Gates used to be my hands down favorite. I don't know if I used it too much or what, but I have really soured on it the last year or so.

I'm probably going to have to go with the masses and say Night of the Living sauce.

I also really like AB's spicy. HATE the original AB's, though.

Jack Stack original and spicy both make their way into my rotation as well. Although good, I don't think they have as much character as the others I use.

Arthur Bryant's makes a sweet sauce that is excellent on turkey. It's a sleeper, not many people talk about it. It's completely different than their original sauce. As said earlier, the original sauce is so unique, it's almost sour and gritty, that many people don't like it at all. I think it's fabulous.

saphojunkie 05-08-2012 11:48 AM

Gates is still my golden standard, but I definitely prefer others for different uses. Gates is my sauce of choice for chicken. Hot & Spicy is the preferred version, but there's nothing wrong with original.

Arthur Bryant's original sauce is best only when putting it on the meat during cooking. The flavor of the sauce isn't nearly as good on meat as a "sauce." I use it on pork ribs, because I think the fire gives it a much better flavor than it has normally. Their Sweet Heat is a nice change of pace. EDIT ^^^^^ I see we are in agreement on Sweet Heat!

Night of the Living Dead is insane on pulled pork. It's perfect. I know there was a discussion of vinegar on pulled pork in the "bash southern BBQ" thread. Personally, I love apple cider vinegar on pulled pork. It should be infused with hot peppers, if you ask me, but no one did so I'll shut up about it.

In terms of beef ribs, I'm also a big fan of mixing both the hot and original Jack Stack sauces for a finish.

Of course, all of these change depending on what rub you are using, and whether you're talking about grilling vs smoking.

God I love BBQ. I can't wait to shoot myself a pig and just go to effing town.

See my post above - you should try using it only during the cooking process. It's really, really good that way, and I'd never use it otherwise.

I don't know where this stuff is made....but I'm in MO and my wife brings this stuff home from antique shops for me. I love hot stuff and I love this sauce. first few bytes really sting! I've only tried the hot, but they make other kinds.

I will admit it, I will use KC Masterpiece when I want BBQ chicken. It pretty good to shred up some breasts for a BBQ chicken sandwich or to throw on some wings if you want an easy variety of sauces.

I typically make my own finishing sauce for pork, but their Tennessee Red will do in a pinch.

Also like Jack Stack spicy

One of the most awesome aspects of living in KC is going into just about any supermarket, and seeing a BBQ sauce section that spans 20 feet....

Yeah. In fact, I used a little tonight. Too spicy for the rest of the family so I get to enjoy it on my time. I like it. I'm not blown away like I have been for anything on my favorites but it's some good stuff. Not quite as good as Beatty's but 100x better than KC Masterpiece.

I have not had good BBQ (real smoked BBQ) in over 5 years since I moved into my current apartment here in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego. The best BBQ I have ever had in San Diego was at Cy Young award winner Randy Jones's restaurant in northern San Diego County when my friend held his wedding reception there. His was the best BBQ sauce I have ever tasted too. They used to sell it in the supermarkets around San Diego, but sadly I have not seen it in at least ten years. He does BBQ at Padres games in a stand there before and during games, but the way they are playing I don't see me getting to a game any time soon(it is very hard for wheelchair bound people to go to restaurants, let alone stadiums). I am still mad at the team for trading away Adrian Gonzalez. There are not a lot of good BBQ places in San Diego that I know of or that I can afford, I never even made to that one made kind of famous by its inclusion in the movie Top Gun
and that place is named The Kansas City Barbeque... Some day.

I love the Carne Asada Burritos that the local mexican food joints have. I in no way meant to suggest that "San Diego BBQ is ground beef with BBQ sauce", but that is what this poor cripple has been reduced to. If done right it can be tasty.

This got me looking up KC BBQ places on youtube. For some weird reason. It's early...

Anyway, a lot of people complain that LC's is dirty and the black customer service people there are rude to the white customers. Which I definitely don't disagree with. However, I do not care. At all. That place can be dirty as hell, and their employees can look at me like they wanna kill me. I do not care. It never stopped me when I was a young teen, and it won't stop me now. Their meat, sauce, and fries are heavenly.

LC's service people treat EVERYBODY that way.

They are slow, and sloth-like, and surly.

They're not prejudiced, they hate everyone equally.

I disagree about the brisket. It's very good. Also don't miss the beans, among the best in town.

The place is certainly not big on atmosphere or ambiance. When you pull up the first time, you might question whether the place is in business or not. The service isn't that horrible though. They don't yell and intimidate you to order or anything(HI, MAY I HELP YOU?!!!).

But yeah, the meat and sauce is top notch. The whole smoked chicken is really good. Beans are awesome. Ribs were average. Brisket is usually great.

I just ate at Pappy's today for lunch, and although it's the best in St. Louis, I have to combine all three of their sauces to get the combination of flavors that I'm used to from many of the sauces in KC.

I'm no heavy connoisseur of BBQ (not really old/experienced enough), but for whatever reason OK Joe's regular sauce hits the spot for me more than any other sauce I've had. Has a nice combination of sweet, smoky and spicy.

That's not true at all. I just want at least as good as my worst when I go there. Contrary to what a few people believe on here, I'm not an amazing smoker. My ribs and pulled pork are pretty good by my standards. I'm hit or miss on brisket just like anybody else. My beans are stupid good but that's mostly because I load them up with meat.

My expectation is that you should be able to do at least as well as I do on a bad day. If it tastes worse than that, then you're pretty bad.

I asked the Firebug dude if he changed his sauce. He told me that his last contract bottler screwed him and thinned it out. He fired him and is using a different bottler. I must have gotten one from the bad batch. I also left with a gallon bottle of Firebug as a tip. So it has been a good day. He also hooked me up with some of Mr. Doggity's hot sauce to sample.

If you're in the vicinity of Leawood, just buy it straight from Shannon. It's cheaper for you and he puts more of it in his pocket.

He moved to Leawood last year. Look up Firebug on facebook. Ask him if he'll sell directly to you. Drop my name if you think it will help. If he's anything like me he'd rather make $2.00 selling a bottle to you for $5 than make $1 selling a bottle for $7 in the store.

Actually, I've heard that as well, they had a fire awhile back and I do not even know if they rebuilt the place or not. I rarely get out and go places these days, at least I can dream, that is still free.

No Facebook link on his website and can't find it through FB search.
