Who's John Wayne?

Kaepernick 08-03-2014 06:18 PM

Well, maybe not the Duke. I guess there is a reason they never made a sequel from McQ or Brannigan.

I'll throw in my vote for The Cowboys. How can a western with Louis from Revenge of the Nerds as one of the main characters not be at the top of the list?

Heh, Brannigan. That was the one I was trying to think of earlier. For some reason I thought it was a sequel to McQ. They look pretty similar.

Not his biggest fan, but I'd have to go "The Shootist"... he was dying at the time and knew it, he displayed some vulnerability in that one that he never did in others.

Being old and worn out came naturally to him in that one.

I think why I liked Big Jake so much was Dick Boone. That guy was one of my favorite all time bad guys. And near the top of my list for westerns was Paul Newman and Dick Boone in Hombre.

Why? He was a horrible actor. He was always just John Wayne. Even when he was Gengis Khan he was still saying Pilgrim to everyone. He had less range than one of those cork popguns with the string on them.

ROYC75 08-03-2014 08:41 PM

Oh Lordy Be, so many, I have to think about it some. Many of the ones listed are very ,very good, some that are not listed are some other war movies, South Pacific, The Fighting Sebees.

Just so damn many .....

Who can remember John Wayne on the Red Skelton Show in this Rooster Cogburn stint.

Part of me agrees. It's basically like Clint Eastwood. He plays every role the same. It's charisma more than actual acting.

Not a knock, I love both actors. Just being realistic.

I thought Lee Marvin as Liberty Valence was a dandy villain.

I don't think anybody mention Liberty Valence. John Wayne & Jimmy Stewart. What's not to like. And good story besides. Just not my favorite, though.

It is not as if his movies are out of production. William Shakespeare died a few centuries before I was born, but I still read a story or 2 by him.

Cable/Satellite TV is full of John Wayne movies. You can't watch Turner Classic Movies any week without a John Wayne movie.

John Bonham died around the same time as John Wayne, so I guess you've never heard a song by Led Zepplin either? :doh!:

Who the hell under 75 watches Turner Classic Movies? FWIW, I've only seen one John Wayne movie (The Quiet Man) and that was for an Irish Arts course I took while doing a semester in Ireland.

He was a fine actor, maybe not great but certainly better than most give him credit for. There are a hand full of movies that showcase this. He just didn't NEED to deviate from the character that he had spent a career creating. That character kept people coming back movie after movie after movie. That character made him the biggest star Hollywood has ever produced. He just gave movie goers what they wanted: John Wayne.

What did you learn about my ancestorial and genome home?

TEX 08-04-2014 10:05 AM

True Grit

Raiderhater 08-04-2014 11:18 AM

Guess I forgot to state my favorite earlier. You can include me in the Liberty Valance camp. Critics questioned Ford for filming in b&w at the time but, I think time has proven that he knew what he was doing (as he usually did).

Several of my other favorites have been mentioned already so I'm going to list one that never makes anyone's list: Wake of the Red Witch. Similar in some regards to Reap the Wild Wind (some even claim it was knock off), the Duke plays more of an anti-hero role. The Batjak shipping company from the film was the origin for Duke's Batjac film company. The spelling being slightly different with a c instead of the k due to a typo.

Graystoke 08-04-2014 11:20 AM

True Grit.

I loved the remake of True Grit with Jeff Bridges

People who like to see good movies. Try it sometime.

I guess you have never then seen a single movie with Humphrey Bogart, Steve McQueen, Gene Hackman, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Charleton Heston, Kirk Douglas, Dean Martin, James Cagney, William Holden, William Mitchell, Liz Taylor, Ingrid Bergman, Myrna Loy, Sophia Loren, Susan Heyward, Rita Heyworth... I could go on all day.

I guess you have never seen any old geezer movies like Casablanca, the Great Escape, the Manchurian Candidate, Bullit, Shane, North by Northwest, Dr. Strangelove, the Magnificent 7, Ocean's Eleven, the Italian Job with Michael Caine, the Philadelphia Story, the Grapes of Wrath, Cool Hand Luke, Patton, Spartacus, the Best Years of our Lives, the Man Who Would Be King.

Yeah, that channel really sucks if you are under 40. :doh!::banghead:

You have missed many of the best movies ever made.

blaise 08-04-2014 12:00 PM

Rio Bravo

otherstar 08-04-2014 12:28 PM

Tie for me: The Quiet Man, and The Shootist. Close second was Rio Bravo (my Dad's favorite movie of all time).

Steron 08-04-2014 12:49 PM

The Quiet Man

gblowfish 08-04-2014 02:06 PM

True Grit. That's the one he got his Oscar for.

Halfcan 08-04-2014 02:55 PM

I have seen most all of his movies except a few of his bit parts in the early days. He didn't get a lot of screen time in those first ones-but did all the stunts and some amazing horse riding.

One of the greatest of all time.

penguinz 08-04-2014 02:56 PM

They are all bad.

keg in kc 08-04-2014 02:57 PM

The Quiet Man. And probably The Green Berets, but only because it was on TBS about ten billion times while I was growing up.

Sorry, but I don't watch films unless they are based on comic books or cartoons from the 1980s.
