At least the new regime is keeping us guessing and giving us stuff to talk about this off season. I doubt any of us have any idea what move is coming next.

Per @ProFootballTalk, #Chiefs are releasing RT Eric Winston. Move saves $5.5M in cash, $3.5M in cap space.

IDK which one is right

My thoughts exactly.

Albert on the tag this year, gone next.

Rookie plays RT in 2013, moves to LT in 2014.

I'm pretty sure this has more to do with Clark Hunt getting rid of Captain Lips and his mouthing off about the fans.

Direckshun 03-06-2013 07:28 PM

So we know several things:

1. If they were at any point, the Chiefs are not angling Albert for a trade anymore.

2. They're also not going to move him to guard.

3. It's not a sure thing. The Chiefs likely want Albert at LT, and Stephenson can have a shot at RT, and honestly you can get decent RTs in the third round, where we'll have two picks.

4. Nonetheless, it seems far more likely now that Joeckel is a Chief.

B14ckmon 03-06-2013 07:28 PM

Chiefs get Joeckel, Jags get Winston. It's happening.

God this is really ****ing with me right now. Why do this? Even if you are planning to draft Joeckel? Why wouldn't you keep Winston on a much friendlier deal and just let Branden Albert walk?

Why not trade winston for a late round pick? It just makes no sense to me.

No. Andy is one of the few WCO guys that uses a lot of zone philosophies in his run game.

'Hamas' Jenkins 03-06-2013 07:34 PM

I just don't understand the rationale of this move. We have plenty of cap space w/ the impending Cassel release. Winston has some trade value. Surely they could get a 5th-6th round for him even if they flat despised him.

Even if they just look at him as worthless, he has some value as an asset.

ShowtimeSBMVP 03-06-2013 07:34 PM

I don't know what to think anymore. I don't like Eric Winston as a person but am happy he is our RT or was I'd like him to stay so we can have continuety along the line. That & I don't want us waisting a ****ing #1 pick on the offensive line.

Based on recent moves, OT versatility, and that Andy Reid prefers athletic OTs, the #Chiefs likely prefer Eric Fisher over Luke Joeckel.

Or they want the cap space after giving their punter the highest punter contract in the league.

He has ZERO value. Let's not pretend otherwise. You honestly think somehow both us and the Texans cut his ass when either team could have gotten something in return? What's the rationale here?
You pay a left tackle to play right tackle, he's there for a year, Albert defects, the RT becomes the LT, and then you're in the hunt for a right tackle again?

I wasn't to offended by Big Lips last season but if we're getting away from the neighbors then we probably need to run a few of their kin out of the hood.

So he's a better run blocker then he is a pass blocker.

I can't stand these posts. the RT is a run blocker the LT is a pass blocker. I never fully expected him to block pass rushers like a LT ought to. He was gonna have some let loose. He's a RT.

I posted this a couple of times, before we signed him as Texans fans kept warning be careful what you wish for.

Why draft for need, when you can manufacture one?

What Winston would have made is nearly identical to what the first overall pick will make.

The Texans cut him at least, in part, because they were up against the cap. Had they really loved him they could have restructured, but the guy is probably a top 8-12 RT. Although it isn't much value, it is some. Pioli got fifth round picks for Tank Edwards. Granted, Tank was cheaper, but Winston is a far better player on a reasonable deal.

okcchief 03-06-2013 07:48 PM

I'm was pretty unimpressed with Winston as a player so no big deal there. I'm guessing he doesn't fit the scheme, and no one wanted to take on his salary with his current contract. The only thing that sucks about it is imagine they are going OL now which is not what I wanted. I would have rather seen Winston for another year, but he must not fit in at all.

I hope we ****ing trade down.
