The extension, which is what he reportedly signed, is a 6 year deal. To this point, no reports tell us that this last year was re-done as part of a 7 year deal. That means that the deal is 6 years for up to $120m upon completion of an already agreed upon final year of his earlier deal, not 7 years for up to $120m.

This is basic math.

The last year was re-done. Originally it was around a million dollars. Now it is 645k + the signing bonus which is pro-rated on the cap 2014 to 2019.

I wish I could thank you for that last sentence, but I'm not losing any argument. You're trying to invent an argument I'm not having. I'm not bagging on Kaepernick. I'm not saying Smith is the answer for the Chiefs.

You're trying to compare Kaepernick 2012 to Smith 2013. I never made that comparison. I just pointed to points scored in the the 2013 postseasons to show that your gripe about Smith supposedly disappearing was hypocritical (It's also inaccurate, given that 13 points in a half is a 26 ppg average). And before you point to opposing defenses, take a good look at where the Packers ranked.

Seriously, you've got to get past the QB thing. You have great takes on a lot of other things. When it comes to the QB spot, though, you suck ass through a straw.

IMO, your position on the subject is correct.

Kaepernick 06-06-2014 08:32 AM

Kaepernick is such a class act, he directed his Agent to structure a team-friendly, cap-friendly contract that only pays him for top performance.

He is not greedy. He is not about money, but about winning, about his teammates. His goal is to see his team win championships, not to extract the biggest ego-feeding pay day.

'Tip of the cap to Kap' -- 49ers' QB strikes team-friendly deal

There is little question that Kaepernick could have received a lot more fully guaranteed money from the 49ers. And, obviously, a strong argument can be made that his agent should have insisted upon it.

But sources told CSNBayArea.com that Kaepernick wanted it this way. Kaepernick, who recorded one of the top Wonderlic intelligence scores of all NFL starting quarterbacks, knew the exact details and ramifications of his contract.

Kaepernick alluded to his team goals during his press conference on Wednesday when asked what he envisions himself accomplishing over the life of the seven-year contract.

“Trying to win as many Super Bowls as I can,” he said. “I think that’s your goal as a player is to try to win the Super Bowl every year that you’re playing. Granted, that’s not necessarily realistic to win it every single year. But, that’s what your goal is.”

Later, Kaepernick spoke words that can only be taken at face value when considering the structure of his contract, in which the 49ers can escape after just about any year with minimal salary-cap damage.

“I don’t think my motivation is money driven,” he said. “I think it’s driven by the success I can have on the field. Not necessarily for myself, but with my teammates. And, this just gives me all the more reason to go out and try to prove that I can live up to the expectations. I can try to help this organization win as many Super Bowls as possible.”

He did more than just say those words. He signed a contract that proved it.

"My motivation is the success I can have on the field with my teammates".

Yes, this kid is a pure class act. I have no clue why people think he is a douchebag. Tattoos? Because he is half black? Because he bucks the trend of Brady and Brees as a sharp dressed man?

No clue how anyone wouldn't realize that Kaepernick is all about winning, about his teammates, his family, his foundation, and his friends.

He was never in trouble in high school or college. Straight A student and zero off field issues. No drug issues or female issues. Even with the "gotcha" articles and incidents lately -- he always comes out of it squeaky clean and vindicated.

But all y'all will learn in time. It isn't necessary I convince you.

Well then, there you have it. You can shut your ass up now. :p

Wonder how much Kaep makes in endorsements. Maybe this played a role in how "generous" he was being during contract negotiations.

... but who cares? He got his "fluff" deal... and thank the Holy Jeebus that SF can cut him loose year to year if he continues to be an underwhelming passer in the critical moments.

I do hope he makes significant progression as a passer though... just not sure he will... but that stacked team is giving him every opportunity.

So... im confused... First I heard kaepernick was getting 61 million guaranteed. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11...re-110-million

Now all of a sudden im hearing its only 13 million in guaranteed money and that cam newton doesn't want kaepernicks contract because it sucks? http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200...klike-contract

Whats the scoop

Sounds like the NFL.com story is correct. Would trust that over ESPN any day. The full 61 is if he makes it through the year to year reviews. I may be wrong though.

Cam has reason to worry. He wants guaranteed money and not have to perform for it.

There was a NFL story on nfl.com as well that said he had guaranteed money of 61 million I was just too late to use that one.

**** if I know then. Interesting contract for sure. Kind of surprised he agreed to it, if my thoughts are correct.

The scoop is that the 61 million is guaranteed in chunks and never until the year that it gets activated. It basically protects Kap from injury and if the 9ers let Kap go it vanishes. For all intents and purposes Kap has 6 one year contracts. Only 13 million is really guaranteed because it is a signing bonus.

That said, the incentives can make the contract lucrative. Kap has basically said, yes I'm THAT good and I'll earn it every year or I won't get paid as much and risk being let go. In the process, he's helped the niners to be able to sign Crabtree.
