Former Syracuse University linebacker Rich Scanlon has been named the 2005 NFL Europe Defensive Player of the Year. A member of the Berlin Thunder, Scanlon led the league with 94 tackles. He was the Thunder’s leading tackler in every game, helping Berlin to a league-best 7-3 record. Scanlon was also named to the All-NFL Europe League team, which is voted on by the NFLEL coaching staffs, members of a media panel, and fans voting online. Scanlon, allocated by the Kansas City Chiefs, is the first linebacker to win the defensive mvp award since 1999.
Scanlon was a second-team All-BIG EAST selection as a senior in 2003 after recording 147 tackles. His 94 solo tackles that season ranks seventh on SU’s single-season record list. He ranks eighth on SU’s career tackles for a loss list with 22.5 tackles for a loss of 92 yards.
