Because of the nature/speed of their swings, I think most tour players are typically a few degrees open and I have heard as much as 7 degrees.

Vijay had a 9 wood bent 7 degrees open and de-lofted to a 7 wood.

:spock:

How would you think to tell the equipment guys to do that.

Do the equipment guys even respond with words to that or just return a blank stare like they don't understand the language he is speaking?

Vijay is where I am pretty sure I had heard about using the 7 degree open driver.

7 degree open driver? That would be awesome. I wouldn't have to swing like a girl anymore and duck hook it into the ground.

-7 is pretty extreme. What were you doing with previous drivers back when you played more often? I seem to recall you saying you used to play in college or had at least had a swing up there of that caliber at some point.

LOL I know I was just joking. I still have my straight faced Ping driver. I don't even know what it's called. Whatever the big black thing was around 1999. I think it's a IST. All I know is that driver helped me out a little bit. I used to have a Calloway Steelhead fairway woods that were really offset and I would duck hook it bad. I wonder how much of that was in my head though.

About the open face or your game?

I would guess that Ping is probably the TISI. That was one of the first that got everyone worked up about the springboard face of larger drivers. Unless it has one of the better upgraded shafts you likely could have ordered from Ping at the time, there is a decent chance that shaft could be screwing you on the hook. That was right about the time tour quality shafts finally started doing interesting things (in the good sense).

Mr. Flopnuts 04-15-2010 12:40 PM

Just announced that Tiger is going to play in Charlotte, NC in 2 weeks. Guess that soul searching didn't take too long.

Charlotte has some hot bitches. Mr. Flopnuts is not surprised.

'Hamas' Jenkins 04-16-2010 12:25 AM

Today was frustrating as **** on the course.

Tee off on #1: Hit a huge pull hook with the driver, absolutely mangled, but 35 yards left of the fairway. Actually hit it on another tee box. Hit a 3/4 wedge from there between trees to 30 feet and two putt for par.

#2. Smooth 7 iron end up on the fringe. Chip to 4 feet. Miss the putt.

#3. Short par 4. 3 wood to the right side of the fairway. Yardage markers are off, and I hit a 9 iron. Airmails the green (long and left) and hits a fence to stay in play. I have a pitch from 20 yards...lay the sod over it to just get on the green and 3 putt for double. Awful, awful short game.

#4. Par 4. 295 yards. Hit a drive 20 yards short of the green, and lay the sod over another pitch. Pitch up to 15 feet (elevated green) and two putt for a ****ing bogey. Internal temp is about 211 degrees right now.

#5. Par 4, 360ish yards. Hit a driver in the left rough. Sand wedge left into the green. Chunk the ****ing ****. Hit another like shit that bounces to 15 feet. Two putt bogey.

#6. Par 4, 430 yards. Heel the dog piss out of a drive, but it stays in the fairway. Approach plays about 15 yards short, but I rape hook a six iron left of the green. Pitch over the green, then chip to a foot and tap in.

#7. Par 3, 200 yards. Plays about 190ish today with the tees moved up. Hit a 5 iron 20 yards left of the green and lay the sod over another pitch, then half blade another one.

Pick up my ball and walk off the course and over to the practice green to hit pitch shots.

Know that feeling far too well. I am mildly surprised that I have never managed to break a break a wedge shaft during a round with the abuse that I have given them over the years.

'Hamas' Jenkins 04-16-2010 12:45 AM

I think most of it was just due to losing the flex in my trail leg combined with a decel.

Anybody know a good place to buy used clubs? I tried craigslist but there isn't much for what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a 60 degree wedge and a 64 degree wedge. I don't put much stock in equipment, but I would like maybe some Cleveland wedges that are 5-10 years old. They will do just fine

Brand new 60*

Gonna be hard to find a decent used 64*

BWillie 04-19-2010 03:51 PM

Thanks guys. I cannot hit half shots and I hit the crap out of my 4 iron, don't carry a 3 iron or 5 wood so I'm one of those dbags w/ 10 wedges lol

Pablo 04-19-2010 03:57 PM

Spent a great deal of time hitting golf balls at bastard Canadian geese at my buddy's house. He lives on a golf course and has a nice lake and dam directly behind his house. And these cock sucking geese are everywhere. Honking. Shitting. Then honking some more. **** those birds. Nearly hit a kill shot with a 5 wood. But mostly driving and hitting my woods incredibly inconsistently. The only club I can trust anymore is my 4 iron. A ****ing 4 iron. That's what it's come to.

**** golf. I'm gonna take up goose hunting. I suspect I'll enjoy it much more.

If you get to close those fuckers will attack you, or at least they will when they have their gooseletts close by. I honest to go got wacked in the stomach with one's beak and I had to hit one on the head w/ my 7-iron and then I ran like hell. Insane birds.

