I'm liking 203+. :)

But it's pretty hard to judge one lap practice speeds at a plate track, what with the draft and all. That said, if you look down that list a little, you'll find Kenseth with the highest average speed. I think that indicates some strength.

New Paved Track: Bud Shootout promises to deliver

By almost all accounts, this will be one wild show. It's the first time the Sprint Cup drivers will compete on the silky smooth new pavement at Daytona International Speedway under actual race conditions.

Will new mean better? Well, that depends on what you consider better. If it's unpredictable, chaotic and dangerous, then yes, it's better.

"The Shootout is going to be crazy," Jeff Burton said. "It's going to be nuts. It's going to be wide-open every lap, every time."

Tony Stewart on the new surface at Daytona: "You literally could hold a full cup of coffee with the lid off and not spill a drop riding around."

"The track is so smooth and has so much grip that there's no telling what people will try," Carl Edwards said. "I'm not going to say you'll have more wrecks, but the possibility to have more is out there."

Daytona is narrower than Talladega with tighter turns, which means the cars need to handle well to race up front. But handling becomes less of an issue with the smoother surface, enabling the drivers to flat-foot it all the way around the 2.5-mile tri-oval.

"We're not sliding around here now," Kurt Busch said. "It's very controllable. It's very similar to Talladega when that track had its repave. But Daytona is only three lanes of traffic, where Talladega is six lanes of traffic."

The problem is that more grip means drivers will take more chances and try to make Daytona four lanes or five lanes wide at times.

And the smoother surface will lead to tighter packs without much separation, an inherently dangerous situation when cars are inches apart at 200 mph.

"My opinion is it will probably increase the chances of wrecking," said Jamie McMurray, the 2010 Daytona 500 winner. "When you run really close together, it increases that possibility.

"What fans don't see in the plate races is that we [almost] wreck about every lap. Something happens every lap that makes you flinch. It makes you think 'I need to take a breath.'"

Tony Stewart thinks drivers will have fewer of those breathtaking moments because the cars are easier to drive on the new pavement.

"The transitions off of Turns 2 and 4 are a little more abrupt than what we have at Talladega," Stewart said. "But as far as the ride, you literally could hold a full cup of coffee with the lid off and not spill a drop riding around."

Only 24 cars in the race won't show all the things fans will see with 43 cars on the track next weekend in the Daytona 500. But drivers will take more chances and experiment in the Shootout to find out what works and what doesn't on the new pavement.

With a purse of more than $1 million on the line, including more than $200,000 for the winner, it's go time without the normal points consequences that can come from risky moves.

A smoother surface should bring the field together, meaning anyone can win.

"This asphalt is the great equalizer," Kurt Busch said. "That's going to make for a wild start to things."

No one knows for sure what will happen Saturday night. That alone makes it worth watching.

Ford asks NASCAR to approve Mustang for 2013

"The push remains, though, for manufacturers to have a race car with a strong resemblance to vehicles sold to consumers. Allison said the response was overwhelming last season when the Mustang ran in four second-tier Nationwide Series events as a precursor to its full-time use in that series this year."

"It certainly exceeded all expectations," Allison said. "We knew Mustang's affinity from fans, but we did not anticipate the fans who don't follow NASCAR getting so excited. There is a whole cottage industry of Mustang enthusiasts, a group that typically does not follow NASCAR. But when the car was introduced in NASCAR, it started garnering attention.

How the **** did Bobby Labonte have the 4th fastest lap? He's my boy has been for over 10 years, but he's just been a shell of his former self the last handful of years.

Hopefully his new team has the equipment to be competitive.

In other news: Nine cars topped 200 mph, with Joey Logano and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch topping the charts in a two-car breakaway with speeds of 203.087 mph and 203.082 mph.

The speeds had some drivers wondering whether NASCAR would shrink the size of the restrictor plate hole to slow cars as it did after speeds approached 200 mph in the December tire test.

NASCAR officials said they would continue to monitor speeds during Saturday's practice that will include all 49 cars entered in the Feb. 20 Daytona 500.

"I don't know what NASCAR is going to do," said Dale Earnhardt Jr., who led the first practice with a speed of 199.862 mph. "I bet if they put a smaller plate on it we'd still be able to do it with the two-car lockup. The plates, when you're talking about 64ths and 32nds [of an inch], I don't know if the plate can get us out of those speeds with a two-car lockup.

Talladega since it was repaved a few years ago has never been a factor at Daytona. But with the new surface most drivers expect it to be a major factor in the Shootout and 500.
For years, the question has been about whether racing is safe at Daytona and Talladega. No one enjoys watching the car go airborne. Honestly, I don't know how Brian France the drunk, could live with himself if the car ends up in the grandstands and kills 20 people.

We have had wrecks like this ever since the plate -- Drivers run so close together that one mistake can cause a chain reaction and take out half the field. We're lucky to be able to see drivers and cars crossing the finish line intact.

It's a blast to watch. ... #Brian France, the drunk

TONY MOTHER****ING STEWART!!!!

(since he usually wins the races at Daytona that don't matter)

kstater 02-12-2011 06:54 PM

I wouldn't pick a Toyota. Getting hot sooner than others when 2 cars get lined up.

GoHuge 02-12-2011 06:56 PM

I think the championship will obviously be between the 48, 29, 11, 99 but I think (as much as it pains me to say) the 24 team will be back as a serious contender. Obviously the entire field is much more competitive than it was when Petty, Earnhardt, Yarborough, Pearson, DW, and Jeff Gordon were racking up wins. Back then 8-10 drivers could realistically win every weekend. Now it's at least 18-22. The only guy that continues to win at the historic pace as the previous HOF (or will be) drivers is Jimmie Johnson. JFC 5 championships and in that span I think he has won a minimum of 6 races each year......just ridiculous. The best Gordon has done in his career was when he had Ray Evernham. Who do people most compare Evernham to? Alan Gustafson. I don't think anyone disputes that Chad Knaus is the best crew chief in the garage. Just saying the way they think and run a team people say they are almost clones. That 5/25/88 shop has always seemed like the step child at Hendrick, but Gutafson has won with every driver he's crew chiefed for. Kyle Busch, Mark Martin, and even Casey Mears. Gordon is in very good hands.

I think Junior finally gets his shit together as well. Don't think he'll be a championship contender, but think he'll win a race or two and make The Chase. Being in the 48 shop sure as hell won't hurt. Actually I think he or Harvick will win tonight or one of it not both the duels.

Sfeihc 02-12-2011 06:57 PM

Kenseth
