Wait... Hmmm... Ehhh... Yep... I just came.

Iron Man whooping Thor's ass and the Hulk saving him were both jizz-worthy scenes. I still wonder why they have shots of Thor, Cap, and Iron Man fighting though. Maybe they're sparring or something. Fighting for leadership? I'm excited. CAN'T WAIT!

EDIT: I'm still annoyed they have Scarlet and Renner in this though. I understand Hawkeye was a member of the original avengers, but so was Ant-Man and I don't see him in here. Just leave those two out of it. What can a guy with a bow and arrow and a girl with a ****ing gun do when you have the Hulk, Iron Man and Thor?!? If they have any more than like 3 minutes of screen time (barring Scarlet showing her tits) I'll be supremely annoyed.

Well he might be in it, but they haven't shown him from what I've seen... Before I get checked by a comic nerd, I'd like to say that I don't actually know if Hawkeye or Ant-Man were original Avengers. I think Ant-Man is Hank Pym and his girlfriend is Wasp; and I also believe they were both original Avengers, but I'm just talking out of my ass. I have no clue.

Latest trailer looks so sweet. So who are the aliens that Loki is working with?

keg in kc 03-01-2012 09:18 AM

Conjecture is that they're Skrulls that are called something else because the studio doesn't have the license to use the name "skrull" (that was part of the Fantastic Four license apparently).

I do.

The Avengers Won’t Battle Skrulls or Kree, Joss Whedon Says

Captain America and his superhero team won’t be squaring off against the Skrulls or the Kree in The Avengers, said director Joss Whedon, ending months of fanboy speculation about the identity of Loki’s evil minions in the upcoming flick.

“I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls,” he said Saturday after cracking a joke about Vulcans during his talk at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

“Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories,” Whedon said, as reported by EW.com. “They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars.”

Thor’s magical brother Loki is the movie’s main villain, but the character alludes to having an army at his beck and call in the most recent Avengers trailer (above), fueling speculation about who he might be commanding. Whedon said he didn’t want people to be disappointed in theaters if they showed up expecting some of Marvel Comics’ more well-known alien baddies.

“The Skrulls — they can shape change,” he said. “That’s a whole thing I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow — it’s a real juggling act.”

Bowser 03-11-2012 12:46 AM

It was mentioned somewhere that the baddies may be the Badoon.

Ok .. here is my guess on the alien army... I am guessing they are genetically altered Korbinites (whose homeworld was wiped out by Surtur so they are looking for a new home) AND at some point towards the end... we will get a hint leading to Beta Ray Bill who will show up in Thor 2! That would be a really badass idea.

The Franchise 04-02-2012 01:02 PM

http://www.fandango.com/movieblog/av...er-712406.html

Quote:

If you're a fan of superhero comic-book movies, then this is your dream come true. This is the type of film you fantasized about growing up – the ultimate superhero mash-up, but in live action, on the biggest movie screens in the world. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Incredible Hulk all in the same movie together for the first time after each one launched their own successful franchise. And that movie is being directed by one of Hollywood's nerdiest writer-directors, Joss Whedon, a true comic book geek who understands the intricacies of these superhero worlds like no other.

This is The Avengers, arguably the biggest film of 2012, and the most important one of the decade for Marvel and perhaps even Disney, as it signifies the culmination of a master plan that's been taking shape for years – one that could potentially launch a new, massive franchise, the likes of which we've never seen before.

Fandango was among the lucky few who were able to travel to the set of The Avengers last August in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where we braved scorching-hot conditions to watch our favorite superheroes battle aliens on a giant set inside an old rail yard converted to look like a New York City street outside Grand Central Station. We watched Iron Man and Captain America film a scene overflowing with anger-induced intensity, and sat down for some of the longest, most in-depth conversations with an ensemble cast we've ever experienced while on a movie set.

So after chatting it up with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Scarlett Johannson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Joss Whedon and Marvel's chief geek Kevin Feige, here are 10 awesome things we learned about Marvel's biggest movie ever …

1. Each Character Has Their Own Story – There's a reason this sort of thing hasn't been attempted yet, and it's because it's extremely difficult to navigate a story that has to be edge-of-your-seat exciting, but at the same time makes you care about each one of these characters and their struggles. One of the most impressive aspects of The Avengers is that Joss Whedon somehow managed to get each hero their time in the spotlight.

