I missed this thread when I was posting in the other Steelers thread. As mentioned, the only unsettling thing about it is that it's been in the forecast pretty steady for a couple weeks now. The weather nerds I follow on Twitter, etc, have all mentioned it bears watching.

It's still several days out though, so plenty of time for it to change. Or move north/south so that KC gets rain or snow instead of ice. Honestly you don't need 2 inches of ice to cause havoc though, it's impossible to drive on. Just get half an inch and you're finished.

I do wonder though... say it's a worst case scenario ice storm and the whole city is shut down, power outages, etc... would they actually postpone a playoff game?

If it's ice it makes no difference what you drive.

Yeah. If there's 2 inches of ice, it'll be lock down for a while. Like, months.

When was the last time anywhere in the US got 2 inches of ice? 40,000 BC?

You don't have to go back that far at all...hell, texas got 2 inches of ice back in 1978 or something like that. And most people were without power for 2 days. I repeat, 2 days. In Texas. Idaho has the record of 8 inches ice accumulation back in the 60's.

Im REALLY concerned with potential ICE STORM in our area this weekend! We live in the country, and ice normally means pontential loss of electricity on our farm. I will be one PO'd farmer/rancher, if I lose juice and interferes me watching the Chiefs!!!!

I have an old generator Im going to park by my power pole, just in case. It will run 10 hrs before it runs out of gas, so Im going to be ready. On a second note, also have potential cattle numbers roaming freely on the open prairie due to ice breaking the electric fence that is keeping them in the wheat fields, where they are grazing.

But, my main concern, is being able to watch the CHIEFS!

I remember looking out the window of my 6th floor apartment and seeing several arcs of electricity and a big flash from a power station several blocks away and the lights from other buildings start to go dark one by one like a bad Michael Bay film.

There was a bad ice storm in Sac, Carroll and Calhoun county Iowa 2010
Breda Iowa got around 2 inches of ice. No electricity for 2 weeks

From the nws:

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHWEST...NORTH CENTRAL AND
WEST CENTRAL MISSOURI...AS WELL AS EXTREME EASTERN KANSAS.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

NO HAZARDOUS WEATHER IS EXPECTED.

MORE DETAILED INFORMATION CAN BE ACCESSED AT...

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

LIGHT FREEZING DRIZZLE WILL BE POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
WIDESPREAD IMPACTS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED WITH THIS SYSTEM.

CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO INCREASE THAT A WINTER STORM SYSTEM WILL
IMPACT MUCH OF THE LOWER MISSOURI VALLEY THIS WEEKEND. THIS FEATURE
WILL BRING A WINTRY MIX OF PRECIPITATION TO THE AREA...WITH ICING
LOOKING MORE PROBABLE AS FREEZING RAIN OVERSPREADS THE AREA FRIDAY
NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY. IF LATER ARRIVING DATA CONTINUES TO SUGGEST
SUCH A SCENARIO...DANGEROUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL BECOME LIKELY
FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH AT LEAST EARLY SUNDAY AS TEMPERATURES REMAIN
BELOW FREEZING.

MORE DETAILED INFORMATION CAN BE ACCESSED AT...

displacedinMN 01-10-2017 08:36 AM

The field will be covered. If this does happen. The sidelines and seats will be a mess.
Getting there will be a mess. It would take an massive storm to cancel the game.

Then it has to be postponed to Monday-or moved to another site. Detroit favors Pittsburg.
Move it to Minneapolis so I can go.

They installed a heating system under the field awhile back so the field may be wet, but at least it won't be frozen.

Just something to keep an eye on. Here last night, one channel was calling for four inches of snow today. Another, nothing. This morning wake to ice just south of us and a few Jack knifed tractor trailers blocking the interstate, but nothing here. Good luck and be safe everybody if it does happen.

Chieficus 01-10-2017 09:11 AM

I just checked the forecast models that I can access.

Friday afternoon/evening looks like an icy build up for south of I-70, but not large amounts. Right now for Saturday KC and along I-70 looks to be where the freezing line will set up. If that's true, then south will be rain, albeit cold rain; and north of that will be the freezing rain / sleet / ice. Also right now, the vast majority of the precipitation will be rain in southern Missouri.

KC should get some ice, but it won't be anywhere near the catastrophic levels the link in the OP is predicting.

But if the moisture shifts north and the freezing line south, then that's a different story. So it's worth keeping an eye on these next couple of days and make some basic preparations, but overall the ice part seems to be setting up for a run of the mill ice event. If you're living in Nevada, Joplin, Springfield, etc., though--be ready for lots of rain.

kcfanXIII 01-10-2017 09:20 AM

I'm far from panicking, but it does deserve some attention. Just keep an eye on the forecast over the next few days.

I will say this. Our two most complete games came in pouring rain @OAK and against DEN.

I have no idea. Just making a joke. I assume its up and used for conventions and concerts. I doubt they could get it StL NFL ready in time anyway.

It's hard to say at the moment b/c of how close KC is to the forecasted freezing line--so the models I can see mix rain/snow/ice for the precipitation totals.

Best guess I can tell would be right around 0.25" of ice, so, yeah that could affect some power lines. If the ice totals shoot up further, though, then you're talking wider impact, longer outages, etc.

ptlyon 01-10-2017 09:59 AM

Wind certainly is a factor as well

2002 was great and magical. Didn't lose power, well my dad's house lost power to half of his house but nothing major or huge, and I got the week off school so I just stayed in and played Final Fantasy X all week.

Frosty 01-10-2017 10:35 AM

If ice hits, the issue on whether the game is played at Arrowhead or not could be power, not road conditions. Ice storms take down trees that take down power lines. Does Arrowhead have generators? I don't think the NFL wants a play-off game they can't broadcast.

I assume they would have generators brought in if they don't have theme already. The lights alone would use a lot of juice.

The Royals had something happen during the world series that caused a bunch of drama. Fox was scrambling for generators if I remember correctly.

You think people from the midwest have never seen this shit before? I'm driving 3 hours to go to the game and will stay the night after but it's not keeping me from going.

Pitt fans may not travel that far but local area will show.

Tickets might end up readily available...

The weather reports really don't have a clue. The "line" of the storm can fall anywhere between Colby KS and Pittsburg Ks. That was as of a few minutes ago. I should have been a weatherman or a quarterback whisperer, you can just about pull anything out of your ass. When you're wrong just keep doubling down
