Good thread. My wife and I have been watching a lot of standup lately. Things we've watched lately that we liked:
Louis CK (duh) Aziz Ansari Kevin Hart |

Rich Little , he was one of the first, and is still very good; Jim Meskimen--does a TON of voices, but isn't as well known for some reason. |

Todd Barry is a very laid back guy. Not as laid back as Steven Wright, but very laid back. In my list of dead guys, I forgot Richard Jeni. He killed himself, which was terrible, because he was fighting depression for a long time. Greg Giraldo was another guy lost to drugs, he was a great stand up. Dave Attell and Jim Norton are both funny too.
I used to love to watch the old school guys on the Dean Martin Roasts and on the Tonight show. Guys like Don Rickles, Jan Murray, Buddy Hackett, Nipsey Russell, Flip Wilson, Red Buttons, Foster Brooks, Bob Newhart, Redd Foxx, Alan King and David Steinberg. Woody Allen was a great stand up, until he started making movies and became a pedophile. |
Frank Caliendo as Adam Schefter....

shit....I forgot about Mitch. he was great.
|
Billy Connolly:

My list:
1. Bill Burr . . 2. Carlin 3. Louie/ Patton / Marc Marron 4. Chappelle/Mulaney/Jeffries 5. Pryor/Murphy/Rock |
Comedy Central's list of the greatest 100 is here:
http://www.listology.com/list/comedy...ndups-all-time Here's another list: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/great...comedians.html I forgot guys like Carson and Letterman, although a monologue really isn't the same as doing 30 minutes of stand up. Russell Peters, Bobcat Goldthwait and Emo Phillips all deserve mention as well. Bobcat is hilarious at standup, especially if you've heard his act lately. |
Past: George Carlin
Present: Bill Burr, Louis C.K. |
Albert Brooks as the world's worst ventriloquist.
From the early 1970s. Nice Hebrew Fro! <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/_J43bcbIzfI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Anybody old enough to remember Frank Gorshin, A.K.A. "The Riddler"
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/LWiqHeVP9PA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
you know who I'll throw here as one that is pretty underrated? gilbert gottfried. what a dirty mother****er

The old timers you listed were so good and are being forgotten or not even known by the younger generation. I used to love watching the Flip Wilson show with my mom and laughed my balls off at Geraldine! |
shit...I forgot about Steven Wright
"My dad used to whisper weird things to me as he was putting to bed. *whispers* Snakes have no arms, that's why they don't wear vests. Good night". |
Steven Wright - "Cross Country skiing is Great if you live in a small Country"
Great to all the Love for Bill Burr tho ..... the epidemic of gold digging whores skit is priceless -- if you got 10 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBVSfgctIpo |
Felicia Michaels is another funny lady (dirty as hell too):
I've heard she even posed for Playboy.... |
Jim Jeffries - "Bare" on Netflix is absolutely worth a watch. Hilarious.

Local dude I grew up with , James Johann has great stuff. Used to open for the Blue Collar team. He's a close friend of my brother and our family. His influence is primarily Carlin and his writing is top notch (when he does his Rural Genius bits on the radio).
|
Hannibal Burress is one of my favorites.
|
Am I the only person who likes Bill Hicks AND Denis Leary? I know Leary gets a ton of shit for rippin off Hicks. But I still like No Cure For Cancer and Lock N Load. It's different enough from Hicks material that I can enjoy it as well.
|
He told a story about a time long ago when Larry the Cable guy was an unknown....when the comedians would go out to eat after their sets....Larry would pull out his ball sack through the leg of his shorts, hold it down with his thumb and raise himself up a bit off of the chair, then tell everyone at the table "dang.. I sat in some gum". Getting everyone to look etc.

I was probably 23 and I mentioned to him my wife and I were going to the show. He got us a great spot (in for free) and got to hang for a long Tims after the show. Holy shit...being back there with a group of comedians was pure ****ing entertainment.

Me too. I've been told the same. The comedian I mentioned, James Johann started doing open mic nights at Stanford's when he was 16 I believe. Or 17. He was still in high school I know that. Its also funny so see someone you know do their "act" ...in his case its a total 180 from the real person. I wish James had more stuff on you tube, but there's some stuff out there. His "schtick" is being a self proclaimed "Rural Genius". His radio segments show case his writing IMO.

No shit right there. Don't think I could do it.

I think James is probably 42 now. Its been his "job" ever since. He goes on like 60-90 day tours at college campuses, comedy clubs, corporate events etc. Recently he's been doing shows on cruise ships.

I think it varies quite a bit. But I know one yr he brought in about 250k I think. I remember it because he was mentioning how he ****ed up on his taxes and ended up owing quite a bit. THis might have been the year or so he was opening for blue collar tour

Lol. You and me both. I think it definitely fluctuates quite a bit. Its pretty consistent though when college tours or the like pop up. He does these nearly every yr. Sometime twice. Add in a few cruises etc and he gets by pretty well.
|
Quote:

I "think" on tour its a deal where he's paid X amount per show or series of shows and everything (expenses) comes out of that. Except for the cruise thing. I think everything is included there. Minus his fee for his manager etc.

Andrew Dice Clay, and also Bobcat Goldthwaite (not sure if I spelled right) is hilarious too!

Ehhhh. Not really. He has more of an "aw shucks" small town boy thing. He grew up in Lenexa and Paola (to some extent).

I've been on a massive binge on Youtube watching tons of comedy shows over the last two weeks.
I have tons of favorites but two comedians that are great at stand up that many people don't mention or know very well are Demetri Martin and Daniel Tosh. -Demetri Martin is very "Steven Wright" like and has amazing jokes and timing. -Daniel Tosh is a comedian who tells very offensive jokes that turn funny in his delivery and willingness to go after very difficult subjects These two shows will have you laughing out loud many times! STRONG LANGUAGE MAKING IT NSFW <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Pzrp1yPnXHQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> INMPORTANT NOTE: You need to select a faster speed to view this-normal speed is too slow. Go 1.25 or 1.5 in the settings <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Lkb7Cm55r28" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Still funny as ****. And the thing with Patrice that so few standups have is, no matter what, his shit has a point and make sense. He didn't shoehorn his opinions to fit a bit. He expressed his opinion, and how he did it reliably happened to be very funny. Still one of the most authentic comics of the era. You can go back and research, when he was at his best was when he was live, say on a radio show or a roundtable. And he could not only tell someone they were full of shit, he'd lay out in excruciating detail WHY they were full of shit. And he'd do it to people's faces. But he'd do it with an attitude that wasn't so much confrontational [or certainly not strident or angry] as it was 'reasonably bemused.' And eventually, the object of his analysis would chuckle, shake their head, and admit 'yeah, I was a little full of shit, there.' Given what has happened, an incredibly funny, sad, poignant and concise line
Spoiler!
He is missed. <iframe width="854" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WD1lGzsLThk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I saw Greg Fitzsimmons over at "The Comedy Club" on State Line. That place is AWESOME, and I'm excited to continue to support it!!

He might have been on the show Crashing (HBO), which I would highly recommend for anyone that likes stand-up. Not a comedy, but funny. Cancelled way too soon (3 seasons). Lots of comedians popped up on that one. |
