That may be my favorite KU team. At least other than 2008.

The 08 team was the best college basketball team I've ever seen. It would take one hell of a team to upset that one.

This one was also one of my next-favorites, although the Aldrich Collins season was right there with it. This team was a lot more one-on-one and dudes just beating guys. Taylor and TRob were damn unguardable consistently. All ****ing year. That was two of the most transcendent performances over the course of the year I've seen from a Jayhawk.

There wasn't anyone on the 08 team that was even close to that consistently productive facing the best shot and double and triple teams every damn night. Fact is that you couldn't throw a triple team at anyone on the 08 team like they did on TRob and you couldn't help off like they did Taylor. They faced all that and were still wildly productive. It was amazing.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Bill Self called the people at the RPI on Tuesday in pursuit of a statistic to give to the naysayers.

Self was hours away from celebrating his 11th straight Big 12 title with a 76-69 overtime win over West Virginia, but before his team took care of business, he wanted to know where the Big 12 ranked on average in terms of league strength over the 12 years Self has been at Kansas.

Somewhere along the line—maybe it was when KU was winning its fifth or sixth or seventh or eighth straight title—amazement turned to skepticism.

"I think the thing that I get a little upset with—of course, it's not worth getting upset over—but a little perturbed, a lot of people downplaying our league because a league can't be as good if one team has won this many in a row," Self said. "That's not true. Our league is terrific, and the RPI proves it."

The answer Self got was that the Big 12 on average ranked "3.1 or 3.2." This year it's No. 1.

Since I presume the folks at the RPI answered Self's call on a rotary phone, I went to the more modern and better metric at kenpom.com to run the numbers. The results were similar.

Since the start of this conference title run by Kansas, the Big 12 is just decimal points behind the Big Ten and ACC (see chart) as the best league in America.

Strength of Power Six Leagues since 2005
Avg. Conf. Rank
ACC 2.9
Big Ten 3.0
Big 12 3.1
Big East 3.1
Pac-12 4.5
SEC 4.9

Jesus.

It really is an insane streak when you look deeper at it. Other top programs don't just often have years where they don't win conference, they routinely have years where they actually miss the tournament.

But not KU. Not under Self. A down year for us has become going 13-4 in conference and being a #2 seed.

saphojunkie 03-04-2015 11:31 AM

That was as gutsy of a win as I've seen in years. Amazing.

And you know who started it all?

...
...
...

Wayne Selden.

Not with scoring, but with attitude. You could just see it in his body language and energy. He ripped Oubre a new one when he threw away the ball. He was barking at the team. That steal and dunk were a clear message to the other hawks that **** YOU WE ARE NOT LOSING THIS MOTHER****ER. He realized the team had to sack the **** up and will themselves back into the game, and he was the emotional catalyst. Then Mason went all Mason and Hunter decided he was going to Cole Aldrich vs. UNC this business.

What a beautiful win.

Lunardi has us as the 2 in the East with UVA as our 1. Maryland as the 3, UNI as the 4.

I'm already wondering about next year. Good God... Perry could be a four year guy, Selden hasn't had the NBA draft season he had hoped for, Mason/Graham/Traylor/Greene likely back... and Cliff Alexander might stick another year as well. Damn.., we could be loaded.

I really don't know what we have in Mickelson, but if it is anywhere what we saw last night, we have something good.

Agree with your comments....Although Selden goes brain dead at times himself, he is about the only one that shows emotion....He went off on Graham in the second half after a turnover....He was ****ing pissed......Love seeing that from Wayne.

So Oubre is gone?

I have a big rubbery one thinking about Mason, Greene, Selden as seniors with a junior Graham. That is a championship backcourt. Period.

It's why I'm not as doom and gloom about our team's chances in the tourney this year. March is all about guards and getting hot.

Ceej 03-05-2015 11:03 AM

Read somewhere on Facebook that Alexander could be cleared to play against OU.

Take it FWIW.