Mark Ruffalo, playing Hulk for the first time (Bill Bixby, Ed Norton and Eric Bana have all portrayed the character onscreen), admitted he was hesitant to be involved because he didn't want to just do nothing. "That was my worry – I said Joss, don't put me in there if I'm just going to be standing around," Ruffalo told us. "He's like, ‘No, no, no, don't worry – everyone's gonna have their voice, and their sort of own little character arc' – and he's really come through on that."

2. Don't Expect Much Romance – While each solo Marvel film has incorporated a romantic element between our superhero and his leading lady, the heroes don't have much time for that in this film because the stakes are ridiculously high. Scarlett Johansson, whose Black Widow spends a good amount of time alongside Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, joked, "There's no time for romance. We have s**t to avenge!"

3. Consider This The Avengers: Part 1 – According to Marvel chief Kevin Feige, this is only the beginning of a brand-new franchise, and not the end of a multi-film story arc. "Everyone gets an introduction into this movie as if they've never been in any other movie before,"Feige told us. "That is the way the movie is... This is a "Part 1." This has been a rallying cry and one of the reasons we wanted Joss to come on-board is because he understood the characters. And frankly, he was not interested in doing a half-"Iron Man 3," half-"Thor 2," half-"Captain America 2," half-"Hulk Whatever." He was interested in doing "The Avengers: Part 1." So from the very first frame of the movie, this is "Avengers: Part 1," and all of the characters are introduced to the audience as if you've never seen them before."

4. The Avengers Have a Sweet Ride – You can't round up all these superheroes together and then ask them to bring their own vehicles. Nope, for The Avengers they're riding in style onboard the massive Helicarrier, which operates as an aircraft carrier that can fly. The large, intimidating Helicarrier bridge was built on a soundstage in Albuquerque, and at its busiest the bridge housed 75 extras, all members of the secret organization SHIELD, lead by Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson. The team also flies around in the famous Quinjet, which they use to travel between the Helicarrier and the action.

Other sets built on soundstages include various parts of the Helicarrier, a laboratory, and Tony Stark's beautiful New York City apartment (with wrap-around balcony complete with its own landing pad), set atop Stark Tower, which you may know as the MetLife Building. When not in New Mexico, The Avengers filmed on location in Wilmington, Ohio, New York City, Worthington, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio.

5. The Action is Big and Then Really Big – From fights amongst the heroes themselves (one of the earliest action sequences involves Iron Man, Captain America and Thor all confronting each other for the first time … and they don't exactly shake hands) to large, expansive battles on the streets of New York City, this flick will definitely give you plenty of the good stuff.

We watched one scene featuring Hawkeye fighting alien invaders on the streets of New York City that involved the hero ferociously firing his bow-and-arrow at attacking aliens – spinning in all sorts of directions, as he'd fire an arrow then retrieve it from stuck inside the body of one alien, and in one swift motion he'd spin and stick the same arrow inside the neck of another alien. Badass!

6. There's Also Plenty of Smaller Moments Too – The big, explosive stuff may help sell those trailers, but if you ask director Joss Whedon it's the smaller character moments in this film that really take it to another level. "The action is not small and some of the gags we've come up with are enormous and delightful and I'm proud of them and excited by them, because I like to live in that world too, but when you are in those quieter moments, that's just when I am just in heaven."

7. They May Look Cool, but Those Superhero Suits Aren't Very Comfortable: Thor may be packing enough badass armor to defeat an army of enemies, but he pays the price when it comes to comfort. Same goes for Scarlett Johansson, who admits that even she struggles in her tight black get-up. "We all have our various things that we have to do to get comfortable," Johansson confessed. "Everybody looks incredibly uncomfortable until the cameras are rolling and then we all look badass. Then "Cut!" and we're all like "Aarrrgh… God, this thing, get it off me, it's awful!!"

8. They're Replicating the Comic Book Experience on the Big Screen: While Joss Whedon and his team of superheroes have crafted an all new story for The Avengers, the film still has ties to the comics in that Loki was the villain in the first-ever issue of The Avengers comic book. Beyond that, Marvel's Kevin Feige further explained the true nature of their grand master plan, which, with The Avengers due in theaters next month, now includes solo superhero movies and ensemble superhero movies. "We're looking to replicate that experience that a comic reader had, who loved reading his "Thor" issues and loved reading his "Cap" issues and loved reading his "Iron Man" issues," Feige said. "And they always had their favorites and would argue about who's better and who would win in a fight and occasionally they would get together for an uber-event and then after that uber-event would go back into their own comic stories."

