He has a bad hip, allergies and extreme anxiety from apparently watching his mom and siblings hit by a car.
All in all he will probably end up being the best dog I will ever have.
His replacement will be a pair of Shiloh Shepherds

Hey, $45 is cheap, it's worth a try. If it doesn't work for you, donate it to the a local shelter.

My lab has done both hers. Expensive as **** surgery, but a no-brainer for me. The recovery is a pain, but you'd never know my pup had two surgically repaired knees - she's good as new.

I should have updated. I've found her and she is home safe. Gone for a week, lost. I put food out all over the neighborhood, put her box outside, etc. Finally got a call from someone who thought she was under their car.

Went down there, called out to her, she popped out and ran to me and plopped.

I was in bad shape there for the week.

I'm glad you found your kitty. Meesh Meesh gets outside every once in awhile. We have to run and get him quick because he's nearsighted and if he gets far away from home he'd be lost. He likes to sneak out at the most unopportune times too... like if Mrs. B and I are on the way to something and are running late.

Poor old Rommel is giving up the ghost on me. We figured last spring that he probably had one more winter in him because he's just aged so much faster than his brother. I always said I wanted 12 healthy years from my labs and that's pretty much exactly what I got; he turned 12 in October and was still as willing as ever to run and play; just couldn't do it as long....{snip}

I'm hoping he can get some nice spring days on the screened in porch before we have to make the call but summer may be tough on him with the heat and the breathing issues.

So I'm not expecting any miracles; there was fluid in his abdomen for a reason, afterall. And that swollen sternal node means something even if nobody knows what. But he's doing pretty well. Think we may get him through to the fall afterall. Wouldn't mind seeing him hit that 13th birthday at least.

Well I'll be damned if that dog didn't go on defying expectations for almost 2 years. After Thanksgiving 2017 we took him in with a limp, bowels he couldn't control and just malaise; we were sure we were losing him then. The folks at MU Veterinary found out he was in heart failure. After a battery of tests, meds (old boy even got put in an experimental treatment with Viagra) and getting on a first name basis with the techs, we kept powering forward.

Made it to not only his 13th birthday, but his 14th as well. And he was as spry as you can expect from an old dog the whole time; really a remarkable recovery for him. Sadly, you can only push back the hands for so long and despite making it about 6 months longer than his optimistic projections back then, his heart finally couldn't do it anymore. On Saturday he let us know he just didn't have it anymore. We put up the tree, he got to eat some food off the babies trays and he just spent the day in the living room with us but he moved maybe 20 feet all day. He didn't eat his dinner and he didn't look up when mom got home. I had to carry him to the car.

I took him into the emergency clinic and they told me what I pretty much already knew; he wasn't hurting and there's nothing acutely wrong with him, but he's not going to improve. He'd gone into congestive heart failure and he just couldn't get the blood to his muscles to have any energy; his valves had finally failed him and his heart had enlarged to the point of nearly useless. There's a cruel irony in the fact that the vet said it's the largest heart she'd ever seen on a dog that size. He wasn't in any pain, but that would come soon enough.

He'd fought the good fight; got my babies through their first 10 months (and let his favorite person, my 4 yr old daughter, transition into big sister mode. She was his best friend so that transition was huge; has helped her handling it so much - I'm unbelievably thankful to him for the last year he gave us). We said our goodbyes on Saturday night. I haven't had the heart to go sifting through pictures and what not so the best I can do is a re-post.

I can't say enough about that dog. My buddy watched the kids that evening and my wife and I went for a few drinks. We have more stories about that knucklehead than our other 2 (and probably the next 3) combined. One of these days I'll sit down and write them all down; will make an interesting little shutterfly book for our oldest if nothing else. I have 3 labs and yet he's always been everyone's favorite; had the staff at MU wrapped around his paw. He loved the trip because he'd just get to hang out in the technicians office all day and see anybody coming and going. 3 different services there knew him by name. My father in law teared up when he heard. Smarter than he let on, sturdy as all hell and sweet to the end; he gave his last to (barely) walk into the office under his own power and gave tail wags and kisses to the vets that helped him pass.

I'll miss the hell out of that dog but from beginning to end I couldn't ask for a damn thing more. Just a perfect companion and family member. It's been a blast, Rommel. Thanks for everything.

stumppy 12-03-2018 05:01 PM

Sorry he's gone. They damn sure give a hell of a lot more than they need.

DJ's left nut 12-04-2018 09:39 AM

Thanks gents.

Yeah, he and his littermate (still kickin') both had green eyes until they were about 6. As they got a little older they turned a bit of a hazel color. And their coats are just this deep dark brown. The eyes definitely stood out against their coloring. Handsome boys, for sure.

