Soria is very very broken.
I meant to mention it after the Cardinals game on Sunday, but I got drunk at the ballgame and then came home to downed trees in my neighborhood and flat forgot. I was at that Sunday game and in the AB before the double play that bailed him out, I saw what absolutely convinced me he was fried.
1-1 count and he throws some kind of breaking ball. As he delivered it, his top half completely ran away from his bottom half, his shoulder flew open and his entire body slowed down. He couldn't have done more to telegraph a breaking ball had he yelled it before he threw it. It took me a second to realize that time hadn't been called or something, that's how completely out of sorts he looked. He just looked like an unfolding lawn chair up there.
When guys lose their mechanics like that on a breaker, it's because they're hiding an injury. He's trying to get some break on his offspeed pitches but it hurts to do it, so he's trying to coax one up there. Worse still, I hear he's working on a cutter. Ask Cardinals fans what happens when a power reliever with a hammer curve starts featuring a cutter. Jason Isringhausen ruined 1 season and damn near ruined another one before his arm finally exploded. By the 2nd season he'd pretty much abandoned throwing his fastball for that cutter and his curveball, previously dominant, was replaced by some slurve thing. All of it came because his arm hurt when he tried to throw a 4 seamer or a curveball.
Soria isn't coming back around this year. I've seen this movie and the ending isn't pretty. That single pitch he threw against STL was as ugly and telling as anything you'll see from him.