9. You've Never Seen This Version of The Incredible Hulk – For the first time ever, the version of The Incredible Hulk seen in The Avengers was created through motion capture technology, adding a certain amount of realism that hasn't been present in the two recent live-action Hulk movies. "The only distinction that I hold is that I am the only actor to ever play Bruce Banner and the Hulk," Mark Ruffalo told us.

Aside from that, Ruffalo's Hulk is a little less miserable than some of these other versions, attempting to model his Bruce Banner after Bill Bixby's original version from the television show of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. "They wanted him to be thin, but still within Bill Bixby's everyman Hulk," Ruffalo noted. "I think Banner's aging and living with this thing since – now it's been two years since his last "one." We're kind of going for this world weariness of accepting – trying to get to the point where he can live with it, and maybe master it. Come to peace with it. And so there's this kind of nice ironic-wryness Banner. He's not sulking and miserable."

10. "Don't Act Surprised at How Unpredictable It Is" – It's arguably the most ambitious comic book film of all time, and if there's one thing we took away from our experience on set it was that no one involved in this production was taking that fact for granted. As Robert Downey Jr. pointed out, everyone is well aware of how big this movie is and they've all brought their A-game. "Here's what I think it's about. I remember at Comic-Con a season or two ago, there was all this promise of … this is hugely ambitious," Downey Jr. said. "DC has tried to do this before and Marvel kinda said we're going to do it and formulated a way to do it correctly, which is where J-Dub [Joss Whedon] came in heavily. What it is, it's just a really good story that could've been done a hundred ways wrong and don't act surprised at how unpredictable it is."

Tom Hiddleston added, "Somehow Joss has managed to reintroduce characters that we all love, make them seem fresh, make them seem new, and then having them all together without weighting any particular character more than the other. It was really … as just a feat of writing I was so impressed. If they keep Joss on board for another one…I think, yeah, let's hope there are more."

The Avengers hits theaters on May 4th. Stay tuned all this month as we'll be bringing you complete interviews with most of the cast.

More random speculation as to the aliens...

OK, this is a total guess, but it seems like a plausible scenario...

Loki falls from grace (already happened) and finds the Korbinites also wandering the 9 realms. Their homeworld has been destroyed (by Surtur) but Loki tricks them into believing that it was in fact humans of Midgard(Earth) who have destroyed their world. He then uses the power cosmic to mutate a select group of them and create his army. At some point, at least one of them realizes they have been tricked and switches sides... giving us Beta Ray Bill.

Basically what I said before... but a little more detailed. If this isn't what they did, they should have!

One thing I don't like but I'm not 100% sure of yet....looks like this thing wasn't shot wide and in scope 2:35 to 1 ? Kind of strange to me? I know Whedon is from tv but he shot the Firefly movie wide.

Joss Whedon on Assembling ‘The Avengers’
By DAVE ITZKOFF
Zade Rosenthal/Walt Disney Pictures The director Joss Whedon on the set of “The Avengers.”

As you may have gleaned from his fantasy TV shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” or his work on comic books like Astonishing X-Men, Buffy and Fray, the director and screenwriter Joss Whedon is a comic-book guy through and through. That might make him the ideal filmmaker for a project like “The Avengers,” the Marvel Studios movie (opening May 4) that brings together Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and many others.
Zade Rosenthal/Walt Disney Pictures Mr. Whedon with Samuel L. Jackson on “The Avengers.”

A profile of Mr. Whedon in this weekend’s Arts & Leisure section looks at him in a season that will see the near-simultaneous release of “The Avengers,” the biggest movie he’s ever made, and “The Cabin in the Woods,” a multi-leveled horror film he wrote with its director, Drew Goddard, and may be more emblematic of his ability to work on smaller scales with smaller budgets. In this first part of an excerpt from that interview, Mr. Whedon talks about how he was recruited to “The Avengers” and the challenges he faced making it.
Q.

Growing up, were you always a Marvel Comics guy?
A.

Everybody’s bi-publishing-curious. I tried a little DC. I dabbled in college, it’s a phase. But yeah, I’m a Marvel guy, first and last.
Q.

Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studios president, had told me you essentially won the “Avengers” assignment with a single e-mail
.
A.

They – they being Marvel, and most they being Kevin – know exactly what they need, so they really do let you make the decisions. And there was only one point of conflict, in terms of what they needed.
Q.

What was that?

A.

It’s about the villains. I kept trying to add one. And they weren’t behind it. I feel like we made it work but that was the only thing we disagreed on.
Q.

And that character was –?

A.

