No Tom Scholz (Boston), played the 12 string as good as anybody on 6.? He played every instrument before their 1st LP.
Also I remember years ago when Ace Frehley was touted as one of the best to ever play & he's not even @ the bottom. I know he influenced Dimebag & several others. Wow. just. wow. This list is ****ed up. |

I know. Nashville is crawling with dudes who could smoke most of these guys. FAX |
Nzoner Joe Bonamassa
Wow never heard him , good stuff thanx |

A friend introduced me to his music about 6 years ago.He's incredible,in fact he recently released a 2 disc DVD set live from Royal Albert Hall.Here's a couple from that set. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YBgNuP86BNk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> And jamming with Clapton <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VEEfDdJyxPY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I hate these, because they are subjective, but L. Buckingham is betthan half of those above him.
finger picking is pure talent. |
I'm not even a country fan (although I was certainly exposed to it when I was younger), but Roy Clark could out play a vast majority of those listed (and then play fiddle, banjo, mandolin and steel guitar over their corpses).
|
Whatever......Marc Ford not on this list is a travesty. Period.
|
I think this is a great list of songwriters. Leave the top 100 guitarist list to magazines like Guitar World. I'm not even a fan but there's no way Satch/Malmsteen/Vai is less of a guitar player than Johnny Ramone. And I LOVE the Ramones.

Rolling Stone again proves why it sucks. Rolling Stone is a joke and always has been. |
No Frank Black

No Steve Howe

I am surprised they didn't put Donna Summer and Boy George as the top 2 best guitarist. |

I will give props on Billy Gibbons making the list though, although I'd have put him in the top 20 :D

Many times, too much is made of the popularity of the band in regards to how good someone is. Kurt Cobain isn't worth two ****ing shits playing the guitar. Yet he makes the list because Nirvana was so big in the 90's.
I'm sure that John Bohnam would end up a top 10 listed drummer but the truth is he wasn't very good. A very sloppy ****ing drummer. But I'm sure a Stones top 100 drummers would include him and of course Tommy Lee would be rated very high because he played in Motley Crue and he apparently has a big dong. |
Props for Thurston Moore on the list... he should be way higher than Jack White.

I can't believe anybody would even bother discussing a list of guitarists that has Joni Mitchell AND Willie Nelson listed ahead of Mike Campbell, James Hetfield, Andy Summers, Dimbag and Lindsey Buckingham.
Come on, they're trolling you hard. |
Johnny Ramone ahead or Randy Rhodes... ROFL
|
OK, here's one that is just unforgivable--no Bob Seger.
No Bob Seger They put a lot of other questionable guitar players on this list but no Bob Seger. Why? |
100.Lindsey Buckingham -what up wit dat?
where the hell is Jake E Lee? |

This list must be Rock Guitarists because there are a whole lot of Jazz players that
could shred these guys. I love Hendrix and Clapton both moved Rock music into the future but if we are talking Guitarists then how do you leave off Segovia,Malmsteem, Pass, Montgomery or a thousand other shredders from a lot of genres. This is clearly a Rock list and should be labeled accordingly. You might be amazed at how many of the hit Rock albums since the early 70s featured guys like Glen Campbell and John Scofield. Tommy Tedesco did a lot of sessions with the "Wrecking Crew" and Larry Carlton's work with Steely Dan or Steve Morse's countless Rock album contributions. As a guitarist myself this list is full of great players but there are a lot of guys who did as much if not more than the guys on this list, but who are not well known by the general public. Springsteen, really give me a F*****g break. A lot of these guys can barely freaking play. JMHO |

So really he should be ahead of Peart if you think about it. |

Somehow the music industry was able to convince the sheep of this world to buy his albums and flannel shirts for a decade. On that note, of the top 4 grunge bands that came out of Seattle at that time Cobain was the shittiest guitarist of them all. (I’m talking about Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana). I’ll wager that the drummer for AIC could play guitar better than Cobain. Kurt Cobain had the same influence on guitar playing that Elvis Presley had (none), yet oddly enough Elvis isn’t on the list. |
Mick Ronson is too low at #41. I'd certainly put him in top 20.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5g6--QoPsDM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Glad Curtis Mayfield is included. I didn't see Sly Stone? <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/DAh_4s_-tas" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Van Halen, Angus Young and Rhodes are too low on the list and I think Brian Setzer should have made the list.
|
Alex Skolnick - Testament isn't well known and therefore a great guitarist is left out.
He's not only a metal guitarist, he's been dabbling in the jazz gig lately. Way more talented than Kurt Cobain and many others on the list. |

I don't know shit, in the big scheme of things, but I do know that the last laugh smilie thingy should be taken with a bit more than a grain of salt.
|
This list is completely goofy - seems to be good for their business though. Wonder why the great Robert Johnson dropped from the top ten down to #71 since the last RS top 100 a few years ago.
Fact is there are ten guys in my hometown who play much better guitar than a lot of these names. |
What about the drummer from Rush? He played a mean guitar.
|
No, not even close. Can't complain about Jimmy at #1 but page at #3.
someone was really high when they made this list. |
no Joe Bonamassa?
no Joe Satriani? Those 2 alone aren't on the list and should make top 10 SRV at #12 ? There's a contender for #1 with Bonamassa |
Quote:
That's why I rather trust Guitar World's list than this shit. SRV should be in the top 5. |
Leslie West is kinda high on the list... and why is CC Deville not on the list?
Cobain shouldn't even be on the list... and they have him higher than Joe Perry. Rolling Stone = Dog Urine |
There were a lot of "flash in the pan" guys in the 80's who were more impressive, like Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme. Way better than a lot on this list.
|
First in with Nebraska native Michael Lee Firkins. Back in the 80's I got to meet him a few times when we used to hang out at the real Russo's Music in Papillion. Nice guy and one helluva guitar player.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lLKu8Rlu-H0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The absence of the 4 most influential guitar instrumentalists of our time renders this list null and void. Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson and Buckethead should not only be on this list, but all would be in my top 20.
|
Robert Johnson not in the top 10? That's a big strike against to the validity of this list

These lists are always funny.
Everyone has their own opinion and gets all butt hurt about their heroes being ranked below hacks like Kurt Cobain. I can't believe a guy like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani isn't on the list, yet The Edge is. Blech. To each his own, I guess. |
What no Gary Richrath!!!!
and in honor of today, I give you: <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JiHW32XJHHA?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
How about that Slash dude?
Does anybody here really think he is a great guitarist? He does that one little "doo de doo de doo de" riff a lot, I guess. FAX |

Didn't they publish a list just like this four or five years ago! They are just running out of meaningful articles to write so they do 500 best albums, 100 greatest guitarists, 250 best songs, 10 best album covers, blah blah blah!
It is really dumb and meaningless! |

If you mean their influence is over-rated, you're also wrong. Because they completely changed popular music in the 90's. They basically took the exact same sound the Melvins had and added pop hooks to it. It was incredibly popular and changed music forever. Nobody in the past 3 decades has influenced rock music more heavily than Nirvana. |
Quote:
Welcome to the jungle has 4 keys and 8 key changes. It's a helluva brilliant song. Bands were not doing what Slash was in the late 80's. He was one of the first rock guitarists in that era that wasn't just an Eddie Van Halen wannabe. |
Also, Brent Hinds would shred half of this list into pieces, but Mastodon hasn't sold enough albums to make this list.
|
Honestly even most of the people who omitted from the list that we are arguing about in this thread are not that great!
There are many better players than them, even! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f45ho3Ah2xw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MVtaEv9Q20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om6HDUKBbzE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrB7pmhnm54 |
