Peyton could have a pedestrian night and Denver will still be in a good position to win.

Last 6 quarters, colts getting out scored 66-9.

DJ's left nut 11-14-2013 09:16 PM

Interesting question:

If the NFL allowed the Chiefs and Colts to do a wholesale trade of their respective rosters (and you have to give up the first the Colts already did), would you do it?

It really makes you think about that "Quarterback or bust" mentality, doesn't it?

I'll be honest, I'd probably still make the trade because I'm tired of patching up the QB spot. But now look at all the exciting young talent that vanishes in a puff of smoke. Houston, Berry, Poe, Cooper, Fisher - gone. Guys in their primes like Charles, Flowers, Hali, DJ, Bowe, Albert - poof.

Oh we'd get some pieces back - Luck obviously. Castonzo, Hilton, Fleener, Mathis.

But we'd really only improve in a single area. Is that improvement worth it? Would you rather be the Colts over the next 5 years?

I think its an interesting discussion.

On the pro side of the argument, you've got luck and you can build around him.

On the con side, things int he NFL can change in a hurry. With the talent we have, a qb we really like falls int he draft, or bray turns out to be what were all hoping, in 2 years, you could be in great shape.

Fun to think about though

You have to admit though...they are horribly inconsistent.

DJ's left nut 11-14-2013 09:26 PM

The question you end up asking yourself is whether or not it would be easier to fall into a franchise QB or find the 4-6 pieces we'd need to get the defense back to where it is?

Truth be told, it's pretty much a coin flip, but if Luck is more than a franchise QB and instead a HOFer, I think the QB is the way to go.

Though I'm going to be very interested to see how the QB market shapes up in FA over the next 5 years. WIll the performances of guys like Campbell - solid vets that can survive given the ease of the passing rules - lower the market value of QBs? Will they continue to skyrocket and guys like Flacco and Romo will get 2-3 times what anybody else of that skill level would get that played a different position?

Something's gotta give, IMO. Teams can't continue to leverage their QB contracts like they are. The Falcons, Cowboys and Giants are ****ed, IMO.

The only QBs that should be getting those deals are HOF guys. Mere pro-bowlers, etc... should be going for a hell of a lot less.

This is why you should never make assumptions on the outcome of a game where there's still plenty of time left for it to turn.

Although, of course, the same is true for your comment as much as it is for the ones others made previously.

Cutler is another guy that will end up being in that situation. It does seem that finding adequate to even good qb play is so much easier these days than before.

I mean, IMO, you can get what flacco brings for a hell of a lot cheaper than he's giving them.

I kno, I know the Super Bowl run etc, but damn, he's just inconsistent.

Also, he'll, look at what Keenum is doing as an udfa (please let bray do that for us).

With a better support system (coaches, players etc) his play is absolutely good enough to win a sb.

If that's the case, why spend 20+ mil per year?

Like I said - spending insane money on a very good QB needs to go the way of the dinosaurs.

Those supercontracts need to offered to HOF caliber guys only. The rest simply don't bring enough value to offset the fact that they're going to cost enough to keep 2 or 3 top-end starters off your roster.

If that person is Brees, Brady, Rodgers or Manning, sure. Luck or maybe Wilson someday, yup. But if it's Flacco, Romo, Manning, Ryan, etc...; I'm sorry, but the rules are just making passing too easy. You can find someone if you look - like you said, look at Keenum, Foles and others.

I see Tannehill being the guy from this 'kid' class that gets some obscene contract in 3 years that destroys his franchise's ability to compete by 2020.

I think it all started with fear. Teams feared that they couldn't find someone as good, but in doing that (paying what they did and do) it severely inhibits what they can and need to do with said qbs who aren't able to shoulder it all themselves, which is add more elite talent.

Now? He'll, you can find guys like Keenum, foles, Wilson, etc everywhere.

I also think teams are afraid that if they don't sign the guy, he'll go somewhere else and become elite.

TB, for everything they've done wrong, actually handled the Freeman thing perfectly. Everyone called them cheap and stupid for not locking up a young guy that had a damn good year - now they look brilliant.

I hope this calms down a little - it's screwing with the game.
