Williams is unknown.

For what they need in a 4th or 5th receiving option, they'd rather have known I'd guess

They see Williams every day. They have meetings with him every day. They know what he can do on the field and in the meeting room. Apparently it's not good enough to get him on the 53 man roster.

I'd imagine he's better than avant at this point, but they don't necessarily need better for that spot.

If that makes sense

He's better because....? Because he had a good preseason? A lot of 3rd/4th string players have good preseasons at least once in their career. Doesn't mean they actually deserve to be on an NFL roster or actually play in games.

And alot of Veterans have been kept over younger unknown guys because coaches and front offices are familiar with the vet and know he won't **** up.

With Hammond back there, I can just feel Kyle Williams Part Deux happening to Alex again.

This would be the most depressing way to end our season.

To avant's defense: he brings in hard work and is a model of discipline in a league where players without respected veterans to guide them often turn into spoiled ****s who show little respect to their coach and become locker room messes. He's a good soldier and having both him and Maclin around emphasizes what Reid expects out of his players: loyalty, hard work, and discipline.

Either that or they couldn't find anyone better

Basically. I'm not defending Avant because he's a great player or anything like that. But if you're saying he should be replaced, you can't show me a 27 year old practice squad player as his replacement.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but it's hard for me to believe that Williams couldn't have accumulated 13 catches over 15 games if given the opportunity.

Smells like another classic case of a coach playing favorites with a veteran they have years of experience with.

Basically, yes.

Avant brings more than numbers, which in this situation is important.

Yeah, any time I've heard Andy talk about Avant, he's mainly praised him as a locker room leader. Putting up big numbers isn't the reason he's here.

Then, as I've said for a year, hire him to coach.

Don't pay him a $1 million per year to "mentor".

He's made a couple decent big catches on 3rd down.

He's the 6 or 7 option in this offense, realizing the type of offense, that spot ain't putting up much.

So they went with reliability
