got there I was told the trip was canceled.

They have a pond behind their house that belongs to a neighbor. For the 12 years I've been going there I have always wondered if there were fish in it. I decided to find out. The pond is shallow and muddy and doesn't look like much on the eyeball test.

Here are the results I got on camera. My phone died on Sunday but I added another 4-5.lber that day.

Took my boys out to drown some worms over the weekend while visiting the mother-in-law. We caught a couple of bass and a few panfish.

We have been catching our limit in white bass for the last few weeks. Father in law gets to fish much more than I do but he has caught three 7lb hybrids and a 9lb. Walleye were biting great last week. Going to hit it on Wed this week.

Just got back from Port Aransas and caught about 12 vermillion snapper, a triggerfish, and a 17 lb. ling. It was my first time catching any of these fish.

This year my birthday happened to land on Mother's Day, so my brother and I got together with my mom to celebrate. On her property is a nice sized pond, and we've fished it a handful of times with great success. We've caught a few three pound bass, a few four pound catfish and a ton of one/two pound bass and big bluegill.

I like to go out there and work on finesse techniques (because almost anything works), while my brother uses the old hook, worm and bobber. I've outfished him all day, but I hit a stretch where I wasn't getting any bites and he was pulling in fish every other cast. He's turned around to tell me to switch to live bait when his bobber gets pulled under like the barrels in Jaws. I hear his line tightening, he loosens his drag, and up comes this monster:

Didn't have a scale on me, but the length and girth estimate to be 7.4 pounds +/- an ounce.

Caught my first bass of the year on Saturday.

Purple and orange magnum bass-stopper. Probably a 3.5 lber.

Pretty fish. Even gave it a kiss.

Leaving for a week long trip to Canada on Friday. It's a little tough to concentrate right now...

We just got back from Bull Shoals Lake. We got into some smallmouth bass. I had never fished for them before but now I am hooked. (No pun intended) Those bastards really fight. Good times.:)
