5 years later and I'm not wading through all of the post, but I'll just say that the original article has it all wrong because gas would have to be over $5 for a Prius fill-up to cost $50 dollars.

I've yet to put even $40 in my Prius even after driving 500+ miles on a tank of gas. :p

Still 3.75 in Ohio, Where I live.

I'm currently in Florida, its 3.45.

We're paying $3.29 right now. Lowest it's been since around Thanksgiving, when it was about $2.99. Still too high, IMO.
