I agree that drafting specifically for need is short-sighted. The argument for taking a Cody or a Clausen was not based upon need. It was based upon seeing those players as the best talents on the board + the best positional value on the board. Need happened to overlap, creating a perfect storm of opportunity.
What the Chiefs chose to do was markedly improve team speed. There's something to be said for the strategy; it certainly paid dividends last night. The question (and the reason why people disapproved of the '10 draft) is whether Dex and Javi - classic complimentary pieces - can still compliment the team over the next few seasons.
That said, IF the D-Line continues to play like they did last night and IF Derrick Johnson can continue to be the disruptive force that he was last night (and, obv, re-signed) then Dex and Javi look a lot less like luxury picks.
