That's true. And didn't the WCO pretty much start with Bill Walsh and Joe Montana? I'm not saying Alex Smith is Joe Montana, but old Joe didn't have or need much of a strong arm either.

eliminating turnovers from the QB position...

HUGE for this team.

Anyone who thinks we haven't upgraded our QB situation...is wrong.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Alex Smith fumble and throw more picks than cassel? Unless you just want to cherry pick 1.5 seasons....

I think Alex Smith is an upgrade. I still don't like it and would have been happy if we drafted Geno Smith #1. My biggest concern is if Alex Smith can stay healthy 16 games and if he can't what good is he?

Alex Smith isn't a frog that sings and dances.

He's a ****ing alien that pops out of our chests and sings and dances, killing us as fans in the process.

No you don't, peckerwood niner.

That is NOT a typical Alex Smith stat line

He threw for 240 yards or more exactly SIX TIMES for the 49ers in the last 27 games.

That's not even 25 percent.

Meanwhile he's thrown for 200 or less yards for the 49ers 15 times in the last 27 games.

THAT is what Alex Smith is. Typically, he throws for less than 200 yards.

Garbage.

I'm not thrilled about the trade, but I am not as upset as many. A few quick questions for the board:

1) What numbers do you think Alex Smith will put up for 2013?
2) What numbers would Alex Smith need to put up for 2013 to make this a good trade?
3) What numbers do you think Reid/Dorsey are expecting from Alex Smith?

Alex Smith is an upgrade from Matt Cassel at QB.
That is beyond question.

That upgrade, however, is similar to upgrading from a broken digital clock that is right once a day, to a broken analog clock that is right twice a day.

Had it not been for our turnstile defense, Gonzo's BS offensive pass interference that wiped off a TD, and Priest's fumble we would have won that game. I dont count the 2nd playoff game against the Peytons under Herm, Trent's brain was already scrambled by then.

It appears the short term plan is to stablize the franchise. I t doesn't appear Clark/Dorsey/Reid was willing to take another chance on a slow rebuild again. Basically another 3 or 4 win season. Can't risk losing more of the fanbase.

The dancing frog is an awsome sports analogy. I'd argue that the closest thing the Royals have is Luke Hochevar. He occasionally flashes ace stuff, but in the 5th inning, he just sits on the stage and ribbits.

Fans don't defect. The ones that do are pretending to be fans. And good riddance.

I have been a fan of this team, this uniform, since their Super Bowl win. I have lived through the hopelessness of the late70s-80s and the hopeful 90s and early 00s. Bottom line is it's the name, the logo and the uniform you stay loyal to. People who fill those uniforms come and go. We can only hope that one of these times, finally the right group of people will fill them and we will see glory again. Any deviation from that degree of loyalty disqualifies one from calling himself a fan.

It the same Story every off Season. Alex is the best QB in the league in MAY/JUNE/JULY. He does everything that is asked of him in the off season. I been hearing this same tune from every different OC or HC the Niners have had since 2006. It is always" wow Alex looks sharp", " Alex is teaching others the play book", Alex taking command of the Offense" etc. Then Come Sept..............Offense starts off slow, relies of Def and SP.
I don't see Alex Smith doing much more than his 175-200 yards passing, and little ovr 1 TD a game. The less the Niners asked of him the better he played.

His 2008 or 2010 season would be Alex's dream season. I Hope Alex can pull if off those kind of numbers, he is a nice guy after all.

Alex Smith is not a Mormon. He was born in Seattle, raised in San Diego, and graduated in two years from Utah. I know not all Mormons live in Utah, so living outside of Utah is not my point. He has been reported not to be Mormon before. Only people making assumptions think that.

Reid is Mormon, though and went to the Mormon school BYU.

lol, if you say so. I like the fact that Alex Smith has no ego when it comes down to checking to a run, or throwing a pass to a guy short and giving him a chance to make a play. That's just me. Shrugs. The big play is nice, but keeping the other offense off the field, is just as nice. Especially when you have as good of pass rushers as you guys do, the more time their offense has to spend trying to hurry up and score, the better off you will be.

Just my line of thinking.

Those things are great... as long as he can flip the switch and try to make tougher throws on 3rd down.

Flipping the ball short to a guy - the checkdown pass - has its place. But on third down? All it really leads to is a team that punts. A lot.

That's fine if you have a truly elite defense. It's unlikely Alex Smith will have such a luxury in his time in KC.

We wont know that until the season starts. No one thought the 49ers defense heading into 2011 was going to be elite either.

I agree, he has to pick up the 3rd downs, agreed completely. He also has to feel free to take some chances, and give guys a chance to make a play.....

Agreed on all of the above.
