Well, it's AC1900 first of all, so with the right client, you could theoretically see Gigabit throughput (yes, 1000Mbps) on the 5Ghz band.

It has exceptional range, especially on the 5Ghz band over any other router I've ever owned.

And these new AC1900 routers (especially the LinkSys WRT1900) now sport USB performance on par with stand-alone SoC-based NAS boxes.

sheesh. I don't think I need that beefy of a router but it sure sounds nice.

Just got off the phone with buffalo and now they are going to send me the new upgrade to the dhp2. Said it is supposed to be on shelves later this month and they will ship it as soon as it is out. The good news, this one has DDwrt on it. Why they went away from that on the DHP2 is beyond me.

The other day my network lost power and my Airport Extreme wouldn't come back on. Thought it had been Gugu'd for sure.

Luckily It just didn't like booting up with all the Ethernet and USB ports plugged in.

They've been really good to me over the years but I'm getting REALLY frustrated with them. I didn't sign up for a beta test when I paid $200 for this router. I'm not new to the game, I know that things don't ever work out of the box but this thing has significant issues with basic functions that should never fail...

If I was in the market for a new WIFI router what would you recommend? Currently I am still using my old Linksys WRT54G

That's tough. The Asus AC routers have all kinds of firmware problems. The Netgear AC routers have similar issues. The Linksys AC1900 just came out and it's running on a Marvell chipset so there's no DD-WRT contingency if things get flaky.

Personally, I think you'd be best to go with a N class router, especially if you don't have any AC clients. You'll have a better chance of finding something mature and stable.

I have to leave right now. I'll post more later.

Checkpoint 640. A tad overkill for home use, but I like it.

OK, so back to this topic.

I was replacing a Netgear WNDR3700 which was the highest-performing router on the market when I bought it in 2010.

It was still functioning but was starting to crap out and with a TCP limit of 4096 sessions, I was due for an upgrade.

I bought an Asus RT-N66U, which is an N900 class router. It has 1000's of excellent reviews and a couple of different firmware options. I had nothing but trouble with mine.

If you're wanting to stay in the $100 range, you might give it a try. Otherwise, I would recommend you check out www.smallnetbuilder.com.

Wow, the belkin I am using right now is actually rated halfway decent on that sight if I am reading things right. Belkin N750 F9K1103

If you were going to upgrade, what would be your reason for doing so?

The main reason I changed was because the firmware sucks and our Pantech smartphones would always kill the router for some reason. Great router otherwise. Now we just don't attach the pantech smartphones and it never crashes.

If I could get ddwrt firmware on it I would be happy.

htismaqe 04-19-2014 07:23 PM

If DD-WRT is the main draw, I'd just go take a look at the DD-WRT forums and see what people are saying.

I'd still recommend an N class router, since DD-WRT is going to be more stable and mature.

That is a N class router.

You could step up from an N750 to an N900.

Thank you very much for the advice and the link. I will probably try to stay in the $100 and under range but would be willing to go a little higher to get something really good.

Well, I have to stick with what Buffalo is willing to send me. In this case it is a N600 that will have DDWRT on it.

Fish 04-19-2014 09:19 PM

Buffalo has a new AC 1750 model available.

htis, how is the AC 1750?

I have a Netgear AC1900. I haven't fully tested it yet, it's pretty buggy.
