I'd love it if we draft Ealy at 23.

The Franchise 04-13-2014 10:08 PM

Offensive line is pretty much the only position I'd be upset if we drafted at 23.

I'm not a fan of Roby and I've seen a lot of him. Not bad talent, but a pea brain. And for as much as I hear about how fast he is, he never seemed to play very fast. I'd be really worried about a guy like that who constantly got beat against the kind of garbage schedule OSU had last year.

Drafting a corner isn't a bad idea. But not high at all on Roby.

All of those positions are either extremely deep, where a player of similar ability can be had later in the draft (CB, OT) or are a position not worth of that high of a pick.

Taking Roby in what could be the best corner class in the last 20 years would be a massive waste of a valuable resource.

So WR shouldn't be on the board either since it's the deepest and best WR class in 10 years, right?

Those limiters being size, arm length, verticality, speed, blocking ability, etc.

All three are exceptionally solid WR prospects, run solid routes, do the little things, but when you consider that:

Cooks: 5'10", 189 lbs., 30 3/4" arms, 9 5/8" hands, 4.33 40, 36.0" vert, 120" broad
Beckham: 5'11", 195 lbs., 32 3/4" arms, 10" hands, 4.43 40, 38.5" vert, 122" broad
Moncrief: 6'2 1/2", 221 lbs., 32 3/8" arms, 9 1/8" hands, 4.40 40, 39.5" vert, 132" broad

Beckham is bigger than Cooks with better explosiveness, Moncrief is bigger than Beckham with more explosiveness.

All three run great routes. All three block well. All three jet off the line.

What's the difference? What's the "limitations" on one versus the other?

All things being relatively equal, I take the guy who's 6'2 1/2", 221 lbs., versus the 5'10", 189 lb. guy because he's going to be able to be more physical, take more punishment, be more effective in blocking, etc.

I agree I'd also take the bigger guy IF I were taking a wr in round 1. But I hope we go D in the first and 3rd. Our D lost us way more games than out O did.

I think there are 5 or 6 WRs in this class that have a chance to be special players.

Watkins
Lee
Evans
Beckam
Cooks

Maybe Benjamin

While this is a deep receiver class, I don't see any of the other guys even close to this group.

It all depends on what you think would be better for this team.

1st - OLB/DE
3rd - WR
4th - CB

or

1st - WR
3rd - CB
4th - OLB/DE

or

1st - CB
3rd - OLB/DE
4th - WR

All of our losses were because of the defense. We're FAR older on defense than offense. Our HC is an offensive genius.

It would make more sense to go defense IMO. I'm not putting my entire faith in a ****ing 5th rd safety to be the messiah. Especially when our CB's can't keep up with speedy WR's, or even WR's that aren't speedsters.

3rd - OL (You better ****ing believe that they need a true high level starter level guy at OG and a good backup at the swing OT spot because they don't have one on roster right now.)
4th - WR (There is going to still be a metric shit ton of talent at this position in this draft when their fourth round pick rolls around - Devin Street, Josh Huff, Kevin Norwood, Mike Davis, Robert Herron, Brandon Coleman are all very, very solid prospects who would give the Chiefs a very good potential #2 WR right from the get go.)
5th & 6th - CB, DT, OL, S, WR, whatever

I don't entirely agree here.

If we had an ILB next to DJ that we didn't have to take out on passing downs, Berry wouldn't need to be dropped in the box so damn often.

That, along with a FS, would go a long way in fixing the coverage issues this team had.

Exactly, and Joe Mays does nothing to help this and neither do any of the other tomato cans we've got on the roster behind the trio of Houston, Hali and Johnson.

It's obvious that Sutton appreciates Berry and would use him as more of a rover as he was in college. (That alone should make just about everyone around here giddy with joy.)

As it stood in 2013, Berry was your ILB on a lot of downs because Jordan and the like simply couldn't be relied upon in coverage. Having a LB who is very strong in coverage allows the LB to actually play the LB role versus having to waste Berry's speed in the back half by bringing him up in the box so often.

Having a guy like Van Noy along with DJ would give Sutton that opportunity. (Along with a guy who can cover ground at the FS position and a healthy Sanders Commings and Jerron McMillian should be able to do just that.)

kccrow 04-14-2014 05:46 PM

Breaking news... Sutton's defense features a "single-high safety"...

Berry isn't backing out of the box whether they have an athletic player at LILB or not. And the reason he isn't is not because he's there to defend the run, its because the single-high safety scheme is better set up to defend the quick passing game than a double-high (cover 2) type of look. And if you guys don't know that, go look it up, but this silly bullshit talk about two deep safeties needs to go. It isn't happening. The league is trending towards single high safety looks. Even traditional cover 2 guys like Monte Kiffen drifted that direction last year.

BossChief 04-14-2014 08:14 PM

Every time Monte Kiffens name gets mentioned, an angel loses her wings and falls from heaven.

Solid point.

I think they tried to trade up to get Kuechly, too. There were definitely rumors flying around that KC was trying to move up to get a defender that went before us. Not bad to end up with Poe, though.

That's a big reason why Alex Smith trusted Bowe later on IMO. His TE's in SF gave him that huge benefit.

Here's a great example.

It's really ****ing hard for DB's to defend against these guys on plays like this, that we run a lot of in this system.

