Yep. That's the same in my situation.

However, if I take a few praxis exams now to get certified in something else, it doesn't count until I was actually hired back.

Great news.

DeezNutz 11-06-2012 02:33 PM

Good deal, man. Extra time and flexibility are great assets. Hoping that a permanent position materializes out of this.

Mr. Flopnuts 11-06-2012 02:33 PM

Glad to hear it's good for now. Will be gladder when it becomes a permanent gig. Good luck dude.

Good for you bud.

teedubya 11-06-2012 02:38 PM

Congrats... "end of the year"? End of 2012... or end of 12-13 school year?

Either way, the holidays will be less stressful in your home! Glad to hear it.

The Bad Guy 11-06-2012 02:42 PM

Thanks everyone.

It's until June.

The union grievance is being heard next Monday. The union is convinced they are winning because the district signed a contract saying they wouldn't furlough.

However, they plan to appeal if they lose so it could drag until June/July, which is ideal for me now that I have a perm. spot.

I'm just thrilled to go back to work. Enjoyed the time with my son and got him potty trained, but it's time to go back.

Chief_For_Life58 11-06-2012 02:47 PM

I hope you taught your son to be a steelers fan or even a eagles fan if you guys live in penn. dont let your son go thru what we chef fans must go thru.

thx again for the ticket brother

I just need some space to rant and let off some steam. As some of you know, I was furloughed from my job 3 weeks ago as a special education teacher. I just had acquired tenure in the district, built up the program from basically scratch, and was let go because of an enormous amount of cuts in the district that initially happened in early July, but because they screwed up the seniority list, I got bumped by one spot. 3 years of sterling evaluations and the best I got was a voicemail from the superintendent saying I didn't have a job anymore.

I had an interview at another district 2 weeks ago and it went well. They had called my principal that was at my old school and they told him it was between me and another teacher I worked with that was furloughed. The district ended up making their decision based on the fact that this teacher also coached field hockey.

This was the absolute worst ****ing time ever for me to get laid off. Just built a new house, just had a ton of concrete work done at the house just a week before the call. They let me go 3 weeks before the year started, which means all the jobs have basically dried up.

I'm just beyond frustrated and angry. The union is doing next to nothing to get jobs back. I've requested a grievance about the fact they had 2 lottery drawings my initial year. The first drawing I was 4th highest on the list. The 2nd drawing, I was 15th. I also was hired for elementary and they moved me to high school a week before the year started. The lady I beat out for the elementary job, who was only hired after I got moved, is higher than me on the seniority list. My union head doesn't seem to really care about that.

I went to clean out my classroom yesterday and it's amazing how cold people can be. Some people I was really nice to just wouldn't even acknowledge me even though I wasn't let go because of any doing of my own. It just pissed me off to be treated like a bastard stepchild.

Even if I do get a teaching job elsewhere, I'm likely looking at 10-15k paycut.

I'm just really angry and needed to vent tonight.

***UPDATE***

I was called back by the superintendent of the district that furloughed me and they have a long-term sped position available until the end of the year. I accepted it. I go back to my full pay with benefits. While I'm hopeful that a full-time position will present itself, this gives me some security and flexibility.

I'm excited.

Congrats on getting that call...

Phobia 11-06-2012 02:54 PM

Outstanding news. I could use some of that.

HemiEd 11-06-2012 03:13 PM

GloryDayz 11-06-2012 08:09 PM

Very cool... Enjoy.

Straight, No Chaser 11-07-2012 06:30 AM

I'm in education too... in a state that is "right to work", no union to speak of. Sounds like you are too ;-)

I would still keep looking if I were you, especially in Feb/April of 2013. You can always say "no". Otherwise, work on a Math or Science cert. that would certainly trump any coaching experience in another interview "tie".

Just wondering though... you're a special ed teacher and you call yourself "The Bad Guy" that's creepy, dude.

Lono 11-07-2012 08:48 AM

Grats TBG, glad to hear it.

The Bad Guy 05-29-2013 03:16 PM

Do you get your ignored seniority back too?

MTG#10 05-29-2013 04:34 PM

Awesome, congrats. They basically just saved a bunch of money for you. Go splurge and stimulate the economy.

BigRedChief 05-29-2013 04:35 PM

I hope we will look back on this era of blaming teachers for economic issues as a WTF were we thinking era.

Glad to hear teachers are back teaching. Good for you Bad Guy and all your fellow teachers.

DeezNutz 05-29-2013 04:45 PM

Mr. Laz 05-29-2013 07:51 PM

So a Union used some kind of arbitration/lawsuit to force a school district to hire 32 people back?

I wonder which 32 people are going to get fired now to make up for it in the budget.

congrats

Buck 05-29-2013 07:54 PM

Congrats man!

Double down on black. Playing with the house's money, why not?

No, the union used a contract signed by the district that they wouldn't furlough teachers until a new agreement was reached due to the fact that we took a payfreeze to help the district financially.

No teachers are going to get fired now. The district administrators may not take their typical 5% raise now though.

But more importantly, how about you fist yourself you miserable ****?

Ha, not a chance.

Since I was recalled, my backpay isn't going to be anything great. I'm just thankful that I will have a job moving forward and my family will have uninterrupted benefits.

Buehler445 05-29-2013 10:03 PM

My Mom was a teacher for 30 years. They get nearly zero respect and are underpaid- while the Board of directors make bank for doing nothing. It is a flawed system theat is only getting worse.