BWillie 04-19-2010 04:41 PM

So do they make wedges higher than 64? I've never hit anything higher than a 64, but I think I'd want a 66 degree. But then again, I might hit my face w/ a ball.

You could take it to a clubfitter and have it bent to 66*

Not sure what it would cost, or of it would even be worth it.

You'd have to consider what that change would do to the bounce as well, which is gonna be damn important with a 60+* wedge.

There really shouldn't be a shot you can't hit with a 60 on a regular course. If you are worried about it, you can always have a club maker grind the sole of the wedge to make it more amenable to being laid open.

That said, I have a 60* wedge with 4 degrees of bounce that I used to use in the sandy soil of northern Ohio that is pretty much ****ing worthless in the clay of central Missouri.

nuttin wrong with a 42.

I palyed Hickry last week and picked up twice. Prolly bout an 84.... I had a bad hangover and I sucked. After that I sobered up and hit 150 + balls on friday....followed that up with 220 balls today...finished up by hitting 75 drivers in a row.Only used one tee. My swing has no feel really at this point but I'm gonna keep swinging till it comes around.( crushed drive after drive today) I prolly hit 75 wedges to start my session today so I don't just hack at full swings in case you wondered. Sure you didn't.

Great find.

I'm still 2 months from being able to play, and I'm going nuts.

'Hamas' Jenkins 04-30-2010 12:35 PM

Came in today.

Club, shaft, wrench, and complimentary headcover.

I even found Turtle Wax residue on the clubhead ROFL.

You can tell the guy who had the clubhead was struggling with coming out of shots because there are ball impressions on the lower heel of the club face.

kstater 04-30-2010 12:50 PM

Teed off today and my playing partner about drove the green on 1 with a tail wind. I put it in the fairway about 70 yards out. He's talking tough how he's going to win some money for the birdie or possibly eagle. I calmly one hopped a 56* wedge in for an eagle.

I know how you feel. This winter I had rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder. Not sure if I'll be able to play right-handed any more. Being a natural lefty, but able to control the ball, I made the switch many years ago. I may have to go back. Could get interesting in a couple of months.

Has anybody ever played Prairie Highlands in Olathe or the Kansas Country Club (not the Kansas City Country Club)? Was wondering if they are any good.

BWillie 04-30-2010 08:31 PM

Tiger Woods was one stroke away from shooting 80 today. Ouch. Missed the cut badly. He is only ahead of ten other dudes. This is on a day when JP Hayes shot 64, and there were a few 65's.

Went to Demo Day today at Overland Park Golf Club....to be honest w/ you. I wasn't that impressed w/ anything except the new drivers. The new drivers are something else. I don't really think they help me hit the ball further than my year 2000 model ping driver, but they sure as hell help me hit it straighter and are more forgiving. I hit something off the hosel literally, and it flew low and straight. If I do that w/ my club I hit a house or a couple walking their doggie. I was surprised that I liked the Cleveland Tour Model driver the best.

Yeah I agree. As far as clubheads go, drivers are probably the biggest change in technology over the past 10+ years. Hybrids are rather nice as well but non game improvement irons are have only modestly improved.

More modern shafts for woods/hybrids are a rather massive improvement in technology since the 90's. The giant heads are a hell of a lot easier to keep in play and total trash shots often look decent. IMO iron shafts haven't done much outside of rifle style but the old school dynamic gold is still going strong.

The Cleveland Tour drivers likely have a slightly open face.

Shag 05-02-2010 08:06 PM

Finally got out for the first time this year, and played okay. Shot an 86, including a handful of doubles/triples and a few 3 putts. Put up 3 birdies, which was nice. Not too bad for an opening round.

I was spraying my driver everywhere on the front, but brought it back to some semblance of control on the back. Will be interested to see how this season progresses...

Had some new grips put on. I've been threatening to do that for five years. It's done and the game is so much easier when you don't have to strangle the club to hang on. I still can't buy a new driver thgough. I just can't get over how stupid those big muther fucckers look and feel. With all the space age materials we have now why can't they build a club with a 300 cc head. And that's probably big for me still. I'll never be able to adapt to the big clubheads. Don't want to. :shake: It's a weakness.

I imagine they look really strange if you didn't change drivers at times as the technology improved. Pretty much any pro I can think of uses one of the big modern clubheads and unless the USGA changes the rules smaller drivers are as dead as persimmon drivers.

You may take a look at a used R7 425. I remember it looking a little more traditional and not quite as big but still a great club.