[teasingly] A specific figure. I wanted to have another guy in the mix, somebody who was up to their level, because I have all these strong guys! That was trouble. They felt the structure worked without it and it would be too much. But apart from that, everything they wanted, I completely agreed with. It’s like, “We want the Avengers not to settle their differences through talk.” O.K., good. I’m for that, too. It’s a superhero movie. Superheroics must take place.
Q.

Marvel had previously approached you on other film projects. What happened in those cases?

A.

I was interested in “Iron Man” when it was at New Line and then one day I thought, Do I really want to be in development on a movie? And I just backed out. Honestly, I think Jon [Favreau] did a better job than I would have. And you can tell the DNA of “The Avengers” – no paternity test needed, “Iron Man” is the daddy. “Iron Man” is where our reality comes from, even when it becomes fantastical.
Q.

How did you pitch “Avengers” to them in that e-mail?
A.

I was like, I don’t know if I want to make an “Avengers” movie, so I’ll give you some ideas about where I think you might go with it. If it’s about the origin of a team that doesn’t make sense together, and they really don’t, then you have to use the “Dirty Dozen” model, which is an hour and 40 minutes of training and 20 minutes of Nazi-killing. So I laid out my ideas, the biggest one being, I think it’s a war movie. That’s the only way you can make these people feel like they might lose. You can’t just create six exact matches but slightly bigger, six Abominations – you can’t do that. What you can do is put them through so much that you get that feeling of, I don’t know what’s going to happen to them – they might not all come back from this. And I felt it even more strongly when I watched “Black Hawk Down.” I was like, O.K., that’s the movie I want to make. My first memo was 3 or 4 pages, and from that, they started to get excited about what I was saying and I started to get excited about what I was saying. I was like, Oh, this actually sounds fun. These people are broken. I can write about these people. They’re tortured and strange.
Q.

Are those fundamental features your characters have to possess?
A.

Yeah. I’m the guy who hated “Emma” the first time he read it, because I didn’t get the idea of having someone who has everything and needs to be torn down. I was like, But I don’t like her! And it took a while to realize, oh, that was the intent. For me, I had a harder time writing “Angel” than I did writing “Buffy” because he looked like a stalwart, manly hero, and even though he was a massively messed-up fella, it was hard for me to figure out the structure of the show. You need that in, you need the weakness. Somebody wrote, early on, on the Internet, “I can’t believe they hired Joss Whedon. This should be a Dean Martin, Rat Pack-y movie with lots of testosterone. Joss Whedon’s just going to have them all cry and talk about their feelings.” And I was like, You know what, buddy? You’re probably right. I probably am. And they kind of do.
Q.

On some level, you just want to see famous actors playing these characters you’ve so dearly for so long.

A.

You want to see Captain America and Tony Stark not like each other, articulately. Writing them was where I started. They represent two polar opposites and I’m basically Tony and I wish I was Steve [Rogers, Cap's alter ego]. I believe everything that Steve says, but at the end of the day, I’m more like Tony, without the brilliance and the billions.
Q.

And you can live with having all the plot points of the previous Marvel movies dictated to you when you walk in the door?
A.

Yeah, sure. And where all the other sequels are going to go. There was talk about, should we have this character? I’m like, you need to save that character for that other sequel. You can’t just throw that moment away. One of the biggest struggles for me was the end of “Iron Man 2″: “I’m in a semi-stable relationship.” “We approve of Iron Man but not Tony Stark.” They really made my job hard, in that respect. But you get all these pieces and it’s a puzzle. But it’s a puzzle that comes together. It’s not just a bunch of broken stuff — there is a way that it’s supposed to fit. And when it does, you find you’re being given as many gifts as you are problems.
Q.

Were there story problems you were still playing with once filming was underway?
A.

I make it sound like I’m Mycroft Holmes and boom, there you go. I’m not. I got it wrong, several times. I only had the structure dialed in a little bit before shooting and was still writing a few key scenes while shooting.
Q.

What would be an example of something you didn’t figure out until later in the process?
A.

One of the best scenes that I wrote was the beautiful and poignant scene between Steve and Peggy [Carter] that takes place in the present. And I was the one who was like, Guys, we need to lose this. It was killing the rhythm of the thing. And we did have a lot of Cap, because he really was the in for me. I really do feel a sense of loss about what’s happening in our culture, loss of the idea of community, loss of health care and welfare and all sorts of things. I was spending a lot of time having him say it, and then I cut that.
Q.

Even though you have directing experience, when you come to a film with stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson, not to mention all the guys who the Marvel movies have turned into stars, is there a learning curve involved?
A.

