That's entirely what college basketball is these days. Haven't dealt with it well so far, but this staff has no choice but to adapt or die. We have more than enough money to do so.

You guys don't care about efficiency for some reason. Just care about stats.

Guy shot 45% from 2FG last year. And hes 6'8"!

Its exactly why I predicted AJ Storr would absolutely suck for us. Everyone piled on me. Then AJ Storr put up one of the worst seasons in KU history.

His 2nd closest statistical comparison on KenPom is Jaylon Tyson last year, who is currently on the Cavs.

You guys thought AJ Storr was good because he could get alot of buckets, badly.

We need another guard that can get to the rim at will. And draw fouls. Throw the bag at PJ Haggerty and make him transfer.

AJ storr year before coming to Kansas - about 14 shots a game 43% shooting
Remy Martin - about 14 shots a game 43 percent shooting

I wouldn't necessarily turn Hall away but I think people are expecting him to be more than he is. He's better than Storr because he can rebound but he's not a good play maker and he makes alot of mistakes. Perhaps he was asked to do too much at UCF but I don't see him being a cornerstone player. I did not realize he was so keen on drawing fouls so I take back my "he sucks" comment.

I would try to find someone better first if we are offering 1M+

Pablo 03-30-2025 07:33 AM

the death of college bb.

There needs to be some changes. Like, if you're getting NIL money, it's a two-year no-transfer contract, and you can't get the money until you either graduate, or officially enter the NBA draft.

It's sad what is happening to one of my favorite sports.

Kiimo 03-30-2025 08:20 AM

You can't get the money until you graduate is boomer dumbassery wtf man

I like the two year no-transfer rule though, but would need caveats. Like, if the coach bails the no transfer is null and void

My idea is to have players sign contracts just like coaches, complete with buyouts in both directions and opt outs if a coach leaves too.

Player outplays his contract at a mid major? They have option to renegotiate. Duke wants you? They pay your school a pre-negotiated buyout before you can go. School doesn’t want you to stay? They pay the player a buyout to separate.

NCAA just needs to stop pretending CBB has been anything but a semi-pro league for decades. Contracts for players, even if the money is coming from boosters, is over due. Two year minimum is best.

I miss seeing players develop at a school and then having mid-majors loaded with seniors who grew together and became a threat to disrupt the power conference schools hold on the F4, etc. Bill's best teams were combinations of 4-5 year players with talented freshmen.

I also said OR enter NBA draft.

I don't like the idea of a 19 year old kid getting tons of dough, while playing.

Kinda removes some of the urgency from playing hard every night.

I also feel like the contract has to include language about playing in the post-season as well (see all the College FB players sitting out bowl games).

Either they are student athletes - or it's simply a minor league for NFL/NBA, but the in-between place we're in right now is a joke.

Kiimo 03-30-2025 08:49 AM

That means you have to be good enough to get into the NBA OR have to graduate in order to get the cash you have earned. Both are a violation of a players' rights so you can enjoy a sport more.

It's boomer dumbassery.

I agree that this in between isn't fun though

I agree.

And honestly who gives a **** if they’re students anyway?

If they’re getting paid, I prefer they work on their craft to earn that money.

Spend more time training, less in class (that they likely rarely attend anyway).

Kids who want to, can attend classes. Makes sense for the ones who won’t go pro. Silly for Darren Peterson to pretend he will be on campus to learn.

"Chuckers" can work at Kansas if it makes sense on the team.

How did I predict AJ Storr would suck ass and did not feel the same about Remy then?

A few reasons.

AJ Storr does absolutely nothing well, other then volume score. He doesn't get rebounds, assists, steals, or blocks despite being 6'7". Remy could draw fouls better, he could pass waaay better, and was more active.

Storr was a 46% 2FG and he needed the ball in his hands a long time to do it. Remy was a 51% 2FG scorer and while still not great he could get the ball and make a play quickly.

Also while Storr was 8 inches taller than Martin, Martin was actually a BETTER rebounder. Per 40 min stats while at KU Remy was 5.7 rebounds vs AJ Storr at 4.3. That is incredible.

At least Hall is a chucker who can draw fouls and rebound. Along side a super efficient scorer and Dix maybe it wouldn't be too bad I just don't see elite KU so soon again.