Miles 05-08-2010 08:57 PM

I think Cleveland makes a tour model that is 430 ccs or so and Titleist has a slightly more compact model but I haven't heard a positive thing about Titleist drivers in a while.

Hard to believe because this is the same guy who won a major tournament with one leg. I know he wasn't in contention but still. Then again neck injuries can be pretty rough.

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-09-2010 10:25 AM

Tiger needs to do a couple of things:

1) Get a divorce. He's obviously not the marrying type
2) Fire Hank Haney.

I still cannot believe that he's kept him as coach this long. Haney is not a Tour-caliber swing coach.

Tiger's swing is way too flat right now.

Funny story:

1984 U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

Craig Stadler is struggling mightily. He steps up to the tee on 16.

Whiffs.

He kicks the ball off the tee and withdraws with a neck strain.

I despise Tiger, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

He hit the ball farther when he was 19 and weighed 150 pounds than he did at 30 when he was built like a strong safety.

FWIW, he originally hurt his knee during the 1997 PGA (long before he was bulked up), and almost every golfer on tour has one or multiple problems with their posterior chain.

Interesting...

John Daly?

Last time I played in a real tournement I withdrew. It was the City Championship and unlike alot of guys I just go with who they pair me with instead of having my own group.

Well we had a few issues early in the round and by the 6th tee we were two holes behind. I spoke up and told these three guys that we needed to catch up. Every shot the rest of the day each one of these guys could not select a club before it was his turn to play. They didn't even make an effort to be ready when it was time for them to play. :shake:

The day went on and I was struggling a little. We got into the back nine and I birdie two out four holes and I'm making my move. Nothing great but with two or three birdie holes left I had a chance to get in with a 73 and be in good position for the 2nd round if nobody tore it up.

After the 2nd of the birdies I had just made I walk up on the next tee and I see the Marshall coming our way. I new why. We were still two holes behind.

He put us on the clock.

I had the honors and the hole is a short par three. #15 at Rivercutt in Springfield. It's not a full wedge so it requires some touch. Because we were on the clock I did not take enough time stairing down the shot. So moving with alacrity I made a quik decision to hit my 115 yard high 3/4 wedge shot. I executed! I watched in anticipation as my ball sailed over the green. The ball came down barley off the back of the green and bounced up hill like 20 yards.:spock: WTF? The ball crosses the cart path and comes to rest in 6 inch rough.

At this point I was playing to just make my bogey and press on.

So I have this down hill shot out of 6 inch rough to a small green that's running away from me toward the water hazard. It's an OMG shot to begin with but to make it worse the cart path has a curb and it's stairing me right in the face. I know I can't hit this shot the way I need to because of the curb. I know my ball is gonna hit it. :(

The marshall was back on the tee box talking with that group. I wanted relief. So I start waving my arms to get the marshalls attention. He's not paying attention so I yell to my playing partners to get him but they don't understand. So we're on the clock and I'm not playing because I want a ruling. This is causing me a ton of stress at this point. Fn idiots. I finaly play out of frustration and my balls hits the curb:doh!: and bounces back, gets on the cart path and rolls farther from the hole behind the bunker. It's as bad as it was before if not worse. I make 9 before it's over. I'm so steamed........

We get on the next tee and this one dumfuk says "O.k. we gotta play ready golf now!" I've already got it on the peg and I play out of turn. It's a short par 4 and I drove it up by the green. I chip on and the others knock it on and then I turn around and see Mr. Ready Golf walking a big circle around the fairway looking for a yardage marker. He's not 40 yards from the hole! It was like a bad joke.:cuss:

So we're finishing up #18 and Mr Ready Golf is up and he proceeds to walk around the hole like three times sizing up his putt. He stopped at one point to look in the cup...To check the grain? He's 40 fukn feet from the hole!:cuss:

That's a big, time consuming circle he's walking so I think fukit and I putt up and have a tap in for a bogey left. I walk up lean over the ball like I'm gonna putt but I look up at these bozos and I look'em right in the eyes. Then I hit my ball off into the pond by the green. WD! I disapeared with the one guys score card and made him track me down to get it. I should have thrown it in the pond with my ball. Fukn d!ck!:grr::cuss::mad::grr::spock::cuss:

Tiger's swing is way too flat right now.

Amazing to me is the complete psychological breakdown of Tiger Woods. I understand being long left or leaving the club open. But missing short putts is something he's never done.

There has been well crafted shell around the guy for 15 years. Seems like it's gone now.

I don't ever recall Tiger really struggling. He's played well for his whole career and never really had to face adversity with his game. Now the self inflicted adversity in his life has eaten it's way into his golf game and he is struggling. This is a big test of his fortitude. If he's withdrawing for being 2 over par and playing poorly it is not a good sign for him though.