It's interesting to see the other two settle into their roles. The older guy has always been boss dog but not the protector; that was Rommel's job. He was the one that stayed by the door until we were all home or barked if he heard something outside. Now Patton's laying in Rommel's old spots just keeping an eye out to make sure things are going how they should. MacArthur has found the 'people' spot on the couch and makes sure he's always by someone. He would do that anyway if he could but Rommel always got first dibs on the best spot. Now you can count on Mac to be there. My wife doesn't have to worry about tripping over anybody when she gets out of bed in the morning but otherwise the other two are picking up the slack where they can.

Dogs are funny creatures, man.

O.city 12-04-2018 09:47 AM

Tough to hear there DJ. They really become like family.

My 10 year old chocolate lab is at my parents and has been for about a year. The little shit in my picture took a nip at our youngest when he was a year old and momma pretty much put an end to that. So they went to mom and dads for a few weeks to let things calm down. That was over a year ago. The parents being empty nesters wouldn't let us bring them home so they stayed.

My dad and my lab are pretty much inseparable at this point and he gets more attention than we could give him, plus he's outside all the time there so it works out. I do miss my buddy a lot though, but he's pretty much fully gray in the snout and an old man so we aren't rocking the boat.

And the people at MU vet are just unreal. We had my labs back left hip replaced there when he was 3 and they were just awesome.

We're dog people. Dog people have dogs...so we'll soldier on. I put a deposit down on a new boy this morning because my other two are 14 and 8; the 14 year old can't have too much longer left though he seems healthy as a horse apart from a degenerative disk (that's gonna be a fun call to have to make....ugh). I just can't leave the 8 yr old as a solo act; he'd be crushed by it. He's never known life without 2 buddies around so going it alone would blow his mind.

So we have 2nd pick of a male from a litter of rotty's born last week. Here's dad:

and here's mom:

This is a picture of a puppy from dad's last litter:

That's what sold me. That dog is only 4 weeks old in that photo and looks like a small bear. Dad's a german import; incredible lines and certifications. Mom comes from a line recommended by none other than Sauto (much obliged to him for putting me on these guys years ago); great granddaughter of a world champion. Dad weighs about 130 lbs, mom about 125 (with a brother who checked in at 150). Honestly, that's a little heavier than I'd prefer but the bone structure on those guys is just incredible.

It'll be an adjustment and I'll never have another one like Rommel, but like I said - dog people have dogs, man. Gotta keep going forward. We'll be able to pick him up about a week before my daughter's 5th birthday and she has no idea. It'll all work out in the end.

We just moved to our new house about 6 months ago so we're trying to get that finished up before we do anything else dog wise. Plus I hate to get anything else while my babies are with my parents just out of respect.

We do have a couple outdoor cats that are keeping the mice away I guess, dunno, not really a cat guy.

I'll always be a lab guy though I think. I could be talked into a German Sheppard or a Great Dane, but I'll probably stick with old faithful.

I second the emotion on MU Vet. We were raising our 8th Guide Dog puppy and she presented an auto immune disease called "strangles". When we took her there, they thought she was a goner, but diagnosed it in two days. 7 weeks of prednizone, a year total with us, 4 months at Leader Dogs for the Blind and voila......... shes a working guide with a blinded man in SD. Prednizone stunted her growth but at 52# shes the little engine that does.

I got a little short with MU cardiology a couple weeks ago. During his regular cardiology appointment and chest x-ray he had a mass show up in his chest and they wanted him to go to oncology for general anesthesia and a CT scan; possible surgery to remove it or chemo. No signs of spreading; likely a slow growing carcinoma but they weren't sure and wanted the in depth look.

I just wanted to ask them what the **** they were thinking. I get it; teaching hospital and they're going to overtreat 100 times out of 100 if you let them. But FFS, he'd have a 0% chance of surviving the surgery, a 10% chance of surviving the chemo (that shits terrible on the heart), a 100% chance of being miserable if I administered it and for what gain? Hell, he would've only been 50/50 to even make it back from the general and the CT.
So he has a mass in his chest and a heart the size of a grapefruit - the heart was going to fail well before the mass got him. There was just nothing left to do and they were trying to schedule appointments with oncology.

I felt bad about being irritable later because they're the ones that found the heart failure to begin with; they're why he had a nice year down the stretch. But at some point the answer can't just be 'treat treat treat' and when I'm trying to get some straight answers regarding the status of his heart...maybe give me that rather than have me sending him to the cancer ward. His heart finally gave out a whopping 2 weeks later and the amount of pissed I'd have been had he spent any of that time going through chemo would be pretty much off the scale. Cardiology needed to do better there because someone a little less studious about that stuff would've gotten led around and done their pet a disservice.

