Blue Jays lost tonight when our good friend Jose Bautista was called out for the new Chase Utley slide rule... illegal slide. Didn't try to stay on second base, tried to grab the infielders leg. Kept two runs from scoring. This is going to be the topic of the day for sure.

By the book, it's the right call. Will they enforce it as strictly in every case of this (or something similar to this) throughout the year, though? I very much doubt it, but there are going to be a ton of shitstorms if they do.

I have a huge problem with the Markakis slide being ruled illegal and I would have a problem with this one as well if he didn't blatantly grab his leg.

The rule is just shit

Gibbons says they will come out wearing dresses tomorrow.

jd1020 04-05-2016 10:13 PM

I just don't understand why it's important to make sure you attempt to stay on the base. The runner is out. Who gives a **** if he remains on the bag at that point? The problem with the Utley "slide" was that he was beyond the bag and made contact with the defender before even hitting the dirt.

If you are going to go to such stupid lengths to destroy a part of the game since it's existence then get rid of the neighborhood bullshit.

I don't think it's the slide, per say. It's more about highlighting the fact that he took the inside tract to be in position to interfere with the play.

Busch League move by Bautista. Big surprise.

It's 100% about the slide. What was wrong with Markakis' slide other than the fact he didn't remain on the base after being called out?

Yep, it's the slide. It's the fact that, according to the umpires, Bautista intentionally initiated the contact with the fielder, which made it not a "bona fide slide" under 6.01 (j).

Quote:

Notwithstanding the above, a slide shall not be a “bona fide slide”
if a runner engages in a “roll block,” or intentionally initiates (or
attempts to initiate) contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking
his leg above the fielder’s knee or throwing his arm or his upper
body.

Expect managers to come out and argue for a replay of any takeout slide this year. This is going to get old real fast (especially if they continue to enforce the rule as strictly as they did here).

He slide to the inside of the base....the same side of the base the infielder is on. He did it on purpose. He intentionally reached out and attempted to grab the infielder and pull him off of his feet.

No brainer call there. Bautista violated the spirit and the letter of the rule.

Last year he and everyone else in that situation would have just barreled right into his legs (and it would have been fine). The times are changing.

Rules change every year. The players know the rules--mlb goes to each and every team in Spring Training and reviews the rule changes with the teams....so he knew the rule and he willingly violated it. He should have been called out.

Yeah, I said as much above. There will be many more cases like this, though, with takeout slides being such an ingrained part of baseball. And like with the catcher blocking rule, I have my doubts about it being applied consistently.

BigCatDaddy 04-06-2016 06:29 AM

That one was pretty easy. He was fine until he tried to reach out and take the leg out with his arm.

Nope. His arm has little to do with it. He made no attempt the stay on the bag.

The Utley rule was intended to protect defenders from malicious intent and it's being used to overrule a baseball play that's been ok for over a century. Its just stupid.

I think they just cited the wrong rule. Grabbing a throwers leg has always been interference.

WilliamTheIrish 04-06-2016 07:06 AM

Yea, he reached out, ever so slightly. But that call was horseshit.

MLB has effectively ****ed themselves on this rule. The neighborhood play is gone, the pop up slide is now reviewed every time and with these two things happening, they have forced the infielder and base runner together in he same spot.

As a result, there will be a lot of guys who get nicked up or hurt at 2B.

But that slide? What the ****? That's a nice easy slide.

Bautista yanking out the back foot as he is getting ready to release. Ever try to throw a ball with someone grabbing your back leg. Call is a no brainer, especially given the distance the thrower was from the bag. Perhaps we should also allow DT tomahawk chops to to throwing arm?

Two things:

1. Yes, by the book, it's definitely interference. But technically so was barreling into fielders as they were throwing the ball and runners have done that for years with no repercussions. If this was 2015, what Bautista did yesterday is certainly not getting called interference.

#2. As you mentioned, though, they actually cited the new Utley rule in making the decision. It appears they deemed what he did with his arm to be an intentional initiation of contact and said it wasn't a bona fide slide on that basis.

It should have been illegal previously also. I still think the arm whip to foot was key but if he didn't do that the throw doesn't go 15 ft widewide of the bag, game over. Worth the gamble I guess.

Mother****erJones 04-06-2016 07:40 AM

I agree with the call. You can't grab at the guy as he's trying to throw it to first. That was just a dumb thing to do by Bautista.

Is it fair to ask about Cain being a bit too aggressive in CF? He crashed jnto the wall Game 1 and made a great diving play Game 2 and nearly slid into the wall. He's a great defender but his bat has improved so much he's a legit 3 hitter. Is it worth going after these balls? Can we lose him for a month?

Last year there were only 2 players +15 runs offensively and defensively (you can guess one). He is an elite defender but it's ok to let some of these go

It just goes against the teams make-up. I cringe hard every time Hos slides into first, as a broken wrist would be devastating for him at this point in his career.

But this team lets the players be who they are. Sometimes that doesn't work (Game 7 of the 2014 World Series), but more often than not it has (2014 & 2015 playoffs).

Speaking of former Royals, I feel for BGJ. Though his Padres came close today, they still haven't scored a run this season (What a way to kick off their home opening series).

This city is so nuts for a winning team, there just aren't many places like it. Obviously these guys are going to go for the money... but just like Gordon, if they stay they will be treated like Gods. Then again, maybe they'd like actually being able to go out in public.

Shockingly, the Rays didn't look to throw a beanball yesterday at him. Who could have predicted that? LMAO

Guy I graduated high school with has worked on the grounds crew for years. Saw on FB yesterday that he got a WS ring. Not the one the players got, obviously, but still very cool that he has something like that and was, however small, a part of that.

If you thought this place was full of despair, take a stroll through MetsRefugees, there's a near consensus that this is a "loser's ring" celebrating a second place finish.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I thought the rings and banner were well received here in 2015.

Speaking of rings.

#Royals WS rings appraise at $23,700.

I remember (or misremember) Ms telling Griffey to stop crashing into walls because it just wasn't worth it.

Beautiful rings guys congratulations!

tk13 04-07-2016 08:01 PM

The Twins just finished getting swept by Baltimore. They're 0-3. They're going to come in tomorrow ticked. Ned better be ready.

Mother****erJones 04-07-2016 08:02 PM

Sox took 3 of 4 in Choketown. Nice start vs a shitty team.