I think Tiger's 'Wood' may have just played him out of ecilpsing The Golden Bear's Major Tournement Record.

Hank Haney has quit as Tiger's swing coach. Hamas was right on cue. Maybe he should become a golf analyst. Probably too much cussing for the golf channel. :)

Good for Tiger. That should help on the technical side.

And this is one of those "forced to resign" situations if I've ever seen one.

Tiger only hired Haney because he worked with O'Meara and Tiger was sans coach after canning Harmon.

There are a lot of guys out there who could help Tiger (first by making his swing more upright so he'll age better), but he is going to have to humble himself and be willing to accept coaching rather than just a yes-man, which is what Haney was.

Best golf story I got....

When I was in highschool this underclassman ask me a question. His question was about his chosen career path. He told me that he loved baseball but that he also loved golf. He asked me if he should focus on basball or should he focus on golf? I told him that it's up to him but if you go bb and don't make it what are your choices? If you go golf and don't make it there are a ton of jobs. ....Well.......He became a golf pro at a club and now I hear he's buying golf courses.....plural....

Shit....I feel like a daddy and I want to cry.

So, I'm dealing with some major Sergio-itis, and it's driving me nuts. I just can't get comfortable over the ball, and I'm re-gripping and shuffling my feet like crazy. It's infuriating, and I don't know how to beat it. It's also having negative effects on my game. Any suggestions?

Somebody please explain to me how you can give a damn about a sport that just hates you.

I want to like this sport. I really do, but I am tired of coming home after a round completely pissed off. The main reason I even play is just to spend time with my father but the sport keeps getting in the way because once I get frustrated its all downhill from there. I only have the time to play one round a week and sometimes not even that because things happen with my job. I refuse to play on Sundays because it is just too crowded and I don't like getting paired up with strangers. This leaves me Monday mornings and the rare evening outing when kids activities aren't keeping me from doing anything.

Basically, I have no idea how to improve because when I actually do hit a ball right, I can't figure out what I did right. Generally, when I hit a ball well, it also feels like the most uncomfortable swing of the day.

Oh, and my best round of the year is always the first round. It's crap after that.

Stopping short here because I don't know what to add right now.

So you don't practice and you don't get to play weekly even? If that's the case then why do you get mad? I mean what reason do you have to get mad? It's not like your working your butt off to have it go to pieces on you. Unless you have a chance to play more you should probably keep your expectations low and just try and have fun. If you do that you'll probably play better and have more fun.

79 The best part was that I walked it all and I feel pretty good from it at my tender age of 48. One birdie and one double bogey.

Shot 41 last Friday. Actually hit the ball really well, putted real well, just messed up some approach shots that would have had me 1 or 2 over.

Braincase 05-18-2010 07:54 PM

Played this morning with a retired surgeon at LCC. We played 1&2, then cut across and picked up the back nine @ 12 due to slow play. He gave me a couple of tips, and I hit every fairway of the tee for the first time in my life. Damn that was a beautiful way to start the day.

PhilFree:arrow:

I would like to second this ...... Enjoy the time with your father on the course. If your not playing for big money that you can't afford (old Travino joke) and not trying to qualify for an event why stress. Enjoy the good company with your father, friends, or who ever you are paired with. Enjoy the good shots and laugh at the bad shots. Just a suggestion ... the better the attitude the better the game you play, in most cases. The more stressed you get the tighter muscles get, which makes for bad swings.

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-21-2010 02:33 PM

I just got a swing speed radar in the mail.

I was really concerned the last time that I went out, because I was flushing balls with my driver and they were only going 210 yards. Of course, this was all carry on a wet course, but still, totally unacceptable for my normal standards.

I get the radar, hook it up, and use it while using some of the tips for a slower backswing that I got during a lesson last week (my first).

90 mph

I go back to my regular backswing and it's at 102. I usually averaged 100-105 on those things.

Then I remember to swing more around my body (I'd been picking the club up in order to create the illusion of a bigger backswing)

108 with a balanced finish.

Now we'll just have to see if this transfers to hitting balls.

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-22-2010 09:45 PM

Went out late today and played 9.

I literally did not mishit a single iron shot, but I could not hit my driver worth a ****.

Hit 5 greens, had 4 looks at birdie inside of 20 feet and missed every one of them.

Shot 39, but figured out on 8 I had my hands pressed too far forward on my driver, which was making me get really steep.

Sucks, cause I was just roasting my short irons. Had I hit my driver better on holes 1-6, I would have been right at par.

kstater 05-29-2010 05:47 AM

Phil, in true Mickelson choke form, has a decent chance to take over the #1 ranking, promptly goes out and misses the cut.
