The age of consent bright line is at least as arbitrary as the line between high school and post-secondary school of some kind. Day before age of consent, jail, day after, no jail.

Yes, but you already established that bright line for what is age of consent. Now it's: you're old enough to have sex, but if the counterparty is your teacher, then it's illegal. Oh, only public school teacher. Not, like, college teacher. Even if it's a public college? Well, sure. But why?

That system makes no sense to me. Has no basis in logic. The power dynamics are no different than many other contexts that are handled either civilly or by workplace rules. It's a random, nonsensical, exception to age of consent laws.

I wonder how often some adult with a teenager does a countdown to the 18th birthday and then celebrates by doing, you know, age of consent stuff. Is there a woman somewhere who got boinked at the age of 18 years and 10 seconds? I have to think there is.

This reminds of an old joke about an 18 year old girl who thinks she's getting a free trip to Florida on her birthday. The punchline is "No Bitch, I said when you turned 18 I was gonna tamper wit'che!"

Reading all of these various opinions indicates to me that our society has a real problem with sex. Really? You are going to throw someone in jail and/or take away their ability to work because they acted on a normal and natural instinctive urge. How much psychological damage is done by making examples out of the kids.

Our society has absolutely no problem showing someone getting their brains blown out however a nipple or a penis is going to scar someone for life. Perhaps if we didn't make everyone think sex and nudity were some sort of horrible thing, we wouldn't have as many problems.

Something doesn't make any logical sense to me: they say girls mature much faster than boys yet the male teachers who have sex with teenage girls get much harsher punishments than females.

Theory says it should be the other way around; young girls are ready for sex and young boys are walking around dumb as a tree stump trying to hump anything they can rub against.

You know why this is too, because men are viewed as crass and vile creature even when they're young and women are viewed as delicate flowers that need protecting even if they may be crass and vile themselves...

I understand your point. The world is a messy complicated place and we can't legislate heaven on earth. At some point you draw a line and hope you've drawn it in the place that does the most good and the least harm.

Why is what you advocated, better than simply using age of consent laws as the cutoff for jail time?

Teacher resigns after allegedly sending nudes to student

A high school teacher has been accused of preying on students after allegedly sending nude pictures to a boy and inviting him to play a sick game.

A young high school teacher in the United States has been charged after allegedly targeting a male student and bombarding him with topless pictures.
Kelsie Schmidt, 24, was working as a math teacher at Beulah High School in North Dakota when she allegedly sent the 17-year-old pupil nude selfies over snapchat and invited him to play a game of “naked hide and seek”.

She allegedly sent the student three or four nude images.
She was arrested on January 23 and charged with felony luring minors by computer or other means.
According to police the student received three or four naked photos from Ms Schmidt in August and September last year, with one showing the teacher from her waist up with her breasts partially covered by her hair.
An affidavit alleged the student told the police officer he could “get the math teacher in trouble for pictures she had sent him”.

When speaking to the detective, the teacher allegedly admitted to sending the X-rated pictures to the student, The Dickinson Press reported.
Ms Schmidt was in her first year of teaching and was placed on administrative leave before her recent resignation.
Her lawyer, Tom Dickson, described the events as an “unfortunate situation for everyone”.
“Certainly it’s a very serious allegation and we are treating it very seriously,” he said.
Ms Schmidt’s preliminary hearing is set for February 27.