This is why they LOVE Mike Evans IMO. Too bad he is out of our reach.

Bowe did well late in the year because they lined him up in the slot in 11 personnel or motioned him inside where he can use his body to guard against defenders in the middle of the field (also easier for him to get open by design since he's not a polished route runner who can create separation on his own). The body type is not too big of a deal at split end or even flanker where our true #1 will be lining up. Just need someone fluid on the outside. I'm not a fan of the little dude receivers but not a fan of the big lumbering ones like Coleman/Evans either. They should pick someone up around the same size as Bowe (6'1-6'2) like Moncrief.

If you're talking about dropping both safeties "back" into coverage, I can come to no other logical conclusion. Berry is playing exactly where he is supposed to be in this defense and I don't foresee that changing at all. We need a deep cover safety, but they may be fine with Abdullah in that role.

I'm not interested in McCluster Part II.

I really like Rajion Neal out of Tennessee a ton though. Like many backs in past years, very underrated. I always look for change of direction quickness and vision as two major pluses for a running back and he has both. He's a great receiver out of the backfield which is a plus for Reid.

Granted, that's also banking on Commings being able to play FS so Abdullah can play ITB in subs.

I'd like to see him freed up a bit, that's for sure. He was much more of a playmaker in college when he was allowed to roam more. The kid can still cover and make plays, he's just restricted a bit by the scheme, but he's perfect for that spot.

Cornerback has a Friday arraignment

Former Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby is facing a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while impaired despite registering a .008 on a Breathalyzer exam.

That's 10 times below the Ohio state legal limit of .08.

Roby conducted a field sobriety test before taking the Breathalyzer test. He was released on his own recognizance.

He's scheduled for a court arraignment Friday morning.

The case is expected to be resolved without any significant legal ramifications, if any, for Roby, a projected late first-round draft pick.

"This past weekend my client Bradley Roby was issued a citation in Columbus, Ohio for operating a vehicle while impaired," Roby's agent, Michael Perrett of SportsTrust Advisors, said in a statement to National Football Post. "Bradley was sitting in his parked car in a parking lot when he was approached and questioned by an officer. He was fully cooperative and willingly submitted to field sobriety and breathalyzer tests.

"His BAC test registered a negligible .008 and after further testing at the police station, he was very quickly released on his own recognizance. There are no other charges, and we are confident that this matter will be resolved quickly and favorably for Bradley. However, as the matter is still pending, we cannot comment further at this time."

Last year, Roby was initially charged with battery following an incident at a bar in Bloomington, Ind. Then, the charges were reduced and ultimately dropped after a video surfaced of a security officer that showed he was at fault and Roby finished a diversion program.

Roby had a one-game suspension imposed by Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.

Roby was one of 30 players invited to attend the NFL draft in New York City in two weeks.

While the timing of the incident is obviously poor, it's not expected to significantly affect Roby's draft stock.

At the NFL scouting combine, Roby ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds and had a 38-inch vertical leap, a 10-4 broad jump and bench pressed 225 pounds 17 times.

Must have had a cough drop ten minutes before the cop arrived.

That he was even taken down to the station is a ****ing joke after they gave him a field breathalyzer test.

I'd be livid, especially considering that the draft is a few weeks away.

Bradley Roby gives his side of story in OVI incident

Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby gave his side of the story Friday regarding his April 20 citation on a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence in Columbus, Ohio.

A possible first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Roby posted a picture of a document that purportedly shows he registered just a .008 blood-alcohol reading in the alleged incident.

Roby’s agent, Michael Perrett, told ElevenWarriors.com that Roby’s blood-alcohol level was only .008, a reading below the legal limit.

Via the Cleveland Plain Dealer, online Franklin (Ohio) County Municipal Court records show that Roby will be arraigned in the OVI case on Tuesday, April 29.

In other tweets Friday, Roby noted that he “was not driving” and “did not get arrested” in the alleged incident. Roby also said that while he took “ownership” for what had happened, he was not happy with how it was portrayed by the media.

Roby pleads guilty to reduced charge

The pre-draft legal issue for cornerback Bradley Roby has been resolved almost as quickly as it arose.

On Tuesday morning, Roby resolved a citation for operating a vehicle while under the influence by pleading guilty to having “physical control” of a vehicle while under the influence.

“Though my client, Bradley Roby, maintains his innocence and feels he would have been completely exonerated had he taken this matter to trial, Bradley has accepted the prosecutor’s offer of a reduced charge to ‘physical control’ to bring closure and finality to this situation ahead of next week’s NFL draft,” agent Michael Perrett of SportsTrust Advisors said in a statement issued to PFT. “A ‘physical control’ citation is a non-moving violation that will not result in any points being added to his driving record and there will be no license suspension. Bradley is scheduled to complete a three-day alcohol educational class this week which will effectively terminate the case. This plea was accepted by the judge and entered into the record today. Bradley is very focused and is excited about starting his NFL career.”

While a 911 caller claimed that Roby “almost hit a bunch of kids” while driving at 3:00 a.m., the prosecutor obviously believed that it would be impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Roby was indeed driving under the influence.

Roby ultimately was found behind the wheel of a parked car, with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.008 percent, one-tenth of the legal limit.