We can't change the way we feel Kiimo. Im not the only one. And I felt this way at the beginning of the year last year when KU was still good. The game is too transactional. You don't see players grow within a program anymore. You can't count on anyone to stay.

Look, nobody is saying the players don't deserve NIL. The reality is the sport is simply less appealing than it was before. Just about every college fan agrees except you.

I never said it wasn't less appealing. You're arguing with statements I didn't make. I said it isn't destroyed and there are plenty of things that can happen to make it better.

What can't happen is going back to the Big 8 and 1987. That part is impossible.

BigRedChief 03-30-2025 11:04 AM

Where does this NIL money come from? Is it all donor money or "sponsorships"? And why cant we know the amouint per player and or team? They are no longer "students". They are getting paid.

The first weekend was terrible (one of the largest margin of victories every for the first weekend and no real chaos), and this 2nd weekend has made up for it some with a few great games. And I much prefer chalk.

Not that I think everything has been burned to the ground with NIL and the transfer portal... much like those Bucknell and Bradley losses, you can't look at results immediately after a huge shift and say 'I told you so, everything sucks now!' We'll have to see over 5 or 10+ years how teams deal with it, how players deal with it, adjustments across the board, etc.... and in the long run if it really impacts the product on the court or not.

There is an argument though that winning that National Title hurt Self moving forward because he focused on the result. He thought Since KJ and Juan were on that team then I MUST need to build the team around them. There is an argument that none of KUs struggles are really portal related.

Giving the keys to the kingdom to Juan and KJ for two years in a row there is very little hope. You need multiple NBA players for it to work around them..so it didn't work.

I think it is a little bit of both (portal and hitching the wagon to the wrong players). If we are still floundering after next year then it is time to reevaluate things. Trust in Self until then. His loyalty may be his biggest flaw but with Juan KJ and HD gone it should be addition by subtraction. Self can coach. He's just a bad GM at times.

CG - Darryn Peterson
CG - Elmarko Jackson
SF - Josh Dix
PF - Keyshawn Hall

------
PF - Bryson Tiller

Elmarko makes more sense for the bench point guard.

Likely won’t do much better than that for a guy to come off the bench in the portal.

Not surprised in the least.

I will say, I am kinda curious where FB will end up and how he will be used.

smithandrew051 03-30-2025 06:36 PM

Passmore to the portal too.

Doesn’t matter much likely.

smithandrew051 03-30-2025 06:39 PM

Apparently Bryson Tiller may leave too.

Yeah, we may have a problem.

Source?

NCAA bball is awful. Can't count on anyone, ever. They could leave a month before the first game.

Thanks for setting me straight.

But seriously, wasn’t the portal thing a result of Covid and that whole shitshow, giving guys extra years of eligibility, etc? Am I misremembering or just flat wrong?

WTF for? Even a basketball dumbass like me could see his skills were light years ahead of KJ. You think an apology and a promise of a starting spot is all you need to do? You ****ed up big time. Learn from this.

Would be ironic if he went to K-State, and he kicked Bills behind each time they played.

While it somewhat coincided with COVID, there were unrelated lawsuits challenging the transfer rules that actually caused the transfer portal to become what it is today. NIL helped juice it up as players started looking for paydays.

Tiller looks to have been injured again, or at least required surgery.

All of this has to be signs of major issues inside the program, right? Who is left on the team at this point?

lawrenceRaider 03-31-2025 11:48 AM

I don't really care about losing players who drastically under performed last year.

Losing Bidunga stings a bit, but until I see the team for 2025-26, I'm just can't care all that much.

I wonder how long before people start calling for Self to step down

If things don’t look better next year, that’s a very disturbing trend.

We can chalk some of the last 2 years up to a core that didn’t work out.

Year 3 with a brand new core needs to show improvement.

I have reasonable expectations, but I think we’ll know progress when we see it.

Yeah, only real issue/surprise has been Flory so far (and given how his playing time was dealt with, it is perhaps not so surprising). Not concerned with the others.

Which is why I’m not panicked about Self yet.

If next year looks ugly again? Yeah, the conversation starts.

BWillie 03-31-2025 04:30 PM

Sources have indicated to me that we will sign some players