All that said, they're the best in the region. Just a remarkable group, provided you're willing to wait a couple hours for pretty much anything you go in there to do. They're not sudden, but they're damn good.

I remember the emotions from the times we've been down that road. Sometimes the "treat-treat-treat" and the "I just want him to be a dog for as long as he can" and the "we can fix this" paths don't all mesh. The guilt when you have a terminal "member of the family" gets hard to bear. I'm sure they understand.........

I switched primary over to MU as well and that helped. I could use my primary care vet to coordinate between the services and when they weren't around I could just have that kind of conversation with her.

But since this was just a follow-up, I handled it myself. He went downhill before I got in to confirm what I was thinking with the primary vet but it was pretty clear that there was no real decision to make.

Having most of that stuff go through the primary vet is the way to go though. They'll arrange consults as needed and basically act as your advocate when the respective specialties get a little too gung-ho.

Every time this thread is bumped I think there's going to be pics of DJ's new pup. Lol

Rotty's here!

(ask and you shall receive, Sauto...)

https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pict...pictureid=1886

He doesn't stop moving long enough to get too many good pictures at the moment. And he just left mom yesterday so he's a little whiny so I get a lot that look like this with his ears down and his pout face one...

https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pict...pictureid=1885

His dad is giant. Pictures did not do him justice - holy hell that dog is huge. The proportions make sense in photos but you don't realize that the boy can get up on his hind legs and look you in the eye.

He's nothing if not game but the 'real dog' has no earthly idea how much bigger he is that this guy. He just kinda bats him around and then stares at him like "seriously, are you gonna make a game of this or what?"

https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pict...pictureid=1888

The girls at work hit him like a guided missile barrage this morning and needless to say, he can't hang...

Little heathen chews on everything.

I haven't had a puppy for 8 years and mostly just forgot what a monumental pain in the ass they are and the fact that they should line jungle traps with those !@#$ing teeth. Man those things are sharp. The baby boy loves him so when he's around, the boy gets to him first and kinda dominates the narrative. The baby girl, OTOH, has no idea what to do with him and he just plows right into her face and pisses her right off. And I've never had a puppy since I had children so a house full of baby/kid toys adds a whole new degree of difficulty that I didn't face with the 4 prior dogs.

He's....willful. But I don't think he quite understands that no matter how big he gets (and he's gonna get big), I'm still gonna be bigger. Rotty's are notorious for trying to buffalo folks and out-stubborn them but this isn't a battle he's gonna win. He'll try to ignore me here and there and it's just not working out for him. On the plus side - he's shockingly close to housebroken already. He's had one poop and one pee in the house since he got here but otherwise everything outside. 90% outdoors is a pretty good ratio. The trick will be teaching him to let us know when he needs out but with a couple older dogs in the house, he'll just end up on sequence with them and it'll be fine.

My 2 labs though, I'm starting to feel a little sorry for them. My 'younger' one was 100 mph until about a year ago and while he's still very playful, he's 8 and the energy doesn't stay up for as long as the puppy's does so he just starts to get exasperated. He growled at him last night and it's literally the first time I've ever heard him make a noise of any sort in anger. He'd played with the puppy for over an hour and was finally just done with him. The older boy is 14 and has no time for any of this shit - he gave the puppy a pretty snap on the second night and won't hesitate to snarl at him a little.

I kinda vacillate on what I think about that. My general rule with dogs is "let them figure out it; that's what they do..." but at the same time, virtually all behavior in dogs is learned. I'm not sure how excited I am about the possibility of him being 6-8 years old in his own right some day and giving the next puppy a similar grab and biting the damn things head clean off. Not sure there's much that can be done - I'm not gonna yell at the existing dogs for trying to tell the puppy that enough's enough.

It's gonna be a long couple months. Puppies are a pain in the ass, man.

I went through the same thing with my oldest two dogs when we got our puppy 3 years ago. Brought in a 4 month old pit bull puppy who had all the energy in the world and just wanted to play with the other two dogs. Our 8 year old chihuahua dachshund mix played with him for a little while until she realized that he was bigger than her....and then she wanted nothing to do with him. Our 12 year old lab beagle mix instantly wanted zero to do with him and let him know right off the bat not to **** with her. The lab beagle mix is gone now and the dachshund chihuahua mix growls whenever the pit comes around. And it's hilarious because the pit has this look on his face....like...."seriously? Still pissed off at me?".