The biggest star in the world, if they’re still an actor, they want a director. And all of these stars are actors. They want to know that you know what you’re doing. Because no matter how much control they have over their part – and I collaborated with them intensely, as much as any of them wanted to – they know it’s your movie. And Robert is extremely hands-on. One of the first things he said is, “I will never mess with your intent. I will question every day how you plan to get there. But I will never mess with what you’re trying to accomplish.” We had to sniff each other out. Because I’m used to having people do everything I say, and so is he. [laughs] What we found was, one of my favorite collaborations that I’ve ever had.
Q.

You’re known for the strong female protagonists in your TV shows. Did you have an influence on making Black Widow a more prominent character in “The Avengers”?

A.

Absolutely. There was at one point a question of, should the Black Widow be an Avenger? I was like, Guys, they’re called fanboys. Yes she should. I am inevitably going to give her a decent amount of juice. Widow is really the man on the street. So you’re going to spend more time just to find that person. And you’re going to spend more time with her because she is the only female on the team and for me, one of the most interesting characters.
Q.

Are you concerned about the growing fatigue with summer event movies, and how that could affect the reception for “The Avengers”?
A.

I’m one of those guys who will be as crabby as anyone: They’re only trying to make franchise movies, where are the prestige pics? Where are the ’70s, where are people taking chances? While I’m making a giant, tentpole, franchise, action summer movie. [mock defensiveness] That doesn’t make me a hypocrite – it just gives me layers. [fake weak laugh] There’s a weird kind of cultural obsession with instant gratification that has entered our business model. Nobody’s interested in making a living – they only want to make a fortune. With the amount of money we made “Avengers” for, you could make a lot more movies. Now, in Marvel’s case, these are movies that I think deserve to be bigger than life. And “The Avengers” being the culmination of this grand plan that has had no less than five movies leading up to it, deserves to be as big as it is. I feel like you have to deliver scale in this movie. Hopefully, they got the right guy to do it or I’m in big trouble.
Q.

It’s not just that the films are so big, but that their vocabulary has become so similar. There are elements of “The Avengers” – alien invasion force; mysterious artifact – that we’ve just seen in other movies that haven’t fared very well.
A.

Believe me, there are tropes in this movie that will appear as nothing else. I referred to the Tesseract more than a few times as “the MacGufferact.” The invasion at the end, that was stipulated. And all I could think was, Great, I know where I’m going. My whole thing was, make sure that none of this feels like a checkmark. But more than once, we watched the trailer for some movie and went, “Oh, are their aliens better than ours? Are they too similar?” Panic, panic, panic. At the end of the day, it’s like, Was there a story about human beings threaded through all of that? The superhero team movie is going to have a certain structure, but no cars turn into anything else except piles of rubble. Cars magically transform into burning cars. That part I’m happy about.

Cast of THE AVENGERS Shooting Another Scene

Update: According to our Jeff Otto on the ground at "The Avengers" press conference Mark Ruffalo has also confirmed they are shooting an extra scene. "We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, 'Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.' " Ruffalo said. We asked if it will be in the "The Avengers" when it hits theaters Ruffalo added, "Yeah. So I’m like, 'All right, when are we doing that?' Today after we’re done.”

"The Avengers" is locked in for a May 4th release, and it's tracking to open pretty much as big as you'd expect, in the realm of $120 million-plus. The film premiered to a Los Angeles audience last night, and while many shared "oohs" and "aahs," it looks like they might not be getting the final picture.

During today's "The Avengers" post-screening press conference, Robert Downey Jr. claimed that the cast and crew were due to shoot another remaining scene that very night. When the crowd laughed and Marvel head Kevin Feige notably winced, Downey replied, "I'm not kidding," and in typical Downey fashion ordered, "No more questions!" The cast then exited, leaving a sea of press buzzing.

It's not uncommon for Marvel to wait until the last minute to wrap these films and withhold snippets from certain audiences -- most critics never got to see the post-credits stingers on a few of their releases thus far. And "Captain America: The First Avenger" was two months from release when Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson descended upon New York City to film the climax. Given that the film is so close to release, this would have to be a very small bit of footage, possibly another post-credits sequence that Marvel did not want to reveal to journalists. Could it involve a tease for the brewing "Captain America" sequel? Is it possibly the top-secret death scene we're all expecting? Will it be true to Marvel traditions and involve Hostess Cakes in any way, shape or form? True Believers will find out when "The Avengers" hits theaters on May 4th. -- reporting by Jeff Otto