He's gonna be ridiculously handsome. They wanted to keep him as a breeder but they just got a new male and needed a female so they kept her instead.

I tell you what man, when I went and saw their runs, Condor (the sire) was in his kennel and he just had this massive head sticking out. She came up and called him out to say hi and it was like watching a horse climb out of a Volkswagen. He's !@#$ing enormous. Pitchers can give you his proportions well enough but they don't give you scale. I was just dumbfounded by the size of that dog.

Yours is from Zero, right? What a sweet old boy he is. And the dam for mine, one of his offspring (Beauty), was just the nicest thing you'd ever meet as well. She was my buddy immediately even as I'm down there messing with all her puppies. Condor was standoffish and definitely had an "i could kill you if I wanted to" air about him, but that's a training issue given his background in Germany as a working dog. He was plenty playful with Jodi but clearly not someone who was going to warm to someone as soon as they showed up.

Both times I've had a 'pick' to make has come down to two dogs. The first time I ended up with the other one anyway later on but before all that went down I just constantly questioned myself and worried about the one I left behind. I'm gonna do the same with the pup I didn't pick this time. That one was very sweet; much less boisterous and even a little reserved. I maybe should've gone that route but this guy was so damn handsome and I figure I can get the energy directed with time. Still hated leaving the other guy behind because he was also just a friendly little pup...

SAUTO 01-24-2019 11:53 AM

How did you like that drive in to their place?

Yeah zerro is jet's poppa. And carob is her mom. She would be beauty's mom's litter mate I'm pretty sure. They've got a heck of a set up there.

One of those little girls had taken a liking to jet and was pretty upset as we were getting ready to leave. She ran across the yard barefoot (on Christmas day) , grabbed a horse by its mane and jumped on it bare back and took off.

They're country.

Fuuuuuuuuuck.

I brought the damn van thinking "eh, it's just a little gravel..." and it would make putting a kennel in and getting him home 100 times easier. I didn't realize that it was unimproved mountain roads. I'm sitting there putting minivan wheels on pieces of brush to keep the undercarriage from scraping. It was rock-climbing in a Pacifica w/ low profile tires. I don't recommend it. To get back out I plugged my address in (I'd come from KC on Monday after the Chiefs game) and both my phone and the van's GPS sent me UP the mountain. Okay...they matched so I went. I get to top of the road and there's a homestead or something there and the road just ends. I get out and walk around and am looking and every bit of technology I have swears to me there's a road there and there just....isn't. So I backtracked through to the little town at the base of the gravel and went the circuitous route that actually, y'know, had a road.

It's funny you mention the girl. She's 9ish now and Jodi said she always picks a favorite out of every litter. Sure enough, mine was her favorite as well. They were out sledding when I came to pick him up and as we were filling out the paperwork the girls got home so she came running over with him and loved on him before we left. Evidently the guy before me couldn't bring himself to take my boy because "I don't want to take her puppy". I said "well hell, somebody's gonna so it might as well be me..."

She did not, however, blast across the pasture on a horse...

it was touch and go for sure, lol.

Our German Shedder... Just turned one. And everyday, it seems, he leaves clumps of hair the size of other dogs. Yet with that face, how can you stay mad at him?

My wife has started to vacuum our Labs. She says she doesn't stick the hose on the skin just gets it close to grab the loose hair. Never would have thought they would stand still for it, but they love it.

Our ninth puppy we raised for Leader Dogs for the Blind (Gudrun aka 'Ren) has graduated and is with her forever person in Mexico City, MX.

Our Jack Russell we had to put down last fall loved being vacuumed. In fact, if you tried to vacuum the floor, he'd come over and stand in the way until you put on the brush attachment and gave his coat a once or twice over.

I've tried with the Shepherd. He likes biting the vacuum attachments... Still working on that one.

For your consideration.

As you can see in my previous post, he's a handsome fellow. He's the most intelligent dog I've ever had, has a great personality, works 24/7 protecting his family, is well mannered, and is great with kids.
:D

HELP WANTED. For a friend
Who goes by the code name of Dodger.
Mans best friend for life, a virgin in strife
I'd like to find him some bitches to Rodger.

A boarder collie he might be of mix
no papers to certify his breed
but a playdate with your she-dog
will take care of his needs.

Dodger won't care if she's short, fat or bald
or if her pedigree is top billing
as long as her tail is up
and her back side he's drilling.

The newest addition to our family, Ollie. About a year old, looks to be a beagle mix, maybe some Lab, who knows. He's a mutt and some redneck couldn't keep him and was gonna shoot him, so now he's ours.

He's a really good dog, pretty sure he's deaf in one ear and maybe has some vision problems on that same side.
